A unique new history of contemporary photojournalism to mark the 50th anniversary of World Press Photo 'Things As They Are' tells the story of modern photojournalism, from The Family of Man and the heyday of Life magazine in 1955 to the era of the camera-phone in the present day. With 120 picture essays shown as they were first seen – on the pages of newspapers and magazines, 'Things As They Are' reveals how the events of the world, the art of photographers, and the interests of the press have converged on the printed page. It traces how photojournalism has developed over time alongside changing technology, media, fashions in photography – and a changing world.
Including landmark photo essays by photographers such as Richard Avedon, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans, Nan Goldin, W Eugene Smith, Wolfgang Tillmans, Mary Ellen Mark, Sebastião Salgado and James Nachtwey, as shown on the pages of publications including Life, Paris Match, National Geographic, Stern, i-D and the Sunday Times, each is accompanied by an expert commentary. The book includes a introductory essay by Mary Panzer, a timeline of the last 50 years illustrated by the iconic winners of the annual World Press Photo awards, and an afterword essay by Christian Caujolle that looks to the future of photojournalism.

Simon Stålenhag
ID: 15343
Видавництво: Simon & Schuster

It started on Christmas Day in 1994. Dark water suddenly rose from the land, invading our homes and lives. They say it came from the depths inside the Loop. Whatever it was the Flood changed everything. Nothing would ever be the same again.

Simon Stalenhag takes us to an extraordinary world, a world of fear and discovery, in a story told through his gut-punchingly spare narrative and lush illustrations.

Stories told in both words and haunting illustrations, Things from the Flood captures a not-too-distant reality that is both haunting and imminent: addressing the many ways developing technology and nature can create havoc and wonder in our world... and the hope we might still find in that future.

About the Author:

Simon Stålenhag (b. 1984) is the internationally acclaimed author, concept designer and artist behind Tales from the Loop and Things from the Flood. His highly imaginative images and stories depicting illusive sci-fi phenomena in mundane, hyper-realistic Scandinavian and American landscapes have made Stålenhag one of the most sought-after visual storytellers in the world. Tales from the Loop was ranked one of the "10 Best Dystopias" by The Guardian, along with such works as Franz Kafka's The Trial and Andrew Niccol's Gattaca.

A must-have book for all those passionate about contemporary fashion, street style, and luminescent, candid photography

This is Not a F*cking Street Style Book is the first monograph of cult photographer and influencer, Adam Katz Sinding (aka Le 21ème), an astute documentarian of major fashion events, top brands, tastemakers, and trendsetters since 2003. For a long time, streetwear was nothing more than the rebel kid brother of high fashion. With his candid, fashion forward-scouting photos, Katz Sinding shows how streetwear has transformed into a leading style reference pioneering trends, championing creativity, and inspiring high fashion designers the world over. Today, the flair of streetwear is as likely to be seen on the runways of Milan, New York, and London as on the streets themselves. This bold fashion book brings together Katz Sinding’s most striking streetwear images, both on the streets and backstage at more than 20 fashion shows around the globe. With his unique backstage access, Katz Sinding captures such top designers, supermodels, and stylists as Kris van Assche (Christian Dior), Lucas Ossendrijver (Lanvin) and Grace Coddington (Vogue), as well as contemporary fashion icons such as Virgil Abloh, Imaan Hammam, and Luka Sabbat. The book also features a fascinating conversational piece on the streetwear phenomenon between Adam Katz Sinding, Virgil Abloh (founder of Off-White), and MENDO.

  - The first publication of major Instagram influencer @le21eme
  - Brings together street and fashion show photography to explore the ascent of streetwear into high fashion

About the author

American-born, Copenhagen-based photographer Adam Katz Sinding, also known as Le 21ème (Pronounced luh van-tay-uh-nee-em), has produced a comprehensive archive of fashion-related events around the world. In an effort to capture the zeitgeist of the contemporary fashion industry, Adam travels the world 300+ days a year documenting events in over 25 countries. Adam Katz Sinding has worked for classic brands like Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, and Christian Dior, as well as disruptive newcomers such as Gosha Rubchinskiy, Off-White, and Vetements. His work has been published worldwide in major fashion publications such as Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Elle, V Magazine, and many more.

At the heart of MENDO is the love of pure design. Before establishing the inspirational concept store and go-to flagship bookstore for style-conscious bibliophiles in Amsterdam in 2002, founders Roy Rietstap and Joost Albronda were accomplished graphic designers with an eye for innovation and entrepreneurship. Thus, a brilliant retail concept was created in the form of the MENDO of today. The collaboration of teNeues x MENDO is a synergy on many levels — a premier international publisher of illustrated books on culture combining with trendsetting designers with a great love for beautiful, aesthetically-minded books — housed in a one-of-a-kind global bookstore. If you look closely, you will see that the simple, elegant black walls are actually made of precise stacks of books — an idea that is typical Amsterdam!

Since the early 1980s Thomas Ruff has explored the photographic medium, the way it is used and the world of contemporary digital visual culture.

This volume contains and comments a seminal selection of 200 photographic works by this important german artist: including images of domestic interiors, portraits, houses and architecture, starry skies, nocturnal urban scenes and nudes, it focuses on the blurring of the distinction between photography and painting today and predominantly on ruff’s more abstract recent works, particularly his relationship with digital imagery and its production, which he began to investigate in the 1990s.

This book, realized on the occasion of a major retrospective that takes place at Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art, features new essays by the curator Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, as well as by Daniel Birnbaum and Giorgio Verzotti.
the volume also includes a detailed chronology of the artist’s exhibitions, a bio-bibliographical appendix, a rich anthology including texts on the artist by Wim Beeren, Per Bj. Boym, Boris Von Brauchitsch, Ian Brunskill, Régis Durand, Marc Freidus, Reinhold Happel, Jacques Herzog, Julian Heynen, Michel Houellebecq, Jörg Johnen, Eva Karcher, Valeria Liebermann, Annelie Pohlen, David Rimanelli, Michael Stoeber, and Matthias Winzen, as well as conversations and interviews by Daniel Birnbaum, Max Dax, Stephan Dillemuth, Isabelle Graw and Friederike Wappler.

Thomas Ruff is among the most important international photographers to emerge in the last fifteen years, and one of the most enigmatic and prolific of Bernd and Hilla Becher's former students, a group that includes Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, Candida Höfer, and Axel Hutte.

In 2007, Ruff completed his monumental Jpegs series in which he explores the distribution and reception of images in the digital age. Starting with images he culls primarily from the Web, Ruff enlarges them to a gigantic scale, which exaggerates the pixel patterns until they become sublime geometric displays of color. Many of Ruff's works in the series focus on idyllic, seemingly untouched landscapes, and conversely, scenes of war, and nature disturbed by human manipulation.

Taken together, these masterworks create an encyclopedic compendium of contemporary visual culture that also actively engages the history of landscape painting. A fittingly deluxe and oversized volume, Jpegs is the first monograph dedicated exclusively to the publication of Ruff's remarkable series.

Andy Goldsworthy
ID: 7169
Видавництво: Abrams

In his first major book in four years, internationally acclaimed artist Andy Goldsworthy presents a wealth of new work informed by the passage of time. Goldsworthy, who works with stone, leaves, grass, branches, snow, and other natural materials to create intensely personal artworks, uses time almost as a medium in his art: on a snow-covered Scottish hillside a huge rectangle of compacted snow becomes ever more visible as the surrounding snow melts away; clay walls dry out and crack, revealing previously invisible forms embedded within them;a sculpture of re-formed icicles is made to catch the morning sunshine. In the spectacular color photo-graphs seen here, Goldsworthy celebrates the many ways his art is about, or evokes, the passage of time. Presenting exciting works not seen in previous books, along with revealing excerpts from Goldsworthy's working diaries, this perceptive overview—which includes an extensive illustrated chronology by Terry Friedman—will become the definitive reference on Goldsworthy's art. "Movement, change, light, growth, and decay are the life-blood of nature, the energies that I try to tap through my work." —Andy Goldsworthy

The history of photography is teeming with portraits of musicians made iconic by their album covers: Thelonious Monk by W. Eugene Smith, Miles Davis by Irving Penn, Grace Jones by Jean-Paul Goude, Laurie Anderson by Robert Mapplethorpe.

The history of album cover art also includes collaborations between prominent figures, such as Mick Rock and David Bowie, Annie Leibovitz and John Lennon, Lee Friedlander and John Coltrane, Nobuyoshi Araki and Björk, Anton Corbijn and U2, and Robert Frank with the Rolling Stones ― not to mention Francis Wolff’s legendary work with Blue Note, the record label he cofounded.

Musicians and designers have also sifted through photography’s rich history for powerful photographs to match and keep company with the music enclosed within: Anders Petersen’s classic Café Lehmitz portrait of a man nestling into a woman’s bosom stands in for Tom Waits on the cover of Swordfishtrombones; Big Star and Alex Chilton push the listener into a corner with William Eggleston’s Red Ceiling on their album Radio City; Rage Against the Machine goes for the jugular on its self-titled album with the anonymous Vietnam War photo of the self-immolation of a Buddhist monk. Images like the Abbey Road crosswalk are deeply inscribed in our collective memory, yet few details are known about the photographer.

All of these ― and more ― are included in this compendium of electrifying images and the albums they grace. Includes albums featuring images by David Bailey, Guy Bourdin, Anton Corbijn, Roy DeCarava, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Nan Goldin, Luigi Ghirri, Jean-Paul Goude, Brian Griffin, William Klein, David LaChapelle, Danny Lyon, Robert Mapplethorpe, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, Ryan McGinley, Helmut Newton, Martin Parr, Anders Petersen, Pierre et Gilles, Hiro, Cindy Sherman, W. Eugene Smith, Pennie Smith, Juergen Teller, Jeff Wall, Andy Warhol, Albert Watson, William Wegman, and more.
