In the surreal, transfixing photographic universe of Thurstan Redding, everyday existence collides with colourful fantasy as 70 cosplayers become heroes for a day: Spider-Man is illuminated by the electric glow of an open fridge; three Alices wait at a bus stop in a desolate Wonderland; and a Resistance Pilot plays dead on the gravel driveway of a suburban housing estate. Insights from the cosplayers themselves are supplemented with commentary by fashion stylist and editor Katie Grand, author and musician Tom Rasmussen and fashion writer Sara McAlpine on the expressive craft and inclusive community of cosplay.

Whether it is becoming a fictional character or presenting the ‘you’ the world sees, the craft of cosplay is everywhere. A powerful expression of individuality and diversity, cosplay is a global phenomenon that allows a large number of diverse individuals to join together in one single chaotic but inclusive community. Cosplay allows anyone to become a hero for a day.

After attending a cosplay convention in 2018, photographer Thurstan Redding became captivated by cosplay as a subject matter and embarked on a three-year photographic project to portray cosplay in a way it had never been seen before. In this bold and surprising volume, he captures the transfixing world of cosplay. Brought to life through the presentation of 70 cosplayers in the most unassuming of locations, this exceptional book highlights how creativity can thrive in the most mundane realities: Spider-Man is illuminated by the open fridge in the kitchen, three Alices wait at a bus stop in a desolate Wonderland, Resistance Pilot plays dead on the gravel driveway of a suburban housing estate. A foreword by fashion powerhouse Katie Grand, an essay by writer and performer Tom Rasmussen, who discusses the social and cultural context of cosplay, and an illuminating interview with Redding by noted fashion writer Sara McAlpine complete this compelling volume. About the Author:

Thurstan Redding is a British photographer and director, born in Hong Kong and raised in France, whose work applies a cinematic lens to subcultural subject matter. Since graduating from the University of Cambridge, where he read Politics, Psychology and Sociology, he has contributed to Vogue, WSJ, Le Monde, Arena Homme +, i-D and Dazed. He has also shot campaigns for clients including Chanel, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Versace and Miu Miu.

You can find him on the stage or in front of a film camera, in the director’s chair or at the mixing board ― Lars Eidinger has many faces, and not just as an actor. His performances testify to a sheer, inexhaustible energy that makes every appearance a tour de force that infects and electrifies the audience in an almost magical way. An exploration of Jacques Henri Lartigue’s early photography and a vivid portrayal of Belle Epoque France

As a little boy of seven or eight, Jacques Henri Lartigue was given his first camera, and soon was developing his own photographs. Born into a prosperous family, from childhood Lartigue acutely observed the social rituals of the upper echelons of society through his photography. The hand-held Kodak camera, first introduced in 1888, granted the young photographer flexibility to capture the fine details of eccentric family members at home, the elaborate social parade in the Bois de Boulogne, on the beach in Normandy and beyond. Classic images of motor cars and high fashion sit alongside previously unpublished photographs from the Lartigue archive. These images of family beau-monde and demi-monde life are not only evidence of a prodigious talent, but also offer an intimate, adolescent perspective of Belle-Époque Paris, the world of Proust, Debussy and the Nabis, before the outbreak of the First World War.

At a young age Lartigue mastered the medium of photography: this exploration of his extraordinary childhood is interwoven with a social and cultural portrait of the Belle Époque. Bonnard and Vuillard used the camera as a reference point for painting, Eugène Atget documented the architecture of the old Paris ahead of its developers, but Lartigue was the first to harness the immediacy of the snapshot, often capturing his subjects mid-gesture as in real life, creating a new visual language for the 20th century.

What does migration mean for those, who stay behind?

Louise Amelie's documentary photo series is an artistic exploration of the global phenomenon of migration and its many facets, which are often ignored in European migration politics. Migration has always been an integral part of human experience and will continue to be. Yet in public discourse it is presented as an aberration, while the existence of nation-state borders is hardly ever questioned. On the globe, Kyrgyzstan nestles inconspicuously next to Kazakhstan and China, but on the ground the vastness and heights of the mountains seem endless. In contrast to the natural beauty, prefabricated housing estates spring up in the capital, Bishkek. Here lives a young population that, despite all the adversities of post-Soviet reality, faces the world with great confidence. In a collection of portraying texts and photographs that foreground the individual stories, the book is an expression of solidarity and empathy, and shows that migration can mean both an opportunity as well as the painful loss of a beloved Missing Member.

About the Author:

The artistic focus of director and photographer Louise Amelie (*1991, Berlin) is on documentary and street photography. Her series, shot in the USA between 2016 and 2020, have been exhibited internationally and have been awarded the German Photo Book Prize and the Belfast Photo Festival. Since 2021, she has been exploring the theme of post-Soviet identity and migration in Central Asia, spending two and a half months in Kyrgyzstan for this project.
