For Dolce&Gabbana, Monica Bellucci embodies the dream of la dolce vita. This book tells the story of a diva and her unique style.

Monica Bellucci and Dolce&Gabbana have an unbreakable bond. Their first meeting took place during a casting session for a fashion show, when it was love at first sight. Since then, the muse has continued to inspire the two designers, who are now paying their respects to her wholly Italian sensuality, beauty, and charisma in this volume. The unique style of the contemporary diva is presented in a large-format photo book, as a celebration of the career and beauty of the model, actress, and woman.

Babeth Djian, editor of the French magazine Numéro, has curated the art direction of the volume; Jean-Baptiste Mondino has created 12 wonderful portraits of Monica specifically for this project, which will be accompanied by the advertising campaigns, editorials, and most iconic shots in which she posed for the great masters of photography. Two previously unpublished interviews with Monica Bellucci and Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana seal this indissoluble connection forever.

About the Authors:

Domenico Dolce started to collaborate with his father in the family clothing business while studying fashion design. Stefano Gabbana began to work in various fashion studios thanks to his graphic design background. Their joint debut dates to October 1985, when the designers presented their first collection, achieving great success. Since then, Dolce&Gabbana has experienced a constant and unstoppable ascendancy. Elisabeth “Babeth” Djian is the founder and editor-in-chief of Numéro magazine. Dijan was motivated to create the magazine because of her dissatisfaction with the titles available for women like her.

Renowned portrait photographer Mark Mann documents an impressive host of dancers — their eloquent bodies in posed tranquility and vibrant motion — representing years of excellence and varied disciplines of the art form.

A celebration of the strength and emotive ability of dancers, this book is a collection of images that captures the dynamism and energy of the mediums of both dance and photography. In homage to Mann’s hero Irving Penn, he installed a backdrop of old monochromatic muslin. Dancers from many genres — ballet, jazz, African, tap, Broadway theater, hip-hop, ballroom — perform and discuss their passions about the art form in this stark environment.

A vast expanse of a country, more than double the size of Germany, with a population density of just three people per square kilometers, and an incredible diversity of fauna — even in the most extreme environments.

With a booming economy and stable democracy, things are going well in Namibia. Life always shows Michael Poliza new paths: from actor to entrepreneur, from professional photographer to travel designer. After a career in the IT and Internet industries, Poliza started a three-year multimedia expedition on a ship around the world. In 2002, he settled in Cape Town, traveled the African plains and quickly became a world renowned wildlife and landscape photographer. The New York Times said of his work that “it could change the way you think about photography.” Captivated by the beauty of his work, friends of Poliza begin to ask if they can accompany him on his expeditions, and in 2011, he founded the company MICHAEL POLIZA PRIVATE TRAVEL, which tailors very special adventure trips to the most beautiful and untouched places.

Gunter Kast is a freelance journalist. He lives southwest of Munich in Herrsching am Ammersee. He has reported from approximately 90 countries around the world (and counting), with bylines in the German daily papers Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and Süddeutsche Zeitung, among others. He is especially taken with Africa. Other than the nearly uninhabited open spaces, what fascinates him most about Namibia is the fact that the wildlife in the nature preserves in the northwest is able to roam freely, unhindered by fences.

This is an expanded and updated version of Nan Goldin’s seminal book The Other Side, originally published in 1993. There will be a revised introduction by Goldin, and for the first time the voices of those whose stories are represented. The first photographs in the book are from the 1970s, when Goldin lived in Boston with a group of drag queens and documented their glamour and vulnerability. Ingrid Weir has designed interiors in Mexico, Los Angeles and Sydney for clients including The Macquarie Group, The Sydney Opera House, National Parks and Wildlife, Charter Hall, The Film School and The National Art School.

Trained at Sydney University, she holds a Bachelors in Architecture. With a background in set and costume design, she has worked extensively in film, television and theatre in Australia. As the daughter of film director Peter Weir and production and costume designer Wendy Stites, she grew up in the industry.

Ingrid studied photography at CCAC in San Francisco and The Australian Centre for Photography. She photographed the 2015 Bringing Australians Home campaign for Qantas, which also involved flying around the country and holding photography workshops in capital cities on behalf of the airline.

For over thirty years, the New York Times Magazine has presented the myriad possibilities and applications of photography.

Aperture is pleased to present the upcoming publication and exhibition The New York Times Magazine Photographs, which reflects upon and interrogates the very nature of both photography and print magazines at this pivotal moment in their history and evolution. Edited by Kathy Ryan, long-time photo editor of the magazine, and with a preface by former editorial director Gerald Marzorati, this volume presents some of the finest commissioned photographs worldwide in four sections: reportage, portraiture, style, and conceptual photography, including photo illustration. Diverse in content and sensibility, and consistent in virtuosity, the photographs are accompanied by reproduced tear sheets to allow for the examination of sequencing and the interplay between text and image, simultaneously presenting the work while illuminating its distillation to magazine form.

This process is explored further through texts offering behind-the-scenes perspective and anecdotes by the many photographers, writers, editors, and other collaborators whose voices have been a part of the magazine over the years. David Campany contributes a critical essay that provides an in-depth history of the magazines relationship to photography, contextualizing its contributions within the larger world of magazine work. Also addressed are issues of documentary photography in relation to more conceptual photography; the efficacy of story-telling; and what makes an image evidentiary, objective, subjective, truthful, or a tool for advocacy; as well as thoughts on whether these matters are currently moot, or more critical than ever.

The Day May Break, photographed in Zimbabwe and Kenya in late 2020, is the first part of a global series portraying people and animals that have been impacted by environmental degradation and destruction. The people in the photos were all affected by climate change, displaced by cyclones and years-long droughts. Photographed at five sanctuaries, the animals were rescues that can never be re-wilded. As a result, it was safe for human strangers to be close to them, photographed so close to them, within the same frame. The fog on location is the unifying visual, as we increasingly find ourselves in a kind of limbo, a once-recognizable world now fading from view. However, in spite of their loss, these people and animals are the survivors. And therein lies possibility and hope.

Nick Brandt (b.1964) is an English-born, US-based photographer whose themes always relate to the disappearing natural world. He is the co-founder of the Big Life Foundation, in Kenya, where all of these photographs were shot.

Portraits of Survival and Hope

Some of Nick Brandt’s subjects are humans, some are animals, but they all are creatures of equal and obvious personhood. The overwhelming sense in the photographer’s ongoing global series The Day May Break is that they are all figuring out how to live in a new world. Each has arrived at the shoot at Senda Verde wildlife sanctuary in Bolivia through their own cascade of tragedy. Both extreme droughts and floods have destroyed people’s homes and livelihoods. Victims of habitat destruction and wildlife trafficking, the animals are rescues that can never be released to the wild. People and animals were photographed in the same frame and indeed convey a sense of connectedness through a shared fate. Fog is the unifying visual, symbolic of the natural world rapidly fading from view; and an echo of the smoke from wildfires, intensified by climate change, devastating so much of the planet. But in spite of their loss, these people and animals are survivors, pioneers entering the new phase our world has reached. In The Day May Break they share their powerful stories.

Nick Brandt (*1964, London) studied painting and film at St. Martin’s School of Art, London. In 1992 he moved to California, where he still lives today. Since 2001, he has documented the destructive impact that humankind is having on the natural world and, as a result, on humans themselves. Chapter One of his seminal series The Day May Break featured photographs taken in Zimbabwe and Kenya in late 2020. Chapter Two, shot in Bolivia in 2022, is the first time in his 20-year career that Brandt has made work outside of Africa.
