Chris Stein
ID: 16085
Видавництво: Rizzoli

A new collection of unseen photographs of New York City's 1970s punk heyday, by one of the icons of the city's golden age of new wave, Blondie's Chris Stein.

For the duration of the 1970s - from his days as a student at the School of Visual Arts through the foundation of the era-defining band Blondie and his subsequent reign as epicenter of punk's golden age - Chris Stein kept an unrivaled photographic record of the downtown New York City scene.

Following in the footsteps of the successful book Negative, this spectacular new book presents a more personal and more visceral collection of Stein's photographs of the era. The images presented here take readers from self-portraits in his run-down East-Village apartment to candid photographs of pop-cultural icons of the time and evocative shots of New York City streetscapes in all their most longed-for romance and dereliction. An eclectic cast of cultural characters - from William Burroughs to Debbie Harry, Andy Warhol to Iggy Pop - appear here exactly as they were in the day, juxtaposed with children playing hopscotch on torn-down blocks, riding the graffiti-ridden subway, or cruising the burgeoning clubs of the Bowery.

At once a chronicle of one music icon's life among his punk and New-Wave heroes and peers, and a love letter to the city that was the backdrop and inspiration for those scenes, Point of View transports us to another place and time.

About the Author:

Chris Stein is the co-founder, songwriter, and guitarist of the iconic punk band Blondie. His photographic work has been featured in galleries and press around the world, and published in the successful book Negative: Me, Blondie, and the Advent of Punk, published by Rizzoli. Beyond his era-defining music with Blondie, he has collaborated with a host of artists over the years, from Shepard Fairey to Glenn O'Brien and Andy Warhol.

The Arctic is the ground zero of climate change, and the polar bear is on the front line. Filled with groundbreaking photography that reveals the breathtaking landscapes of the Arctic and the transformations of the environment through the changing lives of polar bears, it's a firsthand report from the top of our planet.

Polar Tales tells the story of an ice world in transformation and a planet nearing its tipping point -- the moment when Earth's climate begins to change irreversibly. This book is both a celebration of the wildlife that inhabits this most unforgiving and beautiful environment imaginable -- mountains, fjords, enormous glaciers, and the seemingly endless pack ice of the Arctic Ocean -- and a cautionary tale of global warming. Rising temperatures have put the Arctic at risk, and the habitats -- and lives -- of the animals there are increasingly threatened. Set against the dramatic landscape of ice floes and ragged mountains, readers see how polar bears, foxes, seals, walruses, and reindeer now struggle to live in this vulnerable climate. Images of a polar bear mother as she takes her newborns out for their first hunt, a seal pup only hours old, and the spectacle of the polar night are reminders of what is at risk.

The authors work like no other photographers: spending months in the field on their expeditions, they live among the polar bears, establishing an uneasy balance and unprecedented access to the world of the kings of the Arctic. Readers are rewarded with unique and stirring images that capture the harsh beauty of a world that few will experience firsthand.

About the Author:

Photographer Melissa Schaefer and producer Fredrik Granath specialize in the Arctic region, polar bears, and their role in a changing climate. They are based in Stockholm, Sweden, and Longyearbyen on Svalbard in the Arctic.

HRH Prince Michael of Greece, Princess Olga of Savoy-Aosta
ID: 17229
Видавництво: Rizzoli

A revelatory tour through the private photo albums of Prince Michael of Greece — as dashing a prince as ever lived, whose remarkable life traveling between traditional royals and iconic figures of art and style redefined our vision of royalty.

A unique figure among European royalty, Prince Michael of Greece and Denmark is a member of Europe’s grandest dynasties but also a bohemian, historian, writer, and the most glamorous kind of royal rebel, who renounced his rights to the Greek throne to marry the artist Marina Karella in 1965.

A Life in Pictures is his extraordinary illustrated memoir — a visual record of a life lived in some of the most beautiful places in the world, moving seductively between old-world dynasty and twentieth-century glamour. Drawn from the Prince’s extensive library of photograph albums, the images are a mixture of private and public, intimacy and fame.

In more than 500 photographs we move cinematically from royal palaces to Mediterranean villas, and from formal engagements with Queen Elizabeth II and the Princesses of Orléans to an intellectual life in Paris and parties with Jagger and Warhol in New York. Luxuriously produced with a slipcase, gatefold pages, and marbled — this captivating book offers a glimpse into a remarkable life in which royalty has mixed with art, style, and beauty.

An established author of biographies and historical novels, he is an active contributor to Architectural Digest. Drawing on a decade’s worth of pioneering photography and journalism, Punk Perfect Awful is an irreverent love letter to music and the passion that makes it happen.

Known for shedding new light on legends of popular culture and championing revolutionary voices, BEAT magazine reflects the depth and breadth of a playlist — bringing together high with low, mainstream with the underground, and mixing genres and styles with a few surprises thrown in.

Structured around themes drawn from artists’ own insights — from the fortune of being in the right place at the right time to the hustle and passion required to make it — the book reflects the eclecticism of pop’s new generation, where indie heroes like Devonté Hynes and St Vincent sit alongside pop megastars such as Lil Nas X and Neneh Cherry, and icons such as Debbie Harry and Nick Cave rub shoulders with Mykki Blanco and Charli XCX. BEAT has always ensured that it focuses on music to feel excited about, whatever that sounds like. The magazine published both Lizzo’s and Grimes’s first photo shoots, and the last piece of press David Bowie ever did.

With a parallel narrative by Hanna Hanra on a lifelong relationship with music and the inspiration behind founding BEAT, the book supplements portraits and interviews from the magazine’s archives with unpublished images — including photography by Alasdair McLellan, Ryan McGinley, Tyrone Lebon, Rosie Marks, Jack Davison, Clare Shilland, and Sue Webster — that illuminate the power of pop and the importance of meeting your heroes.

About the Author:

Hanna Hanra is a writer and brand consultant and the founding editor of Beat magazine. Her journalism appears regularly in publications including VogueNew York Magazine and The Times.

This major work presents a remarkable sequence of photo-stories from pioneering photo agency VII, documenting world history as we have experienced it since the end of the Cold War. The 11 extraordinarily talented photographers who are part of this agency work at the cutting edge of digital photojournalism, committed to recording social and cultural change as it happens around the world. Each brings an individual vision to the agency - some choosing to tackle dramatic events head-on, others pursuing more idiosyncratic, personal projects - but all share a commitment to their individual subjects and to their belief that the act of communication provides hope even in the most extreme situations.

Questions Without Answers is an ambitious book featuring a strikingly broad selection of photo stories. Photos documenting Barack Obama giving a speech on Afghanistan to American troops sit alongside a collection of portraits featuring famous cultural figures such as David Bowie and Bernardo Bertolucci. We move from an exploration of the spread and impact of AIDS in Asia to dispatches from the current economic crisis and its effect on those working in finance. The crucial work done by VII in documenting conflict - environmental, social and political, both violent and non-violent - is also represented, including stories from the war in Iraq, the crisis in Darfur and the terrible events of 9/11.

With an introduction by the eminent David Friend, the former director of photography at Life magazine, this book is important, moving and compelling record of the world we live in.

About the Authors:

VII derives its name from the number of founding photo-journalists who, in September 2001, formed this collectively owned agency. Designed from the outset to be an efficient, technologically advanced distribution hub for some of the world's finest photojournalism, VII has been responsible for creating and relaying to the world many of the images that define the turbulent opening years of the 21st century.

Now made up of 23 eminent photographers - Lynsey Addario, Jocelyn Bain Hogg, Marcus Bleasdale, Stefano De Luigi, Venetia Dearden, Jessica Dimmock, Adam Ferguson, Ashley Gilbertson, Ron Haviv, Ed Kashi, Gary Knight, Antonin Kratochvil, Joachim Ladefoged, Davide Monteleone, Christopher Morris, Seamus Murphy, Maciek Nabrdalik, Franco Pagetti, Stephanie Sinclair, John Stanmeyer, Anastasia Taylor-Lind, Tomas van Houtryve and Donald Weber - VII remains committed to recording, not just the battlefield, but social and cultural change worldwide.

What unites VII's work is a sense that, in the act of communication at the very least, all is not lost; reparation is always possible; despair is never absolute.

David Friend, former director of photography at Life magazine, is Vanity Fair's editor of creative development. A successful author and editor, he has also curated a number of important exhibitions and created the Alfred Eisenstaedt Awards for Magazine Photography.

A spectacular retrospective of the profoundly influential photographer Rankin’s extraordinary thirty-year career on the cutting edge of fashion and pop culture.

A photographer who defined the aesthetics and attitudes of the 1990s and 2000s, Rankin’s influence continues to be seen everywhere, from fashion editorials to cinematography, graphic design, and music videos for artists from Iggy Azalea to Miley Cyrus.

Edited by the photographer himself, and drawing from thirty years of work, this is the first retrospective of Rankin’s full career. From early provocative portraiture in the late 1980s, through his founding with Jefferson Hack of the fashion bibles of the 1990s and 2000s, Dazed & Confused and AnOther Magazine, to his pioneering of independent television and film through Hunger and his iconic monographs on Heidi Klum and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Rankin’s work has defined the face of popular culture for generations.

Presented in reverse chronology, with a nod to a continuing spirit of contradiction, Unfashionable moves from Rankin’s most iconic portraiture and documentary work through his nudes, his groundbreaking fashion work, and back to his earliest Polaroids. With contributions from Rankin and several of his influences, peers, subjects, and admirers, this is the definitive look at one of the most profound influences on fashion and photography working today.

Author Marvin Scott Jarrett, Contributions by Liz Phair and Wayne Coyne and Dean Kuipers and Steven Heller
ID: 14247
Видавництво: Rizzoli

This exclusive volume presents the best features and radically designed pages of the 1990’s most uncompromising document of alternative music, style, and pop culture.

Founded in 1992, Ray Gun was the only magazine wherein a die-hard culture seeker could find information on alternative music and the street-inspired style that really mattered. Punk rock had torn pop music to shreds and created a hunger for an original lifestyle beyond mainstream culture, and Ray Gun was its graphic chronicler: across its pages blasted a visual feast made up of era-defining artists such as Sonic Youth or Iggy Pop, music-inspired art, and a complete redefinition of sartorial style. The magazine’s original art director, David Carson, and his peers who followed, created an entirely new visual culture that shattered the limitations of graphic design.

Ray Gun was as radical as the lifestyle it reported on, deeply committed to visually representing an alternative culture as a new way of seeing and being in the world. With over 200 full-color photographs, Ray Gun: The Bible of Music and Style gathers the most outrageous pages from the magazine that helped to shape the ’90s. This epic anthology features exclusive photographs and articles on rock legends such as R.E.M., HenryRollins, Jane’s Addiction, The Pixies, Dinosaur Jr., U2, Marilyn Manson, Smashing Pumpkins, NineInch Nails, Mudhoney, Pearl Jam, Bjork, Morrissey, PJ Harvey, Beastie Boys, Soundgarden, Beck and an exclusive interview with David Bowie.

About the Authors:

Marvin Scott Jarrett is a celebrated creative force in the worlds of publishing, film, and television, as well as founder of Ray Gun and Nylon. Liz Phair is a legendary alt-rock goddess; Wayne Coyne is frontman of The Flaming Lips; Dean Kuipers is an arts and environmental writer; Steven Heller is an art director and co-chair of the MFA Design Department at the School of Visual Arts.

Remarkable Golf Courses encompasses the extremes of the sport – from the highest golf course in La Paz, Bolivia, to the lowest, in Death Valley, USA; from the most northerly in the Arctic Circle to the most southerly in Tierra del Fuego.

The many quirks of the golfing world are covered, such as the 18th green the other side of the River Lea which is serviced by an electric ferry, or the LA golf course that has its own funicular railway, or the floating golf hole in Idaho, where it’s not just the pin position that’s changed every day, it’s the distance from the shore!

Golf courses that feature neolithic standing stones (Scotland), Roman roads (England), and ruined medieval castles (Wales) take their place alongside the old temples of Delhi or a UNESCO World Heritage bridge that is used to link the 9th and 10th at Angkor Wat.

There are the beloved classic courses of St. Andrews, Carnoustie, Royal St. George and Westward Ho!. There are spectacular golf courses hewn out of the Nevada and Arizona desert, green oases in a cactus-strewn, rocky landscape, along with Hawaiian courses fringed by barren black lava flows. But nothing can beat the thrill in Guatemala of lining up your drive on an active volcano at the Fuego Maya course.

In comparison, there are the traditional wind-blown Scottish links, such as the Machrie Hotel on the island of Islay which has the blindest greens on any course, or the remote Isle of Barra where greens are only accessible via a kissing gate.

Fancy swapping countries mid-round? You can at the Llanmymynech club in Wales. At the fourth hole, golfers tee off in Wales and putt out on the green in England. Remarkable Golf Courses brings together some astonishing stories with some extraordinary photography.

Видавництво: Abrams

"We all perform. It's what we do for each other all the time, deliberately or unintentionally. It's a way of telling about ourselves in the hope of being recognized as what we'd like to be."
 - Richard Avedon, 1974

The preeminent stars and artists of the performing arts from the second half of the 20th century offered their greatest gifts - and, sometimes, their inner lives - to Richard Avedon. More than 200 are portrayed in Performance, many in photographs that have been rarely or never seen before. Of course, the great stars light the way: Hepburn and Chaplin, Monroe and Garland, Brando and Sinatra. But here too are the actors and comedians, pop stars and divas, musicians and dancers, artists in all mediums with public lives that were essentially performances, who stand at the pinnacle of our cultural achievement.

The celebrated author and critic John Lahr offers an elegant assessment of Avedon’s achievement. Four supremely talented artists from the performing arts - Mike Nichols, André Gregory, Mitsuko Uchida, and Twyla Tharp - contribute lively and moving memoirs about their collaborations with Avedon.

About the Authors:

John Lahr is Senior Drama Critic of The New Yorker. In 2002, he was the first drama critic ever to win a Tony Award.

Mike Nichols is an American Emmy Award, Academy Award, Grammy Award, and Tony Award-winning stage and film director, writer, and producer. André Gregory is an American director and actor. His best-known film appearance was as the title character in My Dinner with Andre

Written by Rick Owens, Photographed by Danielle Levitt
ID: 12773
Видавництво: Rizzoli

The definitive monograph on the fashion of Rick Owens -- one of the most daring and influential designers working today -- this book documents over a decade of sublime, iconic styles.

Since the establishment of his label in 1994, Rick Owens has transformed global fashion with his provocative clothing and subversive style. Distinguished by his grunge-meets-glamour aesthetic and defiant anti-fashion stance, Owens created a dark fashion empire that has accrued a devoted international following which gravitates toward the brand's sublime tailoring, somber palette, mystical layers, and gritty elegance.

Filled with photographs of Owens's most impressive looks from the last decade, this volume is conceived as a celebration of the Rick Owens aesthetic, approximating with printing effects some of the mystery and detailing associated with the brand. Iconic imagery taken from Owens's seminal lookbooks provides a unique look at the output of design from an artist who is at once comfortable with developing technologies and respectful of traditional approaches.

With principal photography by Danielle Levitt -- who achieved considerable acclaim for her social-realist images -- this book is essential for lovers of avant-garde fashion, photography, and design.

Rick Owens is an American fashion designer and winner of a Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award.
