Geza Von Habsburg
ID: 7952
Видавництво: Rizzoli

The exquisite objects created by goldsmith and jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé and his studio in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for the aristocracy and nobility of imperial Russia are considered to be some of the most refined examples of the jeweler's art of any age. Of greatest fascination are the extraordinary Easter eggs created as special commissions for the Russian imperial family and other notable patrons - works that remain unparalleled in their ingenuity of construction and sheer beauty.

Accompanying a major exhibition Faberge Revealed represents a landmark for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and for Fabergé scholarship. The essays by Géza von Habsburg and other scholars present new findings on Fabergé, his workshops, and the creation of these extraordinary objects. For the first time all items by or attributed to Fabergé in VMFA's collection are documented along with the museum's significant holdings of other Russian decorative arts. Also included is a section on forgeries that bravely confronts this vexing question. Every object has been splendidly re-photographed for this book - and the detailed photography alone should provide inestimable value for future Fabergé scholarship.

Richly illustrated with some 600 photographs, the volume documents an important collection bequeathed in 1947 to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts by Lillian Thomas Pratt, of Fredericksburg, Va., the wife of General Motors executive John Lee Pratt. Her collection, assembled between 1933 and 1946, comprised several hundred creations by the Faberge workshops and by other Russian imperial jewelers. These exquisite, marvelously crafted objects, range from the majestic jeweled imperial eggs to delicate jeweled flowers in vases to diamond-encrusted icons and tiaras, to animal figures nimbly carved from precious stone.

FAILE
ID: 9262
Видавництво: Gestalten
The latest book from the vanguard American urban artists.

This book presents FAILE's most complex and ambitious project to date - a large-scale, temporary installation of a temple created for Portugal Arte 10. The vanguard American urban artists masterfully translate familiar elements and themes from the contemporary prints, graphic design, and paintings for which they are best known into decorative frescoes and sculptures for a structure inspired by the ruins of a Baroque chapel.

The duo of American artists known as FAILE have established themselves along with Banksy and Shepard Fairey as the leading figures in urban art. They are best known for their prints, graphic design, and paintings, which have been exhibited in museums and have been sold successfully by renowned galleries such as Gagosian and Lazarides. Their monograph FAILE: Prints + Originals 1999-2009, which we released in the fall of 2010, sold out immediately after it was published.

Now, FAILE Temple presents the New York-based artists’ most complex and ambitious project to date. For the Portugal Arte 10 festival, they created a large-scale, temporary installation of a temple on Lisbon’s Praça de Restauradores. Although inspired by the ruins of a Baroque chapel, its decorative frescoes and sculptures feature familiar elements from Faile’s contemporary oeuvre.

The temple project gave FAILE a unique opportunity to reinterpret and delve deeper into the core themes of their art - consumerism, globalization, and the tension between classical art and the profane.

FAILE Temple not only documents the finished project in all its fascinating detail, but also features images of its construction and installation as well as pieces that inspired its design. An insightful text about FAILE’s work by the art journalist W. Ian Bourland rounds out the publication.

This new publication about the artistic collaboration Faile documents its work with the medium of wood.

Together, Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller are Faile. Although their art has its roots on the street, their work clearly demonstrates that street art no longer solely belongs there. What began on city walls and asphalt is now shown, with much success, in galleries and museums and can be found in living rooms and on everyday objects. In their numerous projects, activities, exhibitions, and images, Faile shows how much fun art can be and how much fun they have making it.

Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller have been working with wood since they founded Faile in 1999. Now, Faile: Works on Wood showcases their exploration of wood as an integral material in their practice from past to present. The book follows Gestalten s two bestsellers Faile: Prints + Originals 1999 2009 and Faile Temple.

Faile: Works on Wood presents a -compelling spectrum of projects and -craftsmanship that plays with the diversity of wood in terms of its uses and look and feel from early street art using salvaged material to more recent projects using apple boxes as well as their towering installation at the New York City Ballet.

The book introduces their Faile Puzzle Boxes, each of which contains 88 wooden blocks painted on six sides that can be moved and turned to create countless visual possibilities. It also includes their sculptural, carved Prayer Wheels, which are engineered to spin in place while people meditate to their favourite Faile images. Featuring beautiful colour reproductions and several new essays on their practice, Faile: Works on Wood takes readers on a journey of discovery through the artists work with this medium. In the process, the book shows that street art is not a momentary trend, but rather an independent art form.

Jack Vettriano
ID: 12662
Видавництво: Pavilion Books

Painter Jack Vettriano emerged from the unlikely background of the Scottish coalfields – unknown and untutored – and has seen his canvases hung in the Royal Scottish Academy. His first exhibition sold out, then the second. He sent the maximum, three paintings, to the Royal Academy summer show in Piccadilly; all three were hung. Alongside over forty Vettriano paintings are stories, poems, dialogue from plays, and other fine examples of Scottish writing.

W Gordon Smith, playwright and art critic, has woven an anthology of new and old writing round the painter’s images, complementing them, matching their moods, extending the lives of his characters beyond their frozen moments on canvas. Some of Scotland’s most accomplished writers have accepted the challenge to put their imagination into free fall and, by interpreting Vettriano’s paintings in such diverse ways, plunder some of their mysteries and perhaps go some way towards explaining their unique appeal.

Alongside 40 Vettriano paintings are stories, poems, dialogue from plays, an other fine examples of Scottish writing. Smith has woven an anthology of new and old writing round the painter’s images, complementing and extending them.

About the Author:

Jack Vettriano is entirely self-taught. A Scotsman of Italian descent, he left school at sixteen to become a mining engineer working down the Fife coalfields. For his twenty-first birthday a girlfriend gave him a set of watercolour paints and from then on, he spent much of his spare time teaching himself to paint. His first solo exhibition in Edinburgh was a sell-out and since then he has had solo exhibitions in London, Hong Kong and New York. Over the last twenty years, interest in Vettriano’s work has grown consistently. Vettriano’s best known painting, The Singing Butler, was sold at Sotheby’s for close to £750,000. He was awarded an OBE for Services to the Visual Arts. In 2013, a major twenty year Retrospective exhibition of Vettriano’s work was staged at Kelvingrove art Gallery and Musuem in Glasgow. He lives in Edinburgh.

This is a book to be cherished by everyone with an interest in society, collecting and the very best of jewelry art. The authors, both international jewelry experts, not only offer a rare opportunity to view a fabulous treasure trove of jewels, but also reveal the stories behind the jewels and their collectors.

For many centuries the collecting of precious gems and the jewelry fashioned from them was the exclusive prerogative of kings and queens, emperors, popes and maharajahs. But in the last hundred years movie goddesses, opera singers, industrialists and rock stars have joined those with the means to deck themselves in glittering bracelets, necklaces and earrings.

Most of what we know about the jewelry collections of recent times has been revealed through the auctions that have taken place after the collectors’ deaths. The famous sale of 1987 uncovered the full extent of the dazzling designs which belonged to the Duchess of Windsor. By the same token, as this book so handsomely shows, the collections of such society women as Daisy Fellowes, Mona Bismarck and Barbara Hutton can now be appreciated and described in detail. And among the royals and aristocrats are HRH the Princess Royal (Princess Mary) of Great Britain and the noble German family of Thurn und Taxis; from the world of film and entertainment stars like Merle Oberon, Joan Crawford and Ava Gardner.

Carol Woolton
ID: 6171
Видавництво: Prestel

In this lavishly illustrated book, a renowned editor at British Vogue examines the links between fashion and jewelry.

For as long as we’ve been dressing, we’ve been adorning ourselves with embellishments for ears, hands, wrists, waist and fingers. And as fashion trends evolve, so do trends in jewellery. Here, jewellery expert, Carol Woolton demonstrates how the worlds of fashion and jewellery have become increasingly integrated over the last century. From the corset-bound silhouettes of the turn of the century, with their elegant drop earrings and delicate chokers, to the free-flowing kaftans of the 1970s, adorned with chunky, earthy bangles and beads - major trends and designers are featured in double-page spreads that offer endlessly fascinating and informative texts and illustrations. Profiles of icons from Coco Chanel and Harry Winston to Princess Diana and Michelle Obama reveal the interplay of personality and history in the world of fashion. And as jewellery from Chanel, Boucheron, Van Cleef & Arpels and others was shown for the first time alongside haute couture in this year’s Paris Fashion Week, Woolton explores how brands have made the most of this trend. Gorgeous photography from the archives of Condé Nast, Sotheby’s, and many fine jewellers bring precious metal and twinkling gems to glorious life on the pages of this book.

Even before the advent of haute couture, Paris was a great centre of fashion. During the second half of the nineteenth century, when the capital was transformed by an ambitious urban plan, its residents responded in kind, wearing styles as polished and modern as the city itself in order to participate in the exciting new social scene. Featuring famed paintings by such Impressionist masters as Degas, Cassatt, Manet, Monet and Morisot, this delightful book revisits the world of Parisian fashion through the eyes of first-hand observers. Thematic chapters present a gallery-like ensemble of paintings that follow in the footsteps of stylish Parisians as they stroll in the parks and boulevards, meet friends at cafes, take in the theatre, relax at home and go on holiday. In an extended narrative-style caption to accompany each image, fashion and art historian Debra N. Mancoff offers a detailed discussion of what men and women wore and how their dress defined them. To complete the picture, illustrated interludes, providing glimpses into dressmaking, corsetry and millinery, the origins of couture and the rise of the department store, reveal how Paris became the fashion capital of the world.
