Thierry Delcourt, archiviste-paléographe et docteur ès lettres, conservateur général des bibliothèques, dirige depuis 2006 le département des Manuscrits de la Bibliothèque Nationale de France, après avoir notamment été à la tête de la médiathèque de Troyes – il en a conduit la construction de 1996 à 2006 et y a organisé plusieurs expositions : Splendeurs de la cour de Champagne au temps de Chrétien de Troyes (1998), Bestiaire du Moyen Âge (2004), Trésors enluminés de Troyes (2006)… Membre de la Société internationale arthurienne, Thierry Delcourt a publié de nombreux ouvrages et a participé à plusieurs volumes de l’édition du Roman de Tristan en prose dirigée par Philippe Ménard (Droz, t. II, 1990 et t. V, 1992 ; Champion, version du ms. français 757, t. II, 1999), ainsi qu’au volume VI de l’édition de la version française du Devisement du monde, de Marco Polo (Droz, 2009). Il est aussi l’auteur d’un Que sais-je ? consacré à la Littérature arthurienne (PUF, 2000) et il dirige la publication du catalogue de l’exposition La légende du roi Arthur (BNF / Seuil, 2009). On compte en outre parmi ses publications récentes Trésors enluminés de Troyes (CD Rom, Nouveau Monde éditions, 2005), Les Croisades, la plus grande aventure du Moyen Âge (Nouveau Monde éditions, 2007) et Sébastien Mamerot, Les Passages d’outremer, une chronique des croisades jusqu’en 1462 enluminée par Jean Colombe (Cologne, Taschen,2009).

For decades, fans have unsuccessfully importuned R. Crumb to expand his card-set, Heroes of the Blues. In his stead, mainstream comics artist and blues fan Stout has leaped into the breach. A book proved more feasible than cards, though, and here are the first results of Stout’s labors. The drawings, stylistically modeled on Crumb’s, are unimpeachable, the faces based on photographs while the backdrops refer, when possible, to the subjects legends. So, for instance, Friday 13 looms behind guitarist-singer Albert King, conjuring his hit, Born under a Bad Sign. A biographical sketch faces each portrait and includes Stout’s choices of Recommended Tracks and Interesting Covers, and more often than not a bit of Trivia is appended. Stout reprises only two of Crumb’s subjects (Skip James, Blind Willie Johnson) and features the electric bluesmen Crumb deliberately excluded, such as Howlin Wolf and T-Bone Walker, and musical-genre-straddlers like Chuck Berry and Dinah Washington. About the Author
William Stout is an award-winning artist and writer who has worked for over 45 years in various media, including comics (Tarzan and Little Annie Fanny, with Harvey Kurtzman); film (with Monty Python, Jim Henson, Steven Spielberg, Guillermo del Toro, and Disney); the record industry; magazine illustration; and public murals at museums across the country, including the San Diego Natural History Museum and the Houston Museum of Natural Science. He lives in Pasadena, California.

Tamara de Lempicka and the changing aspects of femininity and masculinity

As the "Goddess of the Automobile Age", Tamara de Lempicka (1898-1980) stood at the centre of the sophisticated Paris art world of the Twenties and Thirties. Her love for beautiful women, elegant automobiles and the modern metropolis provided not only motifs for her pictures, but also influenced her artistic style.

Simultaneously with her career as artist, Tamara de Lempicka pioneered a new image of life on the screen, evident in the new, self-confident woman and the changing aspects of femininity and masculinity. The same sense of style was reflected in a futuristic cult of speed, domestic design forms promulgated by the Bauhaus, and the dandyism of a George Brummell. Tamara de Lempicka’s best-known painting, "Self-Portrait, or Tamara in a Green Bugatti", presents the artist as a female dandy brimming with cool elegance.

Whether as an Art-Déco artist, a post-Cubist or a Neoclasissist, de Lempicka struck the taste of a cosmopolitan (and wealthy) public that found its own image reflected in her work.

The author:

Gilles Néret (1933–2005) was an art historian, journalist, writer and museum correspondent. He organized several art retrospectives in Japan and founded the SEIBU museum and the Wildenstein Gallery in Tokyo. He directed art reviews such as L'Œil and Connaissance des Arts and received the Elie Faure Prize in 1981 for his publications. His TASCHEN titles include Salvador Dalí: The Paintings, Matisse, and Erotica Universalis.

About he Author:

Frank Zöllner wrote his doctoral thesis on motifs originating from Antiquity in the history of art and architecture of the Medieval and Renaissance periods (1987). He is also the author of a post-doctoral treatise on motion and expression in the art of Leonardo da Vinci, published in 2010. He has published numerous works on Renaissance art and art theory, and on 20th-century art. Since 1996 he has been Professor of Medieval and Modern Art at the University of Leipzig. For TASCHEN he has authored the XL monographs on Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.
