The rediscovery of one of the most important painters of the Russian avant-garde, in the first comprehensive presentation.

Russian avant-garde artist Natalia Goncharova (1881–1962) left behind an extensive, diverse body of work. Starting out as a painter inspired by the folklore and art of her country, she produced colorful, strongly ornamental paintings. Her religious paintings based on icons were highly controversial. During her Moscow period, she began to work with cubism, giving the Russian avant-garde a significant push toward linking the traditional and the modern. Reading her letters and notes, one becomes aware of this non-conformist’s frequently biting, ironic tone.

In 1917 she settled in Paris permanently. There, she designed costumes and sets for Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. In exile, however, the artist fell on hard times.

This publication illuminates the details of Goncharova’s life and work, and finally acknowledges the importance of this unconventional artist’s oeuvre, which, to this day, has not yet been properly recognized in her own country

A priceless record of a unique and increasingly fragile way of life, one threatened by conflict, climate change and tourism

The lower valley of the Omo, at the borders of Ethiopia, Kenya and Sudan, remains one of the wildest places in Africa. Over the course of numerous voyages to this forgotten land, Hans Silvester became fascinated by the beauty of the Surma and Mursi tribes, who share a taste for body painting and extravagant decorations borrowed from nature.

In this region of East Africa, the rivers that run through the dry savannahs are home to abundant flowers, papyrus and wild fruit trees, and this luxuriance becomes an invitation to creativity and spectacle. Within hand’s reach, a multitude of plants inspire fanciful and ephemeral self-decoration, and the Omo tribes react spontaneously: a leaf, root, seed pod or flower is quickly transformed into an accessory.

People create caps from tufts of grass or they ornament themselves with banana leaves or a stem laden with flowers. These decorations are embellished with butterfly wings, buffalo horns, boar’s teeth, colourful feathers and the like, and are further enhanced by body painting with pigments made from powdered stone, plants, berries and river mud.

Among the ranks of today’s contemporary painters in Germany, Neo Rauch has attained a unique position: his oeuvre has achieved wide recognition around the world, and the most important museums and collectors endeavor to acquire his paintings. To celebrate Rauch’s fiftieth birthday, an extensive retrospective will be shown in Leipzig and Munich simultaneously, each one featuring works dating from 1982 to early 2010.

The accompanying monograph is also unique. In it, long-time colleagues and companions provide highly individual descriptions of their experiences with Rauch’s paintings. They include fellow artists Luc Tuymans, Jonathan Meese, and Michaël Borremans. Art critics and historians such as Rudij Bergmann and Werner Hofmann, and museum directors, such as Markus Brüderlin and many others, interpret selected works of their choice in brief essays. An erudite text by Bernhart Schwenk provides an art-historical perspective on the artist’s entire body of work, while Uwe Tellkamp’s exclusive essay and a series of photos of Neo Rauch's studio by Timm Rautert complete this comprehensive publication.

The fourth book in the Art of the Twentieth Century series, this volume explores the changes in art during the last decades of the 20th century. The events of 1968-1969 paved the way for profound social transformations and created a new feeling towards individuals behaviour and the relations between them, with a new consciousness of the body and of social and political dynamics. Artists experimented with languages that were as far as possible away from any tradition of painting, sculpture and assemblage that had reached the sixties, seeking new means of expression.

These substantial volumes on art periods vividly portray the most important achievements from the areas of European architecture, sculpture, and painting. The impressive photographs of works from all visual arts movements are at the center of these richly illustrated volumes. The books successfully provide an overview of the artistic diversity of the individual periods, and they couldn't have been written and illustrated any more clearly. The informative and interesting texts have been written by renowned authors from the fields of history, architecture and art history, providing a multifaceted view of each period. These books are a real pleasure for anyone with an interest in art.

Neoclassicism, as a return to the forms and ideals of ancient art, and Romanticism, as an intellectual attitude, are no longer seen as mutually exclusive alternatives. Looking specifically to Europe, the United States and Russia, the authors of this carefully researched book have selected the notion of subjectivism as the common denominator that links the visual arts and architecture between the periods of rococo and realism. A conscious decision was made to extend the time period under consideration to 1848 in order to be able to present painters as widely varied as Johann Heinrich Fussli, John Constable, William Turner, William Blake, Casper David Friedrich, Philipp Otto Runge and Francisco de Goya within this sumptuously illustrated book.

Illustrated with some 900 color photographs and reproductions, this volume explores the complexities of Neoclassicism and Romanticism in architecture and art through in-depth articles by eleven scholars, and reveals how these seemingly antithetical styles are in fact closely related. The book looks at Europe from the renewed interest in the art and architecture of classical antiquity in the mid-18th century (following the excavations of Herculaneum and Pompeii and the arrival of new architectural theories) through the effusions of the mid-19th century, and presents the work of such artists as Johann Heinrich Füssli, Eugène Delacroix, J.M.W. Turner, William Blake, and Francisco de Goya.

The Japanese belt accessories for men known as netsuke aroused great interest in Europe already at the end of the 19th century. Today they have become special, highly-prized collector’s items all over the world.

The main subjects are mythical creatures, gods of popular religion, and exotic animals and also depictions of Europeans, particularly Dutchmen, who fascinated the Japanese in the 18th and 19th century. The craftsmanship is of incomparable perfection, and the materials include boxwood, ivory, horn, coral, tortoise-shell and much else. Famous artists like Yoshimura Shûzan (1700–1773) and Ohara Mitsuhiro (1810–1878) created masterpieces which strongly influenced this art form.

The two volumes present more than 850 objects from the collection of Anne and Christian Trumpf, one of the most important netsuke collections worldwide, with in-depth commentary and lavish illustrations. The author, Dr. Patrizia Jirka-Schmitz, is a well-known scholar in this field. A new standard work on netsuke – an area of collecting that over the last few years has grown immensely on an international scale.
