The Italian Renaissance is among the most glamorous epochs of European art. Art historians as well as a wide public are fascinated by three centuries of exceptionally prolific artistic creation that produced works of international fame such as Michelangelo's "Frescos" in the Sistine Chapel. The cityscapes of the great centres of that time would be vastly different without their Renaissance architecture - cities like Florence, Rome, and Venice are veritable museums of an epoch whose art remains vital and influential even today. Impressive illustrations of works from every branch of the fine arts feature prominently in this book, which not only competently explains various aspects of Renaissance art, but also invites readers to observe them closely with its fabulous pictures.

This deluxe reconsideration of mid-19th-century painting casts a newly appreciative eye on Salon painting — whose masterpieces have been largely dismissed from the canon of modern art, in favor of those that were famously rejected by the artistic establishment of the time.

The Paris Salons of the mid-19th century are more famous today for the paintings that were rejected than for those that were actually shown. The rejected works form today’s canon of art history and are regarded as heralds of a modern age. This book looks to reassess the other side of the art history of the 19th century. Salon painting has often been dismissed as overly academic or staid. Art historian Norbert Wolf turns back the pages of history as he reintroduces readers to the artistry and excellence of Salon painting in Europe, Britain, Russia and the US. In an opulent new book, illustrated throughout with gorgeous reproductions of masterpieces by Cabanel, Manet, Biertstadt, the Pre-Raphaelites, and Sargent, naming a few, Wolf looks at Salon painting from a variety of perspectives, such as the rise of the bourgeoisie and Paris’s position as Europe’s cultural capital. He explores styles and themes that were especially prevalent in Salon painting: history painting; portraits from home and in society; the rise of »Orientalism«; and the nationalism of landscape. Readers will come away from this well-researched and absorbing book with a steadfast appreciation of the Salon’s disciplined and academic approach to painting, and an understanding of why these works were once so revered by the general public

What is more common than a pair of shoes? In a world where shoes have become an object of mass consumption, these accessories are now rid of any significance. Industry has accomplished its duty: producing large quantities at low prices. But there was a time when the shoe symbolised the strength of the Roman legion, the power of the medieval lords or the oppression of the Chinese woman. Its history is both vast and enthralling, as revealed by the author Marie-Josephe Bossan. Supporting her analysis with an outstanding iconography, the author gives these commonplace objects a universal quality that sheds light on the whole of civilisation and elevates them to the rank of a work of art.

In this innovative guide, master art instructor William Maughan demonstrates how to create a realistic human likeness by using the classic and highly accurate modeling technique of chiaroscuro (Italian for “light and dark”) developed by Leonardo da Vinci during the High Renaissance.

Maughan first introduces readers to the basics of this centuries-old technique, showing how to analyze form, light, and shadow; use dark pencil, white pencil, and toned paper to create a full range of values; use the elements of design to enhance a likeness; and capture a sitter’s gestures and proportions. He then demonstrates, step by step, how to draw each facial feature, develop visual awareness, and render the head in color with soft pastels.

Many of us want to learn “how to draw.” But as artist Anthony Ryder explains, it’s much more important to learn what to draw. In other words, to observe and draw what we actually see, rather than what we think we see. When it comes to drawing the human figure, this means letting go of learned ideas and expectation of what the figure should look like. It means carefully observing the interplay of form and light, shape and line, that combine to create the actual appearance of human form. In The Artist’s Complete Guide to Figure Drawing, amateur and experienced artists alike are guided toward this new way of seeing and drawing the figure with a three-step drawing method.

The book’s progressive course starts with the block-in, an exercise in seeing and establishing the figure’s shape. It then build to the contour, a refined line drawing that represents the figure’s silhouette. The last step is tonal work on the inside of the contour, when light and shadow are shaped to create the illusion of form. Separate chapters explore topics critical to the method: gesture, which expresses a sense of living energy to the figure; light, which largely determines how we see the model; and form, which conveys the figure’s volume and mass. Examples, step-by-steps, and special “tips” offer helpful hints and practical guidance throughout.

Lavishly illustrated with the author’s stunning artwork, The Artist’s Complete Guide to Figure Drawing combines solid instruction with thoughtful meditations on the art of drawing, to both instruct and inspire artists of all levels.

A Complete Resource on Rendering Clothing and Drapery

In order to effectively draw clothing and drapery, an artist must recognize the basic shapes of clothing and how the principles of physics act upon those shapes.
Beginning with the basic shapes of clothing and the anatomy of folds, and progressing to final rendering techniques of both sculpted and loose drapery on solid forms - including how motion affects wrinkles, folds, and waves, The Artist’s Guide to Drawing the Clothed Figure presents a novel and completely thorough approach to understanding the mechanics of drapery.
This comprehensive resource examines the mechanical principles behind the formation of folds: simple wave patterns, intersecting wave patterns, and tertiary effects upon these two, such as twisting and flowing forms. The book breaks down all clothing into three types: sculpted forms, loose drapery, and, most especially, tubes.
Once these mechanics are established, various techniques for rendering clothing are presented, including how factors such as the stiffness, thickness, or texture of a particular material can affect the appearance of an article of clothing. Throughout, the author examines examples from master draftspersons - old masters, cartoonists, illustrators, and fashion illustrators, including Leonardo da Vinci, Ingres, Degas, Joseph Christian, Leyendecker, Charles Dana Gibson, Raphael, and Will Eisner - to see how they interpreted this information.

ICHAEL MASSEN is an artist and graphic designer. His clients have included Scholastic, HarperCollins Publishers, Estée Lauder, Goldman Sachs, NW Ayer, and Workman Publishing. In 1993, he was awarded the National Sculpture Society Young Sculptors' Award and was recognized by the Art Students League of New York with two scholarships. He has an MFA from the New York Academy of Art and a BA from the College of Letters of Wesleyan University. He has had exhibitions around the country and in New York City.

This magnificent publication presents the highlights of the largest and finest privately owned collection of Islamic art in the world.

Nearly 500 masterpieces have been selected from over 20,000 works in the Khalili Collection. The result is a fascinating and diverse body of material, representing a collection that ranks among the best in the world.

Created for sultans, princes and merchants between the 7th and the early 20th centuries, these precious objects reveal the extensive contact between the Islamic empires and their conquered lands from Spain and Morocco, across Northern Africa and Egypt, the Middle Eastern nations of Iran, Iraq, Syria and Palestine, and stretching as far east as Mongolia, India and China.

The treasures presented here include rare Qur’ans and illustrated manuscripts, exquisite glass, ceramics and jewellery, magnificent textiles, carpets and paintings, from the dawn of Islam until recent times. Professor Khalili’s collection illustrates the great artistic and cultural achievements of Islam and provides a synoptic vision of the arts of the entire Islamic world. It was formed with an acute awareness of the criteria by which Muslims themselves have judged and still judge their art.

With texts by an international team of scholars and specialists, headed by Professor J. M. Rogers, honorary curator of the Khalili Collection, this volume is a beautiful and inspiring celebration of the masterpieces of the arts of Islam.

Professor Rogers was the inaugural holder of the Nasser D. Khalili Chair of Islamic Art and Archaeology at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies, and is currently honorary curator of the Khalili Collection. He was previously Deputy Keeper in the Department of Oriental Antiquities at the British Museum in charge of the Islamic collections. He is the author of numerous articles and books on Islamic art, architecture and history.
