Pierre Bonnard was the leader of a group of Post-Impressionist painters who called themselves the Nabis, from the Hebrew word meaning ‘prophet’. Influenced by Odilon Redon and Puvis de Chavannes, as well as by popular imagery and Japanese etchings, this post-impressionist group was, above all, a close circle of friends who shared the same cultural background and interests. Bonnard, Vuillard, Roussel and Denis were the most distinguished of the Nabis, but an increasing individualism in their art often threatened the group’s unity, and although tied together by a common philosophy, their work clearly diverged. This publication lets us compare and put into perspective the artists within this fascinating group.

The work of Catalan artist Eulàlia Valldosera links to the human body and the representation through conceptual pieces. Her installations formed by objects, cinematic devices, and projected images in the space surround the spectator and produce nearly a magical effect. The retrospective, which the Reina Sofia Museum dedicates to the artist, allows to look over and to get to know her initial works, barely shown previously, that include drawings, photography or single-channel videos. Besides, Valldosera will present the work Alma Mater, a monumental multichannel installation created especially for this show. The exhibition was followed by two publications. One of them The Navel of the World covers a wide selection of images, texts and documentation of the works produced in 1990 and 1991 by Eulalia Valldosera under the common rubric of The Navel of the World , and its structure is defined by the artist's notebooks with her memos, and completed with her conversation with Chantal Maillard.

About the Authors:

Natasha Hoare is Curator at Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art. She holds an MA in Curating from Chelsea College of Art and Design, London; and a BA in English Literature from Edinburgh University. Prior to joining Witte de With she worked as Assistant Curator for the Visual Arts Section of the Marrakech Biennale 5 (2014) and for On Geometry and Speculation, a parallel project for the Marrakech Biennale 4 (2012). She has previously worked as Studio Manager for artist Mark Wallinger and Special Projects Manager for artist Shezad Dawood. Natasha regularly contributes to Ibraaz, ExtraExtra, Elephant Magazine, The Gourmand, and Saatchi publications.

The Northern Renaissance in Europe was a period of rapid social and religious change. Works by master goldsmiths Mario Pinton, Francesco Pavan and Giampaolo Babetto and other artists together add up to the distinctive, typically Paduan look in art jewelry

The Padua School originated from the Istituto Pietro Selvatico in Padua. The distinctive features of this jewelry are the use of gold reminiscent of the goldsmith's art in antiquity and a modern and abstract formal expression within the group. Mario Pinton, who brought the goldsmith movement international recognition and acclaim in the 1950s and '60s, is credited with founding the experimental goldsmith movement in Padua. Francesco Pavan has enlarged the scope of the Padua School with his kinetic and geometric formal idiom.
The breakthrough on the international jewelry scene took place in the late 1960s with Giampaolo Babetto, under whose support the geometric and Minimalist tendency was most pronounced. Other distinguished artists in jewelry such as Graziano Visintin, Renzo Pasquale, Annamaria Zanella, Stefano Marchetti and Giovanni Corvaya continued along these lines or went their own highly individual ways by experimenting with the use of new materials including plastic. The work of these creative artists is beautifully displayed through color photographs, which serve to highlight their great talent.

The updated, eighth edition of this long-running title features more than 14,000 reviews of CDs and 400 new artist entries. Entries include very brief descriptions of the artists and a list of their recordings, with reviews and ratings by the authors. The lengths of the CD entries vary from very short (label, catalog number, issue date, and performers) to extensive, multiparagraph descriptions of the album's history, reception, and individual songs. The authors are clearly devout jazz historians, and the character of the entries is as much admiring as it is strictly factual. Their detailed descriptions of albums, songs, and even artists' tone colors and interpretations within specific songs are testament to their expertise. They also lament the loss of jazz divisions at many major record companies, leaving independent labels to carry the lion's share of the responsibility for documenting this art form.

Changes from the previous edition are worth mentioning. The artist index, missing from the seventh edition, has returned in response to reader demand, but to maintain what the authors consider a reasonable physical size for the volume, they have eliminated entries "which have seemed to stand still in recent years through the lack of any new releases by the artist in question." In some particularly long entries containing extensive lists of albums, they offer an "in brief" section, which allows for the inclusion of less-important yet still worthwhile recordings by presenting shorter descriptions.

Another important feature is the "Core Collection" selections. Within the listings for some artists, recordings considered essential for a basic jazz library are printed in bold type and described in greater detail. A separate list of these 200 titles would have been useful for those who are looking to build their own collections without having to wade through the entire book to find these seminal works.
