The immediacy and accessibility of video makes it an ideal medium for artists who want to work with sound and moving image; no sooner than video cameras were available to the public in the 1970s were artists already beginning to experiment with the possibilities of video. Though it took decades for it to be widely embraced by mainstream art, video is now firmly accepted as an important medium, thanks to the work of artists such as Matthew Barney, Bruce Nauman, Bill Viola, and Gillian Wearing.

Artists featured: Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Chris Cunningham, Matthew Barney, Fischli/Weiss, Gary Hill, Nan Hoover, Christian Marclay, Steve McQueen, Mariko Mori, Bruce Nauman, Tony Oursler, Marcel Odenbach, Nam June Paik, Pipilotti Rist, Sam Taylor-Wood, Bill Viola, Gillian Wearing.

To Every Age Its Art. When traditional craft met blossoming Modernism

Poets and intellectuals brushed shoulders in bustling coffeehouses, young avant-gardists heralded a new era in social and sexual liberalism, waltzes resounded through the Ringstrasse, the Vienna Secession preached: “To every age its art — to every art its freedom;” and tremors warned of looming political disintegration when the Austrian capital passed into a new century.

Across economics, science, art, and music, Vienna blossomed into a “laboratory of modernity,” one which nurtured some of the greatest artistic innovators—from Egon Schiele’s unflinching nude portraits to Gustav Klimt’s decadent Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, from the ornamental seams and glass floors of Otto Wagner to Ditha Moser’s calendars adorned in golden deities.

Discover the zeitgeist, the scandals, and the extraordinary protagonists in this introduction to a transformative epoch. Across painting, sculpture, architecture, and design, we explore all the movers and shakers through insightful profiles and crisp double-page reproductions. Marking the centenary of the deaths of some of its brightest talents, this collection joins Vienna in its 2018 celebration of Modernism.

Rainer Metzger studied art history, history, and German literature in Munich and Augsburg. Around 1900, the Viennese Secession and the Wiener Werkstätte turned Vienna into the birthplace of modernism. This opulent publication on Viennese modernism (1890–1918) focuses on famous ornamental works by Gustav Klimt, erotic depictions of the body by Egon Schiele, and works by other artists, architects, furniture designers, and craftspeople from the Viennese Secession and the Wiener Werkstätte. Adolf Loos, Otto Wagner, Koloman Moser, Joseph Maria Olbrich, and Josef Hoffmann count among the most prominent representatives of this period. Early works by Oskar Kokoschka, oil paintings by Richard Gerstl, and several paintings by Arnold Schönberg are also featured in this volume. The painterly ornamentation of paintings, as well as objects and designs from the Wiener Werkstätte, clearly demonstrate how the artists made reference to one another. The close cooperation among all of these artists involved a new concept of art, that of the Gesamtkunstwerk, which continued to be developed later at the Bauhaus and in the De Stijl movement.

This publication presents what a wealth and surprising variety of paintings were produced in Europe between the French Revolution and World War I. The selection of about 150 masterpieces, ranging from Classicism to Romanticism and Realism, demonstrates how German painters examined very different themes from European history and literature, how they traveled throughout Europe, and ultimately how they influenced other countries with their artistic ideas: nineteenth-century German painting was European.
Painting ranging from Karl Friedrich Schinkel and Caspar David Friedrich to Adolph Menzel and Max Liebermann is the theme of this richly illustrated publication. Informative brief essays by known experts discuss first-class works from the three largest museum associations in the cities of Berlin, Dresden, and Munich, as well as twenty other important German collections, showing the perception of Europe at that time. An appendix contains extensive commentary on each individual painting. A synopsis of German history with a view to Europe rounds off this standard work on German nineteenth-century art.

In a single, elegant, opulently illustrated volume: the bewitching landscapes of Vincent van Gogh, painted with overwhelming creative energy.

The landscapes in which Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) lived had a profound influence on him and his art. In his encounters with nature, the restless artist attained a harmony and balance that was otherwise denied him. At the same time, he discovered his own completely unique artistic vocabulary and hence a radically new type of freedom in art.

This elegant, full-color volume is the first to provide a comprehensive survey of van Gogh’s work as a landscape painter. Essays by renowned art historians and van Gogh specialists explore this important aspect of his oeuvre. The reader becomes directly aware of how the earthy tones of his early Dutch phase were gradually replaced by a lighter style of painting in Paris . In the south of France , the artist then discovered the intense, brilliant colors and vital expression that have made his paintings so fascinating to this day. He was under the spell of creation throughout all the periods of his brief life and career; employing motifs such as the sower, fruit trees in blossom, the wheat harvest, or the reaper, he described the ever-renewing cycle of nature’s forces.

The Mouse Who Changed the World. The ultimate history of a modern hero: Mickey Mouse

Celebrate 90+ years of Mickey Mouse with one of the most expansive illustrated publications on the Disney universe: behind-the-scenes shots, rare animation art, and vintage comics trace Mickey’s cartoons, his comic adventures, the world of Mickey merchandise and memorabilia, as well as the legendary Mickey Mouse Club.

On November 18, 1928, the world’s most famous Mouse made his very first public debut. Today, we celebrate 90+ years of Mickey in one of the most expansive illustrated publications on the Disney universe. Starting with the first sketches of a character who was almost named Mortimer, we trace the career of Walt Disney’s and Ub Iwerks’s most famous creation, one met with an explosion of worldwide popularity preceded only by the earlier successes of Charlie Chaplin.

With unlimited access to Disney’s vast historical collections as well as public and private collections, the authors bring Mickey’s success story to life: concept art, story sketches, background paintings, and animation drawings, as well as historical photographs, trace the origins and evolution of such timeless favorites as Steamboat WillieThe Band Concert, and Brave Little Tailor. They also follow Mickey as he builds on this legendary library of short cartoons by appearing in two historic feature-length films, Fantasia and Fun and Fancy Free.

Extensive archival research sheds new light on little-known chapters of Mickey’s career, the origins of the Mickey Mouse Club, and his use as a patriotic icon during World War II. Along the way, we encounter the work of all major Mickey artists in both film and comics, including such greats as Ub Iwerks, Win Smith, Ferdinand Horvath, Fred Moore, Floyd Gottfredson, Carl Barks, Manuel Gonzales, Paul Murry, Romano Scarpa, Giorgio Cavazzano, Byron Erickson, and César Ferioli.

Mickey Mouse has left an indelible mark on everyday culture as well as high art, becoming a favored subject for Pop artists such as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Roy Lichtenstein. As Walt Disney once said: “I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing—that it was all started by a mouse.” And an end to the success story is nowhere in sight. Today, 90+ years after his creation, Mickey remains as lovable and popular as ever. Let’s pay tribute to the little fellow, his legend, and his legacy with a monument to the one and only Mickey Mouse.

Walton Ford , Bill Buford
ID: 4718
Видавництво: Taschen

At first glance, Walton Ford’s large-scale, highly-detailed watercolors of animals may recall the prints of 19th century illustrators John James Audubon and Edward Lear, and others of the colonial era. But a closer look reveals a complex and disturbingly anthropomorphic universe, full of symbols, sly jokes, and allusions to the 'operatic' nature of traditional natural history themes. The beasts and birds populating this contemporary artist's life-size paintings are never mere objects, but dynamic actors in allegorical struggles: a wild turkey crushes a small parrot in its claw; a troupe of monkeys wreak havoc on a formal dinner table, an American buffalo is surrounded by bloodied white wolves. The book's title derives from The Pancha Tantra, an ancient Indian book of animal tales considered the precursor to Aesop’s Fables.

This large-format edition includes an in-depth exploration of Walton Ford’s oeuvre, a complete biography, and excerpts from his textual inspirations: Vietnamese folktales and the letters of Benjamin Franklin, the Autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini and Audubon’s Ornithological Biography.
