Author David Gahr, Text by Chris Murray
ID: 16057
Видавництво: Rizzoli

An unprecedented look at a very young Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, from the group’s creation and early New Jersey days to their meteoric rise and seminal Born in the USA tour, in photographs almost all not previously published.

David Gahr (1922–2008) was tapped by Columbia Records designer John Berg to shoot cover art for Bruce Springsteen’s second album, The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle. Gahr’s earliest photographs of the musician showcase a youthful Springsteen, not even aged twenty-three, in Asbury Park, New Jersey, on the eve of a career breakthrough. Gahr befriended the rising star, and over a span of approximately ten years he photographed Springsteen, both on- and offstage. Rare captures include Springsteen recording music, performing at the cramped venue Bottom Line weeks before the release of his seminal 1975 album Born to Run, and playing to legions of fans during his Born in the USA tour. Bruce Springsteen 1973–1986 is an unprecedented look back at Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band on their path to becoming rock legends.

About the Author:

David Gahr was one of music’s renowned but under-the-radar photographers. Starting in 1958when Moses Asch of Folkways Records brought his work to a larger audience, Gahr captured iconic images of some of the greatest musicians of the twentieth century, including Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Janis Joplin, Johnny Cash, and Miles Davis, to name only a few. Chris Murray is a writer and founder of Govinda Gallery, which represents some of the best rock music–related fine art photography and photographers in the world.

An insightful look at the history of Tibet and Buddhism through historical narratives and striking art from the Alain Bordier collection.

Fascinated by Buddhist art and Asian spirituality, Alain Bordier has spent more than forty years building a unique collection of religious objects from the Himalayas (Tibet, Nepal, and Bhutan). On display today at the Tibet Museum in the heart of the medieval city of Gruyères, Switzerland, some six hundred works offer visitors the rare opportunity to discover an endangered world heritage.

This volume presents a general historic and artistic framework of Tibetan art through narratives, anecdotes, and commentary from Bordier on the different subjects and the collection itself. Beyond the artistic aspect, this work demonstrates the symbolism and spirituality that emerge from each object and offers an interpretation of the themes from a Buddhist viewpoint. The highlight of the book is the presentation of an unpublished manuscript retracing the life of Milarepa, the great eleventh-century Tibetan yogi, whose analysis provides an excellent introduction to the great Buddhist principles.

About the Author:

Etienne Bock is a specialist in Himalayan art and literature. Jean-Marc Falcombello is a cultural journalist and a disciple of Lama Teunsang, one of the oldest living Tibetan masters for four decades. Magali Jenny is an ethnologis

A "cool" guide to Rome, with an emotional tour of the city's key historical sites and monuments revisited through the inspiration behind Bvlgari's jewelry.

Since 1884, the majestic beauty of the Eternal City and its rich archaeological, artistic, and cultural heritage have represented an inexhaustible source of inspiration for Bvlgari. Yesterday as today, Rome's monuments and artistic details are gracefully evoked in the brand's jewelry creations. For example, the design of the iconic B-zero1 ring was inspired by the Colosseum, the ultimate symbol of the city, and likewise the recurrent octagonal geometries watch dial refers to the coffered ceiling of the Basilica of Maxentius.

This handy, pocket-sized volume takes us on an unprecedented historical, artistic, and emotional tour of the city. In addition to an actual guide to the monuments, the narration is enriched by short stories by some of the best-known Roman authors from the world of contemporary Italian literature, inspired by the most iconic locations in the city.

The book is further enhanced by contributions from figures linked to the city by birth or by adoption, including renowned names from fashion, cinema, sport, and music.

The Bvlgari jewelry and the places in Rome that inspired it are photographed in stunning images with artistic direction by Jan Králícek.

About the Author:

Jan Králícek studied cultural anthropology and media at Charles University in Prague. He is now creative director of Vogue Czechoslovakia and fashion editor-at-large for VoguePortugal and GQ Portugal. Costantino D'Orazio is an art historian and curator. He was resident curator at MACRO (Contemporary Art Museum of Rome) from 2014-2019, and is curator of public art projects in Villa Borghese Park, Rome. He collaborates with LUISS University and Link Campus and is the author of a number of books dedicated to Rome and italian art.

The extraordinary collection of Gaston-Louis Vuitton, grandson of Louis Vuitton, the founder of one of the world’s most famous luxury brands

A collector since his childhood, Gaston-Louis Vuitton (1883–1970) accumulated thousands of objects over his lifetime. His wide interests and voracious curiosity were intimately bound up with the future of the family business and with travel. In addition to forming his own collection of trunks – his primary motivation and the one he announced publicly – Gaston-Louis’s roving eye lit upon rare antique travel articles, locks, hand tools, perfume bottles, tribal arts, walking sticks, vintage children’s toys, books, hotel labels, printed monograms and other typographical rarities. Together they form a rich personal evocation of curiosités industrielles, or curiosities of the trade, as he liked to call them.

This collection will capture the imagination of anyone inspired by bizarre and eclectic curiosities, or those with an interest in the cultural taste of someone who lived through the height of the Art Deco period – indeed, someone whose life was defined by the rigours and rewards of world travel.

The acclaimed survey of the life and works of the celebrated Italian modernist master, Carlo Scarpa, from the highly regarded architectural author, Robert McCarter

The work of Carlo Scarpa challenged, and continues to challenge, accepted notions of modern architecture. While several books have been published on his work, none has approached the breadth and depth of this classic monograph by Robert McCarter, who is celebrated for his meticulously researched, experientially based, and jargon-free accounts of key figures in modern architecture. This book is the definitive study of Scarpa’s many accomplishments, including such works at the Canova Museum, the Castelvecchio Museum, and the Brion Cemetery, among others. It features in-depth ‘walk-throughs’ of a selection of Scarpa’s key projects, embracing Scarpa’s approach to experientially based design and presents sketches and architectural plans, together with a complete list of works, realized and unrealized, including his much-loved interiors and glassware, as well as the buildings themselves.

About the Author:

Robert McCarter is a practicing architect and has been Ruth and Norman Moore Professor of Architecture at Washington University in St. Louis since 2007. He taught previously at the University of Florida, where he was Director of the School of Architecture from 1991–2001, and Columbia University, among other schools. He has written for numerous international publications, and his books include: Grafton Architects (2018); Marcel Breuer (2016); Steven Holl (2015); Alvar Aalto (2014); Carlo Scarpa (2013); Understanding Architecture, co-authored with Juhani Pallasmaa (2012); and Louis I Kahn (2005), all by Phaidon Press. He has also published The Work of MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects: Economy as Ethic (2017); The Space Within: Interior Experience as the Origin of Architecture (2016); and Aldo van Eyck (2015), among other books.

Carrie Moyer’s first major monograph expansively represents the influential abstract painter’s work and queer agitprop.

Carrie Moyer consciously centers her painting as a practice about painting, with history as a subtext. Known for her incursions into Color Field painting, Moyer also traces her influences to iconic female artists of the twentieth century, such as Georgia O’Keeffe, and surrounding questions of taste, once quipping of her paintings that “[Helen] Frankenthaler and [Fernand] Léger met in a dark corner and had Elizabeth Murray.”

Moyer’s complex work merges abstract aesthetics and legible imagery: vividly colored and textured forms are embedded with a range of historical, stylistic, and physical references to Surrealism, Modernism, 1960s and ’70s counterculture graphics, and ’70s feminist art. Moyer often works on the floor, pouring, rolling, stippling, mopping the paint, and embellishing with glitter. An exploration of acrylic’s unique properties is a driving force in her work. Beginning as an intern at HERESIES, the pioneering feminist art magazine, Moyer has also engaged in critical practices beyond the studio.

This monograph enriches a deep dive into Moyer’s painting practice, in particular her work of the past decade, with a portfolio of the artist’s agitprop from the 1990s, including Dyke Action Machine! (DAM!), one of the first lesbian public art projects.

About the Author:

Carrie Moyer is the director of Hunter College’s MFA program in Studio Art. Lauren O’Neill-Butler is a New York–based writer, editor, and educator. Katy Siegel is Eugene V. and Clare E. Thaw Endowed Chair in Modern American Art at Stony Brook University. Johanna Fateman is a writer, musician, and founding member of the rock band Le Tigre.

True to the Cartier brothers' passion for the earth and its natural beauties, the newest collection of high jewelry brings the wonders of nature and cultural splendors from all four corners of the globe into dialogue. Sublimated by the interplay of stones and drawings, the inspirations give rise to highly stylized, even abstract compositions of a new genre. A coral reef entwines the length of a flamboyant necklace, an iguana skin transforms into a geometric matrix, and a Chinese puzzle box reveals a kaleidoscopic ring. Natural treasures and the fruits of human creativity meet in the purity of original compositions, revealing the unique dimensions of a multifaceted world that showcases all the richness of the nature and the Cartier universe.

The story of the French cashmere shawls of the 19th century and their rise to the heights of fashion. This treasure-trove will not only delight textile scholars and costume historians but is sure to appeal to anyone who loves gorgeous accessories

The delicate beauty of the cashmere shawl was first brought to Europe by the East India Companies and Napoleon’s campaigns. Woven in Kashmir, its fabric was so light that, according to legend, a whole shawl could be passed through a finger-ring. By the 19th century, these shawls were highly sought-after in France; French manufacturers soon saw that there was a market for more accessibly priced versions and started to create their own.

Monique Lévi-Strauss has spent more than thirty years collecting and studying these shawls and gathering rare documents to preserve their history. This completely revised, expanded and redesigned edition of her classic book on the subject illustrates nearly 300 of these beautiful items, superbly photographed to showcase their splendid original designs, alongside a wealth of archive material and contemporary paintings that show them being worn by their elegant owners.

250 years after the painter’s birth, this luxurious exhibition catalog offers glimpses into the mystery of Friedrich’s largely posthumous popularity as well as the latest research into his training and techniques.

Largely ignored during his lifetime, Caspar David Friedrich was a meticulous painter of emotionally evocative landscapes, often featuring solitary figures or groups of people against dramatic scenery. His work has inspired many artists to the present day, and this volume explores the role that Berlin’s Nationalgalerie played in bringing Friedrich into the forefront of modern art history. It also shines a light on Friedrich's remarkable use of pairs in paintings — including his most famous pairing, Monk by the Sea and Abbey in the Oakwood — which he employed to express a range of different perspectives and the concept of change. Finally it examines the latest research into Friedrich’s technique: his early training in Copenhagen; his sketches, preparatory drawings and underdrawings; and his unconventional selection and use of pigments.

Throughout this monograph readers will find stunning reproductions of sixty paintings, including several iconic works, and fifty drawings—representing collections from around the world. Coupled with the latest research, they combine to offer a completely up-to-date appreciation of Friedrich’s extraordinary talent and his unquestionable status as a pioneer of modern art.

With contributions by Birgit Verwiebe, Johannes Grave, Hilmar Frank, Werner Busch, Anna Marie Pfäfflin, Gerd-Helge Vogel, Kristina Mösl, Ralph Gleis, Sintje Guericke.

About the Authors:

Birgit Verwiebe is curator at the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin for painting of the first half of the 19th century, and an expert on Caspar David Friedrich.

A monumental volume devoted to one of the world’s largest and most spectacular collections of Cézannes.

The Barnes Foundation’s holdings of works by the renowned Post-Impressionist Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) — sixty-one oils on canvas and eight works on paper — are among the most significant in the world. The Barnes Foundation was established in 1922 by scientist, entrepreneur, and educator Dr. Albert C. Barnes, a passionate supporter of European modernism. His virtually unrivaled collection, which can only be viewed at the Barnes Foundation, also includes exceptional paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and many others.

Beginning in 1912, Barnes acquired works by Cézanne from major Paris dealers such as Paul Durand-Ruel and soon ranked among the artist’s most prominent collectors. At the time, this expressed a pioneering taste that Barnes shared with only a small group of enthusiasts, even though Cézanne had been posthumously hailed as a father of modern art at the turn of the twentieth century. The foundation’s impressive holdings of Cézannes — never before published in a single study in their entirety — span every period of the artist’s career and include his largest rendition of The Card Players and one of the three versions of The Large Bathers, one of his signal testaments.

This lavishly illustrated landmark volume is both a work on Cézanne and his time, and an impetus for further study of an artist whose oeuvre is at once luminous, austere, challenging, and deeply confounding.

About the Author:

André Dombrowski is Frances Shapiro-Weitzenhoffer Associate Professor of 19th-Century European Art at the University of Pennsylvania. Nancy Ireson is Deputy Director for Collections and Exhibitions and Gund Family Chief Curator at the Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia. Sylvie Patry is Chief Curator and Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs and Collections at the Musée d’Orsay.

Featuring one hundred works from throughout Chagall’s career, this dazzling exhibition catalog focuses on the artist’s engagement with life’s most primal and universal themes.

Steeped in tradition yet alive with imagination, Chagall’s enormous body of work reflects a profound connection to cultural roots and to the boundless possibilities of creative expression. This monograph brings fresh eyes to the most relevant aspects of Chagall’s oeuvre. It traces how, over eight decades, Chagall responded to his contemporaries’ experimentations with cubism, fauvism, and surrealism by creating his own visual language.

It offers a lively examination of overarching themes ― love and romance; Jewish tradition and history; spirituality and the daily life, based on memory and nostalgia ― and the ways they are reflected through repetition and variation over the years. And it reveals how Chagall’s flexible use of symbols contributes to build a fantastic cosmos grounded on the “logic of the illogical”.

Readers will come to understand how Chagall was essentially a storyteller with an enormous gift for color and line, and a narrative artist who understood the power of symbolism in his own terms.
