A comprehensive reference covering an extensive range of painting and drawing styles

Bursting with practical techniques, engaging artist profiles and inspirational galleries, Drawing and Painting combines an authoritative approach with a contemporary aesthetic guaranteed to appeal to all artists.

The book’s up-to-date approach is a far cry from the dry instructions and dated artwork that feature in more traditional art books. In contrast to other, project-orientated titles, Drawing and Painting places the emphasis on the techniques themselves, encompassing drawing, sketching and a range of painting styles.

From pen and ink to oils and acrylics, specially commissioned photography and artwork accompanies step-by-step techniques, while profiles of contemporary artists provide insight into various working methods, materials and techniques.

Acknowledging the growing interest in digital tools as a medium, information is provided throughout the book on how effects can be created using Smart Pens, tablets and apps.

Analyses the visual approaches and techniques of 100 great artists, and shows readers how to weave some of this magic into their own drawings

Drawing Masterclass explores the act of vision of the world’s great artists, describing how the images were created to allow you to weave some of this magic into your own drawings. The book is organized into seven chapters covering important genres: nudes, figures, landscapes, still life and studies, heads, fantasy and abstraction.

Each chapter selects a cross section of artists and examines their practice in detail, using key drawings. Each artist is described through one of 100 selected masterpieces, plus a biographical profile and a practical look at the way the drawing was made: the materials and technique, as well as an examination of the ideas and inspiration behind its making and how the artist’s life might reflect their concerns. Light and shade, rhythm, form, space, contour and composition are all covered in detail.

The book covers a broad historical and geographic sweep, and includes many of the most celebrated male and female artists.

This book showcases a lesser-known aspect of Maurice Sendak’s oeuvre–his set designs for opera and ballets.

Maurice Sendak is well-known for his acclaimed children’s books, but he was also an avid opera lover and designed a number of sets for opera and ballet productions, among them Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Janáˇcek's The Cunning Little Vixen, Prokofiev’s The Love for Three Oranges, Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker, and an opera by Oliver Knussen based on Where the Wild Things Are. This book brings together over one hundred and twentyfive pieces from among the more than nine hundred in the Morgan Library & Museum’s collection, including preliminary sketches, final watercolors, and cardboard models. Essays in the book discuss the importance of music to Sendak’s work, his fascination with comic strips, movies, mechanical toys, and pop-up books, and the artworks that inspired his stage designs. The book reveals the full breadth of Sendak’s visual work for opera and ballet and highlights his keen sense of humor, his love of art history, and his ability to tell striking stories through his art.

The first book on artist, musician, and DJ Eamon Ore-Giron who mines the complex nature of Latinx identity, the history of the Americas, and the many legacies of abstraction in art.

Over the course of his career, Eamon Ore-Giron has examined the personal and historical ramifications of cultural hybridity. Raised in Tucson, Ore-Giron is inspired by his roots in the American Southwest, his visits to his father’s hometown of Huancayo, Peru, and his time spent as a practicing artist in California and Mexico. This catalogue brings together for the first time three pivotal chapters in Ore-Giron’s career: his Southwest and Peruvian-inspired figurative works from the 2000s; his paintings from the 2010s that engaged elements of both figuration and abstraction, including an ongoing series focused on Mesoamerican deities; and the sublime gold-based paintings from his recent “Infinite Regress” series.

Curator Miranda Lash, along with celebrated scholars C. Ondine Chavoya and Jace Clayton, explore Ore-Giron’s approach to de-colonizing the medium of painting, his impact within in the Los Angeles art scene, and his seminal work as a DJ who highlights the intersections between North and South American sound.

Miranda Lash is the Ellen Bruss Senior Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver. C. Ondine Chavoya is a Professor of Art History and Latina/o/x Studies at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Jace Clayton is an artist and writer based in New York City, also known for his work as DJ /rupture.

Hailed by The Times as 'a pearl of a book', this new narrative history of the Renaissance by one of the UK’s foremost art critics takes in the whole of Europe and its global context

What was the 'Renaissance'? In the nineteenth century this flowering of creativity and thought was celebrated as the birth of the modern world. Today many historians are sceptical about its very existence. Earthly Delights rekindles the Renaissance as a seismic change in European mentalities, in a panoramic history that encompasses Florence and Bruges, London and Nuremberg. Artists from northern as well as southern Europe, including Leonardo, Bosch, Bruegel and Titian, star in a captivating and beautifully illustrated narrative that sets their lives against a period of convulsive change across a continent that was finding itself as it ‘discovered’ the world.

Art critic and writer Jonathan Jones tells the story of Renaissance artists as pioneers, adventurers and ‘geniuses’, a Renaissance concept. Albrecht Dürer gazes with wonder on Aztec art in Brussels in 1520, Leonardo da Vinci tries to perfect a flying machine, Hieronymus Bosch finds inspiration in West African ivory carvings imported by the Portuguese to Antwerp. A then unknown Netherlandish painter, Pieter Bruegel, arrives in 1550s Rome just as Michelangelo is striving in the same city to raise the new St Peter’s Basilica towards heaven. From Atlantic voyages to Germanic woods, Italian palazzi to the royal castle of Prague, this was an age when people dared to experiment with the occult and dabble in utopias: to think and create new worlds.

About the Author:

Jonathan Jones is the art critic for the Guardian newspaper. He is the author of several books including The Lost Battles: Leonardo, Michelangelo and the Artistic Duel that Defined the Renaissance (2010), The Loves of the Artists: Art and Passion in the Renaissance (2013), Sensations: The Story of British Art from Hogarth to Banksy (2019) and Artemisia Gentileschi (2020). Jones was also a member of the jury for the 2009 Turner Prize and has appeared in the BBC series Private Life of a Masterpiece. He was Series Consultant for BBC2’s Civilisations and is a frequent contributor to BBC Radio 4’s Front Row.

The artist's deceptively beautiful work--colorful tapestries and garden-inspired installations created out of faux flowers, glitter, sequins, fabric, toys, beads, jewelry, and other embellishments --comes to life at The New York Botanical Garden, where she employs the beauty and symbolism of living plants to unearth the complex entanglements of race, gender and colonialism.

Accompanying a major site-specific exhibition of sculptural and horticultural installations by artist Ebony G. Patterson at The New York Botanical Garden, this volume provides deeper insights into Patterson’s multilayered practice. The artist’s work has long examined and experimented with the concept of the garden through a practice that uses beauty as an invitation to confront larger societal questions and concerns.

Joanna L. Groarke is Vice President of Exhibitions & Programming at The New York Botanical Garden. Karenna Gore is the founder and executive director of the Center for Earth Ethics at Union Theological Seminary in New York. Text by Sammy Baloji and Sandrine Colard and Gerard Houghton and Gabriela Salgado, Foreword by Gus Casely-Hayford

The first international monograph dedicated to Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga, one of the most enterprising and exciting young artists working in Africa today.

Eddy Kamuanga’s large-scale figurative paintings display a wealth of historical understanding in a sophisticated interplay of strikingly colored forms juxtaposed on gray negative space.

Kamuanga’s work taps into the rich yet complex colonial history of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, or DRC. His politically nuanced and culturally sensitive work explores the seismic shifts in economic, political, and cultural identity in the DRC since colonization. Increasingly globalized in outlook, many in the DRC today are rejecting their ancestral heritage in favor of modernity, a conflict that fuels Kamuanga’s work.

The DRC is the world’s largest exporter of coltan, a mineral critical to the production of computer chips and mobile phones. In all of Kamuanga’s works, the skin of each figure is embedded with integrated circuits, referring to the harsh conditions experienced by workers who mine coltan by hand.

Eddy Kamuanga has been recognized internationally as one of the most interesting young contemporary African talents of today, and his reputation is growing fast worldwide.

His work has been shown across Africa, notably at Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA), South Africa, and has been included in exhibitions in Europe and the United States, at institutions such as Fowler Museum at UCLA, Los Angeles; Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire; Saatchi Gallery, London; and Royal Academy of Arts, London. He is represented by October Gallery, London.

About the Author:

Sammy Baloji is an international contemporary artist. Sandrine Colard is a historian of modern and contemporary African arts. Gerard Houghton is director of special projects at October Gallery. Gabriela Salgado is a curator based in London. Gus Casely-Hayford is a museum director, cultural historian, broadcaster, and lecturer.

Christopher Lloyd
ID: 13198
Видавництво: Thames & Hudson

A beautifully produced literary art book that restores a collection of drawings and pastels to the heart of the life story of one of the great artists of the 19th century

Edgar Degas (1834 - 1917) was described as 'the most intelligent, the most demanding, the most merciless draughtsman in the world' by the poet and critic Paul Valery and today Degas is considered one of the outstanding draughtsman of the late nineteenth century. His powerful drawings and the pastles, which he himself characterized as 'orgies of colour', are some of the most compelling works in western art.

Drawing was not only the central tenet of Degas's art but also virtually a daily activity. Through an examination of the artist's drawings and pastels, which exist in great number and variety, Christopher Lloyd examines the development of Degas's style and outlines the story of his life in the contexts of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism.

Following a broadly chronological approach, Lloyd discusses the wide range of Degas's work: the images of ballet dancers (which form over half of the artist's oeuvre), jockeys, laundresses, milliners and female nudes, as well as the less well-known landscape drawings. With over 200 illustrations that capture the most fleeting of subtleties and shades, this book provides a comprehensive and engaging account of the artist as draughtsman.

Contents List:

Introduction • 1. Beginnings 1853–1855 • 2. Italy 1856–1859 • 3. History Paintings 1860–1865 • 4. Changing Directions 1865–1870 • 5. Confronting the Modern World 1870–1879 • 6. Retreat into the Studio 1880–1890 • 7. Landscape Drawings • 8. ‘The Dying of the Light’ 1890–c. 1912

About the Author:

Christopher Lloyd worked in the Department of Western Art of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford from 1968 to 1988, combining curatorial duties with teaching. During that time he was appointed by Harvard University to a Fellowship at Villa I Tatti in Florence and was Visiting Research Curator of Early Italian Painting at the Art Institute of Chicago. He was appointed Surveyor of The Queen’s Pictures in the British Royal Collection in 1988 and retired from that post in 2005. He is now engaged in writing and organizing exhibitions on a wide variety of subjects. His publications include monographs on painters, catalogues of museum collections and surveys of the Royal Collection, as well as In Search of a Masterpiece: An Art Lover’s Guide to Great Britain and IrelandEdgar Degas: Drawings and Pastels and Paul Cézanne: Drawings and Watercolours, all published by Thames & Hudson.

In dialogue with Edward Munch — discover the many ways the expressionist painter’s work has influenced modern and contemporary artists.

While Munch’s pessimistic, melancholy worldview crucially defines our understanding of his work, many important postwar and contemporary artists have drawn inspiration from several aspects of his oeuvre. This richly illustrated book explores how nine such artists — Francis Bacon, Georg Baselitz, Louise Bourgeois, Miriam Cahn, Peter Doig, Marlene Dumas, Tracey Emin, Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol — engaged with Munch’s work at different points in, or throughout, their careers. It features elaborate reproductions of sixty works by Munch juxtaposed with those inspired by him.

Readers discover how Baselitz cunningly pays tribute to his artistic hero; how Tracey Emin’s practice, like Munch’s, is autobiographical, both drawing from their personal torment to create their unnerving works; how Marlene Dumas was drawn to the expressiveness of Munch’s portraits; how Louise Bourgeois’ works are illustrative of Munch’s fixation on fear and isolation; how Francis Bacon modeled “Screaming Pope” after Munch’s most renowned painting; and how Peter Doig draws on Munch’s radical treatment of pigments and materiality.

Essays by leading scholars detail each artist’s unique preoccupation with Munch and offer a focused exploration of the ways women artists in particular were inspired by his examinations of loneliness, fear, and trauma.

A fresh look at one of America’s best-known and beloved artists at a pivotal but little-known moment in his life that profoundly shaped both his art and career.

Edward Hopper & Cape Ann tells the largely ignored but significant origin story of Edward Hopper’s years in and around Gloucester, Massachusetts — a period and place that imbued Hopper’s paintings with a clarity and purpose that had eluded his earlier work. This volume focuses on summers Hopper spent there in the 1920s, starting in 1923, when he first embraced watercolor during outdoor painting excursions on Cape Ann and discovered one of his favorite subjects: houses and vernacular architecture. The success of Hopper’s Gloucester watercolors transformed his work in all media and set the stage for his monumental career.

Accompanying a major retrospective at the Cape Ann Museum, including an unprecedented loan of twenty-eight works from the Whitney Museum of American Art, this highly readable and beautifully illustrated volume reveals in great depth the lesser-known story about the influence of a young painter, Josephine Nivison, who became not only Hopper’s wife but also the most trusted force underlying his artistic confidence. Here she is recast as principal producer of Hopper’s distinctive style and his “brand” visionary from the time of their courtship until his death in 1967.

About the Author:

Elliot Bostwick Davis is a former curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the John Moors Cabot Chair at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and director of the Norton Museum. She has published extensively on American art, including Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Mary Cassatt, and Jamie Wyeth, as well as on African American artists.
