Anastasia Young, Paul Wells
ID: 18030
Видавництво: Hoaki

A detailed and abundantly-illustrated reference that focuses on the innovative curved score folding for sheet metal techniques to create beautiful, dynamic three-dimensional forms, much like metal origami, in jewellery and metalsmithing.

Anastasia Young and Paul Wells, both renowned London-based jewellers, authors and lecturers, have created a practical visual handbook on curved scoring and folding techniques applied to jewellery and metalsmithing for small objects. The book’s clear, hands-on approach, with explanatory photographs for each step, makes it an invaluable resource. Readers will discover a variety of ways to score and fold metal and give it different finishes, shaping flat sheets into to visually organic forms, including guides on the tools needed for each method. A final section contains useful resources, from a detailed analysis of score depth based on the gauge of the wire used to information about where to source materials and facts about metalworking and jewellery in general.

About the Authors:

Anastasia Young is a London-based jewelry artist, author and lecturer whose work has been exhibited internationally. Young's eclectic jewelry is often project-based and driven by a combination of ideas and technical investigation; she uses narrative to explore both the design of a piece and its display when not being worn. Examples of her work are held in the permanent collections of the Science Museum, London and Central Saint Martins Museum. Young is a graduate of the Royal College of Art and Central Saint Martins, where she lectures and teaches short courses in jewelry making. Having written three technical jewellery books (Thames & Hudson, A&C Black) which have been translated into seven languages, Young is well known as an educator and through her teaching and writing. In 2017, Anastasia was appointed to the board of the Association for Contemporary Jewellery, and is also the Technical Features Editor of its biannual magazine, Findings.

Paul Wells is an award-winning London-based silversmith and jeweller, renowned for his use of direct metalworking techniques. Wells' silverware makes innovative use of fold-forming and he has developed a method of creating curved scores which can be used to fold sheet metal in a visually stunning and unique style. His technique has been recognized by Goldsmiths' Crafts and Design Council with two Gold Awards for Technological Innovation. Wells' exploration of this technique has led to the production of intrinsically organic silver forms which almost appear to have grown themselves into existence, creating confounding biomorphic designs that are both functional and decorative. Having taught at several London colleges for two decades, Paul Wells is a respected educator and keen advocate of fold-forming, and has contributed to many books published by Quarto, Thames & Hudson and A&C Black.

Kevin Cummins

Видавництво: Rizzoli

A definitive collection of photographs of the legendary and influential band New Order. New Order remains one of the most popular bands of the last half-century. Founded in the dying years of punk and disco, and combining elements of post-punk, new wave, and electronic dance music, New Order was responsible for some of the biggest hits of the era and is one of few bands to have achieved mainstream success while retaining cult status. Having been the most trusted photographer of Joy Division in the 1970s, Kevin Cummins was uniquely placed to document the rise and fall of New Order, from their formation in 1980 to their split in 1993. From underground beginnings as the flagship group of Factory Records in Manchester to grandstand tours around Europe and America, Cummins captured the band in every light, from the intimacy of the studio to the frenetic energy of live performance. Collected here for the first time are more than a hundred photographs reflecting over a decade of New Order. Prefaced by a selection of rarely-seen ephemera, conversations with the band members, and an introduction from Douglas Coupland, this is a stunning celebration of a band whose influence on music and fashion is still palpable today.

About the Author:

Kevin Cummins’s photographs are included in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and have been published in several monographs, including Joy Division. Douglas Coupland is a best-selling Canadian novelist, essayist, playwright, and screenwriter. Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, Gillian Gilbert, and Stephen Morris are founding members of New Order

New Wave Clay unpicks the zeitgeist and aesthetic of an exciting discipline with intelligence, insight and indulgence.

Against the backdrop of the digital age and shiny screens, a whole new generation of craftspeople, designers and artists are realizing the pleasure of working with clay and bringing a fresh perspective to the material. Today, there is a lively crossover between craft, design, sculpture and technology that is rethinking ceramics: what you can make with it, what it looks like and who makes it.

New Wave Clay is a global survey of 55 imaginative ceramicists that are leading this craft revival. They include classically trained potters who create design-led pieces, product designers who use clay as a means of creative expression, as well as fine artists, architects, decorators, illustrators, sculptors and graphic designers. Their collective output goes far beyond pots into ceramic furniture, sculpture, murals, wall reliefs, small-scale architecture and 3D printing.

The book is divided into four thematic sections and features special contributions from Edmund de Waal, Hella Jongerius, Grayson Perry, Martin Brudnizki and Sarah Griffin discussing craft, industry, ornament, decorating and collecting.

New Wave Clay is an image-led, dynamic study of the exciting new generation jumpstarting this age-old art.

Features:

• A 296-page survey of 55 international ceramicists who bridge the worlds of product design, interiors, fine art and luxury craftsmanship.
• Four thematic chapters are accompanied by interviews and written contributions on the subject from designers, decorators and collectors.
• Richly illustrated, New Wave Clay is an image-led, dynamic book that aims to demonstrate the contemporary condition of this age-old art.
• Instead of focusing on traditional craft ware and functional pieces, this title focuses on the community of ceramicists who create design-led works.

Nick Waplington, with an introduction by Simon Baker
ID: 16795
Видавництво: Phaidon

An expansive and timely survey on contemporary British photographer and artist Nick Waplington, with work spanning his entire 40-year career – his first comprehensive retrospective volume

London- and New York-based artist Nick Waplington uses photography to capture the complex and far-reaching aspects of our lived experience. He rose to prominence in the early 1990s with Living Room and has since become known for his unfiltered depictions of people and places, and the sociopolitical backgrounds that define them.

From the chaos, violence, and euphoria of riots, protests, and free parties to the surreal, hypnotic quiet of his large-format landscapes, Waplington’s work (in all its messy humanness) transcends stereotypes and confounds expectations, and this book is no exception. Including never-before-published images, offering new insight into both well- and lesser-known projects, as well as Waplington’s painting and artistic practice, the book opens with a newly commissioned introduction from Simon Baker, one of the leading curators of contemporary photography in Europe and director of the Maison Européenne de la photographie (MEP), Paris.

This is the most extensive survey of Waplington's work to date, and includes previously unpublished photographs, as well as paintings, sketchbooks, and other artworks that complement his practice.

About the Authors:

Nick Waplington is a British artist living between London and New York. He has published extensively throughout his career, including Safety in Numbers (1995), Truth or Consequences (Phaidon, 2001), Working Process (2013), a collaboration with Alexander McQueen, Hackney Riviera (2019), and Anaglypta (2020). Waplington has exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, and in 2015, was the first living British artist to have a solo photographic exhibition in the main galleries of Tate Britain, London.

Simon Baker is a curator, writer, and educator, and is currently director of the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris. Formerly, he was senior curator of international art at the Tate Modern, London

Nightclubs and discothèques are hotbeds of contemporary culture.

Throughout the 20th century, they have been centres of the avant-garde that question the established codes of social life and experiment with different realities, merging interior and furniture design, graphics and art with sound, light, fashion and special effects to create a modern Gesamtkunstwerk.

Night Fever. Designing Club Culture 1960 – Today is the first book to offer a comprehensive overview of the design history of the nightclub, examining its cultural context and international scope. Examples range from the Italian clubs of the 1960s created by the protagonists of Radical Design to the legendary Studio 54 where Andy Warhol was a regular and the Palladium in New York, designed by Arata Isozaki, Philippe Starck’s Les Bains Douches in Paris and the more recent Double Club in London, conceived by German artist Carsten Höller for the Prada Foundation, as well as more recent concepts by architecture studio OMA for the Ministry of Sound II in London.

Featuring films and vintage photographs, posters, flyers, and fashion, Night Fever takes the reader on a fascinating journey through a world of glamour, subculture, and the search for the night that never ends.

The Many Facets of Niki de Saint Phalle

Niki de Saint Phalle loved pseudo-orders, which she used to arbitrarily assemble terms and pictograms on a sheet of paper. Under the heading “I Love,” for example, the sign of a snake could be found next to the emblem for justice, an orange spot for the corresponding color next to two stars as a symbol for astrology. Niki de Saint Phalle A–Z takes the same liberty and puts the many facets of Niki de Saint Phalle’s work into the order of the alphabet. This logical order is deceptive, though. From A as in AIDS to Z as in Zurich Angel, from B as in Bride to V as in Vanitas, a mosaic of concepts emerges that filters out the various levels of meaning in her manifold oeuvre and playfully engages them in mutual commentary.

Niki de Saint Phalle (1930–2002) was one of the most important artists and sculptors of her generation. Growing up in Paris and New York, she returned to Paris in the 1950s, where she began her artistic career with her legendary “shooting” series. Her sensual female figures, the Nanas, gained her widespread popularity.

About the Author:

Art scholar Katharina Sykora (*1955) was a professor at the University of Bochum and Braunschweig University of Art from 1994 to 2018. Her fields of research include the construction of authorship, gender and transmediality.

A Legendary Artist Revisited

Unknown to many, Niko Pirosmani is revered as a legend in his native Georgia. Conveying a sense of poignant empathy, his portraits, animal paintings, landscapes and scenes from everyday life painted around 1900 in a flourishing Tbilisi draw on medieval iconography and testify to a deeply felt sense of belonging. At the same time, the avant-garde recognised a novel and radically new form of painting in his work. Like Henri Rousseau or Marc Chagall, Pirosmani is one of the exceptional yet difficult to categorize proponents of early modern art.

This catalogue demonstrates Pirosmani's qualities in numerous illustrations, showing how his rapid brushstrokes on black oilcloth give the sparsely applied colors a glow as if coming from a dark depth. Pirosmani was a master of concentration-and a storyteller. As expertly explained in the catalogue by a selection of Georgian art historians, he was a unique artist, a contradictory figure and an important part of the art scene in Tbilisi, then considered the "Paris of the East."

About the Author:

Born into a peasant family, Niko Pirosmani (1862 – 1918) arrived in Tbilisi in 1870. Painting portraits and tavern signs for room and board, he came to the attention of the Georgian and Russian avant-garde in 1912, who presented him a year later as the “Rousseau of the East” in the Moscow exhibition Mischen alongside works of Natalia Goncharova, Mikhail Larionov, Kazimir Malevich and Marc Chagall. An exhibition in Paris was planned, yet never to happen due to the First World War. Pirosmani died impoverished in 1918. Today he is Georgia’s most celebrated artist.

Featuring breathtaking photographs of masks created by a renowned twenty-first-century craftsman, this book provides a unique perspective into noh and kyogen, two of the oldest surviving forms of theater in the world.

Kitazawa Hideta is a traditional Japanese master craftsman, Shinto-temple carver and mask maker for both classical noh and kyogen theater. This gorgeous volume features more than sixty of his performance masks, presented in striking full-page photographs that allow readers to appreciate their level of detail. These meticulous creations are carved from hinoki wood, decorated with layers of gesso-paint, and thin watercolor antiquing, and sometimes include materials such as horsehair and gold paint.

Readers are introduced first to classical and then to contemporary noh and kyogen masks and are invited into Hideta’s workshop to explore the characteristics of the wood he uses, and the processes of creating, restoring, and wearing the masks. An overview of the basic elements of noh and kyogen theater, and reflections from museums that have worked with Kitazawa, complete this vibrant, immersive journey that celebrates the work of a contemporary artist who is not only preserving a centuriesold theatrical tradition, but also remaking it for modern audiences.

About the Authors:

Jannette Cheong is a poet, playwright, and designer. She has collaborated with Oshima Noh Theatre, Richard Emmert, and Kitazawa Hideta for almost two decades. Uniquely, she has written three noh pieces in English: Pagoda (2009, 2011); Opposites-InVerse (2017), blending noh, opera and ballet; and Between the Stones (2020). She lives in London.

It seems familiar because it was everyone's dream of America; and it was unique because only Rockwell managed to bring it to life with such authority. This was, perhaps, an America that never existed, but it was an America the public wanted to exist. And Rockwell put it together from elements that were there for everyone to see.

Norman Rockwell helped preserve American myths, but, more than that, he recreated them and made them palatable for new generations. His function was to reassure people, to remind them of old values in times of rapid change.

About the Author:

Christopher Finch was born in Guernsey, Channel Islands, in 1939 and came to the United States in 1968 to join the curatorial staff of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. His books include the best sellers Norman Rockwell’s America, The Art of Walt Disney, and Rainbow, a biography of Judy Garland, which was turned into a motion picture for NBC television.

It is our most passionate music, rooted in ancient Africa but brought to blossom in America at the doorstep of the twentieth century. It is a living heritage of song born in poverty, persecution, and hard labor, born of love and love betrayed, of holiness and sin, the pleasures and the pains of the flesh, the experience of tragedy, comedy, drunkenness, despair, desolation, and pure joy. It is the blues.

At root, the blues is rich in its simplicity, but it has flowered across the years in a variety of rare complexity. Perhaps no form of popular art is more immediately appealing than the blues, yet so rewards a thorough knowledge of its finer points. In eleven authoritative essays commissioned especially for the book, Nothing But the Blues traces the African-American origins of the music, its early development as popular entertainment, its early recorded manifestations, its regional differentiation (Mid-South, Tidewater-Piedmont, Chicago, Detroit, New York, Los Angeles), its many stylistic dimensions, and its contemporary manifestations. Country blues, urban blues, the evolution of rhythm and blues, rock 'n' roll, and the blues revival are all fully covered.

But the written history is only part of the story. Blues fans have always treasured rare photographs of their heroes, and Nothing But the Blues is gloriously illustrated with posed and candid shots of the musicians as well as photographs of such one-of-a-kind artifacts and documents as Leadbelly's NYPD rap sheet and classic recording contracts. Nothing But the Blues features an introduction by one of the genre's living legends, B. B. King, and a comprehensive "best of the best" discography, including current and rereleased recordings as well as the collectors' treasures to go after.

Blues is more popular than ever before. Not only are reissues of historical blues classics selling in unprecedented numbers, but a whole new crop of vital young blues artists is active in clubs and on record today. Nothing But the Blues is a lavishly illustrated comprehensive history of the music and the musicians, as well as the promoters, producers, and others who have shaped--and continue to shape--this powerful and enduringly popular American musical art form.

Foreword by Jeffrey Schnapp, Edited by Tod's No_Code
ID: 15791
Видавництво: Rizzoli

Innovating to overcome obstacles is the leading theme of post-pandemic development. When innovation is combined with the ability to be a visionary, excellence is achieved.

The world is full of people who can inspire us, but their legacies are really defined by whether they are true visionaries. Beyond their ideas or words, this is determined by their projects and the tangible consequences of their actions on our way of living and thinking in the contemporary world.

After the previous project on Silicon Valley, this book presents a selection of new talents who have distinguished themselves in different fields (design, research, eco-sustainability, architecture, thinkers, food, NFTs, and more) and who promise to carry on the legacies of past visionaries, entering our imagination as visionaries of the future.
