A fantastic source of inspiration, the book gives insight into the inner workings and private inspiration of creatives from the world of advertising, design, graphic design, fashion design, art, street art, and illustration. Intimate and often unseen, sketchbooks document the sources of inspiration as well as the journey to final execution. Providing a showcase of ideas, the sketchbooks themselves are complemented by interviews where the artists explain how they use their sketchbooks and how these relate to finished works, giving readers a direct and unmediated insight into the process of research and creation.

City streets shout with billboards, fly posters and corporate advertising. They almost invite a subversive response ... and increasingly they are getting one. Many of today’s graffiti artists have taken to the stencil and spray-can, and are using the street as a giant creative forum for their arresting artwork. ‘The image,’ says San Diego artist Shepard Fairey, ‘is integrated with the texture of the street.’

This book showcases the work of the originators, the innovators and the new generation who, as UK artist Nylon puts it, are ‘breathing life into derelict spaces’. Stencil graffiti is beginning to filter off the street, too, as artists are inspired to work on canvas, clothing and metal, influencing style magazines and the new media.

Tristan Manco has talked to the major players on and off the street, and has chosen over 400 of the most visually exuberant, subtle and creative examples of the genre from cities all over the world. With subject matter ranging from the political to the poetic, and from the funky to the frankly curious, stencil graffiti is graphic innovation on an international scale. Inspirational in form and content, Stencil Graffiti is an essential record for everyone with an interest in contemporary design – and anyone who wants a finger on the global pulse of urban culture.

Stencil Republic is a pure celebration of the art of the stencil

The 20 stencils featured, printed on perforated card stock so that they can be cut out and used, have been created by international artists from across the street art scene, from the old masters to the new kids on the block. The laser cutting process used to create the stencils allows the artwork to be reproduced in very fine detail.

Each artist has created an in-situ photograph to accompany their stencil, showing how they would use it, along with other imagery. There is also a short interview with each artist.

A collector's item in its own right, Stencil Republic is a book that can be used and treasured or can simply be an inspiration to others to create.

The popularity of sticker art has rocketed among contemporary urban artists, but the medium's history stretches back to the 1950s and is intertwined with the growth of the advertising industry. Countless urban artists have cited the fight against ubiquitous consumer manipulation as their reason for choosing to work so publicly in the streets.

In the early 20th century the medium became popular with the Dadaists; in the 1960s artists started to use large-size posters. In the late 1970s, the so-called 'Suicide Club' and 'Billboard Liberation Front' became known through their altered advertising posters. Only a few urban artists revealed their identities and they often felt ill at ease in the sterile atmosphere of galleries, chose their own paths and captured their own audiences.

However, the greatest creative act of rebellion in urban spaces was the graffiti movement ...
