About the Authors:

Richard Thomson has held the Watson Gordon Chair of Fine Art at the University of Edinburgh since 1996. An expert on late 19th- and early 20th-century French art, Thomson has published widely in this important and lively field.
Rodolphe Rapetti is Chief Curator of Heritage at the Directorate of Museums of France in Paris.

The editor:

Rainer Metzger studied art history, history, and German literature in Munich and Augsburg. In 1994, he earned his Ph.D. on the subject of Dan Graham, and subsequently worked as a fine arts journalist for the Viennese newspaper Der Standard. He has written numerous books on art, including volumes on van Gogh and Chagall. Since 2004, he has worked as Professor of art history at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe.

Around 1900, the Viennese Secession and the Wiener Werkstätte turned Vienna into the birthplace of modernism. This opulent publication on Viennese modernism (1890–1918) focuses on famous ornamental works by Gustav Klimt, erotic depictions of the body by Egon Schiele, and works by other artists, architects, furniture designers, and craftspeople from the Viennese Secession and the Wiener Werkstätte. Pop star. Soap boxes and celebrities

Andy Warhol (1928–1987) is hailed as the most important proponent of the Pop Art movement. A critical and creative observer of American society, he explored key themes of consumerism, materialism, media, and celebrity.

Drawing on contemporary advertisements, comic strips, consumer products, and Hollywood s most famous faces, Warhol proposed a radical reevaluation of what constituted artistic subject matter. Through Warhol, a Campbell s soup can and Coca Cola bottle became as worthy of artistic status as any traditional still life. At the same time, Warhol reconfigured the role of the artist. Famously stating I want to be a machine, he systematically reduced the presence of his own authorship, working with mass-production methods and images, as well as dozens of assistants in a studio he dubbed The Factory.

The Wiener Werkstatte ("Vienna Workshop") bears many hallmarks of a modern creative movement.

Founded in 1903 by Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser, and Fritz Waerndorfer, this progressive alliance of artists and designers was particularly interested in challenging industrialised society with individual handcraftsmanship, and in bringing different facets of life into one unified, elegant artwork. The workshop began life in three small rooms but soon expanded to fill a three-storey building with special departments for metalwork, leatherwork, and woodwork, as well as a bookbinder and a paint shop. Artists experimented with various materials such as gold, precious stones, and papier-mache and applied their simple, often geometric, designs across ceramics, textiles, typography, interior design, furniture, and fashion.

In architectural commissions such as the Purkersdorf Sanatorium and the Palais Stoclet in Brussels, the group was able to realize its ideal of the Gesamtkunstwerk ("total artwork"), in which every detail of an environment was designed as an integral part of a coordinated whole.

Though the workshop lasted only 30 years, it enjoyed major commercial success, with outlets in Karlsbad, Marienbad, Zurich, New York, and Berlin. It also garnered designs from many of the leading artists of the epoch, including Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, and Egon Schiele. Today, the Vienna Workshop is recognized for its comprehensive approach to artistic practice and its stylistic influence on Art Deco and Bauhaus.
