Despite the borders of the USSR being closed to majority of its population, Soviet citizens were among the world’s most frequent flyers.

This book unfolds the story of Soviet air travel, from early carriers like Deruluft and Dobrolet, to the enigmatic Aeroflot. Organised like an Air Force, with a vast fleet of aircraft and helicopters, Aeroflot was the world’s biggest air carrier of passengers and cargo, responsible for a wider range of duties than any other airline. Aeroflot – Fly Soviet uses beautiful graphic ephemera to illustrate a parallel aviation universe that existed for 70 years, from the very beginning of the USSR through to its demise in 1991.

Alastair Duncan
ID: 4637
Издательство: Thames & Hudson

Sumptuously illustrated with over 1,000 illustrations and written by one of the world’s leading experts, Art Deco Complete will be the definitive work on the subject for many years to come.

In the most comprehensive account of the decorative arts of the Art Deco period ever assembled, Alastair Duncan celebrates the rich variety of form and diverse international roots that have made it a perennial favourite of collectors and a constant source of inspiration for designers.

Straddling two World Wars and the Great Depression, ushering in the Jazz Age and the era of the automobile and skyscraper, and shaping everything from the Golden Gate Bridge to the humble desk lamp, the story of Art Deco is the story of our modern world.

In its purest forms, it developed from a characteristically French image of luxury and refinement. Later, modernist European and American designers incorporated metal and plastic in styles described as ‘Streamline Moderne’, but which are now called ‘Deco’. Although Paris was the spiritual home of the movement, Art Deco was a truly global style, with designers from every country in Europe and the Americas inspired by a vast international catalogue of artistic and craft traditions.

The guide begins with essays on the major media of the period: Furniture and Interior Decoration; Sculpture; Paintings, Graphics, Posters and Bookbinding; Glass; Ceramics; Lighting; Textiles; Silver, Metal, Lacquer and Enamel; and Jewelry, each followed by lavishly illustrated in-depth biographies of the major designers and artists working in the medium.

The second half of the book is an authoritative illustrated A–Z listing of all significant designers in the Art Deco style, comprising over four hundred entries.

About the author:

Alastair Duncan was for many years an officer and consultant of Christie’s, New York, and is now an independent consultant on the decorative arts of the 19th and 20th centuries. He is the author of many books on the Art Deco period, including Art Nouveau and Art Deco Lighting, Art Deco Furniture, American Art Deco and Art Nouveau and Art Deco Bookbinding.

With over 1000 illustrations in colour and black and white

Энциклопедия начинается серией эссе, посвященных мебели и декору интерьеров, скульптуре, живописи, графике, плакату и книжным переплетам. The Bauhaus, the school of art and design founded in Germany in 1919 and shut down by the Nazis in 1933, brought together artists, architects and designers in an extraordinary conversation about modern art.

Bauhaus 1919–1933, published to accompany a major multimedia exhibition at MoMA, is the first comprehensive treatment of the subject by MoMA since 1938 and offers a new generational perspective on the 20th century’s most influential experiment in artistic education. It brings together works in a broad range of mediums, including industrial design, furniture, architecture, graphics, photography, textiles, ceramics, theatre and costume design, and painting and sculpture – many of which have rarely if ever been seen outside of Germany.

Featuring about 400 colour plates and a rich range of documentary images, this publication includes two overarching images by the exhibition’s curators, Leah Dickerman and Barry Bergdoll, concise interpretive essays on key objects by over twenty leading scholars, and an illustrated, narrative chronology.

Marion von Osten, Grant Watson
ID: 12418
Издательство: Thames & Hudson

A rare and fascinating look at the Bauhaus’s global legacy, and a central publication of the school’s centenary celebrations

From its inception in 1919, the Bauhaus was a truly international institution. Students and teachers travelled from Croatia, Hungary, Japan, Palestine, Russia, Switzerland and the United States to Weimar and later Dessau and Berlin to become part of the school, drawn to the Bauhaus because of its cosmopolitan, avant-garde perspective and hands-on curriculum. This outlook was reflected in the way the school received and interpreted diverse influences, ranging from Arts and Crafts to reform pedagogy, from Eastern spirituality to constructivism, machine production and the Neues Bauen (New Building) movement. Art and design at the Bauhaus also contained a transcultural element, gleaned through exposure to non-western cultures, books and museum collections and interaction with foreign students and visiting lecturers.

Featuring contributions from artists, historians, cultural theorists and others, Bauhaus Imaginista offers a rare opportunity to explore a history of transcultural exchange in the 20th century through the specific lens of the Bauhaus and its reception in different geographies and time periods. Part of the large-scale project marking the school’s centenary, its focus is on the experimental, open-ended character of modernism as well as its inherent cosmopolitanism. As never before, it shows the crucial role the Bauhaus had in reimagining the relationship between art and society.

About the Authors:

Marion von Osten is a curator, researcher and writer based in Berlin. Her previous publications include, as co-editor, Colonial Modern: Aesthetics of the Past, Rebellions for the Future and Transcultural Modernisms.

Grant Watson is a London-based curator and researcher. Recent projects include How We Behave with If I Cant Dance, Amsterdam, exploring questions of life practice and politics through filmed interviews (2014-present).

A luxuriously illustrated book published to follow the historic and elegant Borbonese brand. This highly collectible volume takes a look at the lavish world of Borbonese, the historic Italian brand founded in Turin in 1910 that produces luxury handbags, jewelry, and accessories, combining the finest materials and manufacturing techniques with expert craftsmanship.

With a history spanning more than a century, Borbonese designs remain classic and timeless, with the O.P. (partridge-eye) print as the brand’s symbol and trademark. It is this unique texture presented in innovative ways, along with other distinctive elements on their iconic handbags, which have helped define Borbonese as one of the most distinguished brands in Italian fashion.

Borbonese is known for their beautiful bags and scarves, still synonymous with quality and high style; however, the accessories range has evolved over time to include clothing and leather garments, as well as goods for the home, for a style that represents true “global living.” The book is divided into four chapters, each introduced by a different writer, which correspond to the animals that inspire Borbonese’s classic designs: the butterfly, partridge, owl, and horse.

About the Author:

Ginevra Elkann is an author, curator, producer, and director based in Italy. She is on the advisory board of Christie’s and also serves as vice president of the Pinacoteca Giovanni and Marella Agnelli, Turin. Author Calvin Klein
ID: 15890
Издательство: Rizzoli

This book is published with three unique covers.  Customers will receive one of the covers at random when they purchase the book.

This magnificent survey is the first and only book that Klein has written and compiled himself and is illustrated with era-defining photographs by the most distinguished names in fashion photography, from Irving Penn and Richard Avedon to Bruce Weber, and Patrick Demarchelier — among others. In it, the world’s most iconic models like Christy Turlington and Kate Moss, are captured in images that would define their careers, and remain indelible to the consumer. Accompanied by private insights and behind-the-scenes stories that only he could tell, every image has been chosen by Calvin Klein to narrate his evolution as a designer — from couture to jeans, underwear, and fragrance — all categories in which he redefined what was chic and essential.

As an icon of minimalism, modernism, sexual provocation, and androgyny, Calvin Klein’s first book will find broad appeal with anyone interested in design, fashion, or photography. Few names in fashion are as recognizable as that of Calvin Klein.

This unique book presents a stunning archive of images that reveal his timeless influence as a designer. From founding the company in New York in 1968, he went on to change the face of fashion, bringing his visionary minimalism to the fore and defining looks for generations. Divided by theme, with characteristic simplicity and sophistication, each of the three sections in this volume looks at one singular element of Klein’s approach. In Provocative, we see the most controversial of his campaigns, from Brooke Shields’s infamous teenage portraits to the seductive photography of underwear collections. In Minimalist, we understand the simplicity, refinement, and elegance in every collection. And in the final section, we read in the designer’s own words the insights behind the campaigns and the secrets behind the successes.

About the Author:

Calvin Klein is an American fashion designer. He founded his own company in 1968 and went on to turn the label into one of the most recognizable and successful fashion brands in the world. This is his story told for the first time.

And is Frank Lloyd Wright really the inventor of the carport?

Starchitecture meets supercar across six chapters: Classical Gas, Brutal Power, Contemporary Carchitecture, European Modernism, Space Rage, and Case Study Cars.

Abel González Fernandez, Laura Mott, Andrew Satake Blauvelt
ID: 17334
Издательство: Rizzoli

The first book, accompanying a traveling exhibition, dedicated to Cuban mid-century design anchored by an under-acknowledged collection of graphic design, prototypes, and furniture, much of which has never been exhibited outside the island or published.

Primarily focused on the post-revolutionary era of Cuba from the late 1950s through the 1970s, this volume brings together a prolific cohort of artists, designers, and architects that materialized the ideology of their time, and ultimately narrate the country’s arc from revolutionary promise to authoritarian retrenchment.

Design and architecture played an important role in shaping the country's identity and cultural expression during this time period. Consisting of nearly 100 works, including approximately 50 pieces of furniture, the exhibition and accompanying catalogue features seminal objects of functional design, architectural renderings, speculative prototypes for a “design for all” ethos, and key examples of art and graphic design that contributed to the zeitgeist of the era. The book also includes several examples by contemporary Cuban artists and designers who explore how this post-revolutionary aesthetic survives today.

About the Authors:

Abel González Fernández is a writer and curator based in New York. González Fernández has curated exhibitions in Havana, Berlin, Tokyo, and New York.

Laura Mott is chief curator of Cranbrook Art Museum. An accomplished curator and lecturer, Mott joined Cranbrook in 2013 and has curated and co-curated more than 20 projects for the museum.

Andrew Satake Blauvelt is a curator, historian, critic, designer, and educator whose practice spans the fields of art and culture. He is director of Cranbrook Art Museum, leading the institution’s transformation into a vibrant and diverse cultural destination and community partner.

Hailed in his lifetime as the "poster king," E. McKnight Kauffer's designs for the London transport system, Alfred Hitchcock, and others are an enduring influence on contemporary advertising and graphic arts.

E. McKnight Kauffer (American, 1890-1954) was a pioneering figure who transformed the field of graphic design between the wars. He drew upon the emerging visual languages of Cubism, Vorticism, and Surrealism to create a modern graphic style that shaped the development of commercial art. Through collaborations with his avant-garde peers in art, literature, and design, including the Bloomsbury Group, Marion Dorn, T.S. Eliot, Langston Hughes, Aldous Huxley, and Man Ray, Kauffer expanded the scope and impact of his field.

This groundbreaking publication is the first to address the full range of Kauffer's career, from sophisticated designs for major clients -- including the London transport system, Random House, American Airlines, and Shell, as well as Allied propaganda posters during World War II--to book covers, rugs, costumes, and stage sets. An interdisciplinary group of authors offer critical perspectives on the cultural context of Kauffer's work, bringing new attention to the designer's depictions of race, gender, and global politics.

About the Authors:

Caitlin Condell is associate curator and head of the department of Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design at Cooper Hewitt. Emily M. Orr is assistant curator of Modern and Contemporary American Design at Cooper Hewitt.

A unique exploration of the close relationship between art and design, explored through the historic and contemporary fabric designs of Liberty, where avant-garde art has influenced the colourful, geometric collections for more than half a century

Liberty is renowned internationally for its fabrics, especially its floral patterns, but it also has a long history of developing bold, geometric designs. Many of these have been inspired by early 20th-century avant-garde art, notably by the Italian Futurists – by artists such as Giacomo Balla and Umberto Boccioni – and their English contemporaries the Vorticists, including Christopher Nevinson and Edward Wadsworth.

In anticipation of Liberty’s 150th anniversary, esteemed couturier and interior designer Federico Forquet has curated a striking new range of fabrics – the FuturLiberty Collection – that carries Liberty’s creative heritage into our own age.

The Futurist and Vorticist art that lies behind the new designs is explored by specialists Ester Coen and Richard Cork, while archivist Anna Buruma examines Liberty’s rich history of avant-garde designs. By illuminating the process by which the FuturLiberty Collection came into being, this highly visual study also reveals how art can inform design, making it contemporary, relevant and engaging.

About the Author:

Ester Coen is an expert on Italian Futurism and the international avant-garde. She has been Associate Professor at the University of Florence and Professor at the universities of Udine and L’Aquila. Richard Cork is an art historian, critic, curator and broadcaster. He has been an art critic for the Evening StandardThe ListenerThe Times and the New Statesman, and is a past Turner Prize judge.

Surveying applied arts and industrial design from the 18th century to the present day, this book explores the dynamic relationship between design and manufacturing, and the technological, social and commercial context in which this relationship developed. The effects of a vastly enlarged audience for the products of modern design and the complex dynamic of mass consumption are also discussed. Part of this dynamic reveals that products serve as signs for desires that have little to do with need or function.

The book also explores the impact of a wealth of new man-made industrial materials and tools on the course of modern design - from steel to titanium, plywood to plastic, cotton to nylon, wire to transistors, and microprocessors to nanotubes. The research, development and applications of these technologies are shown as depending upon far-reaching lines of communication stretching across geographical and linguistic boundaries.

Extensively revised and expanded for this second edition, History of Modern Design is an inclusive, well-balanced introduction to a field of increasing scholarly and interdisciplinary research, and provides students in design with historical perspectives of their chosen fields of study.
