About the Author

Nancy M. Berman was the curator of the Hebrew Union College Skirball Museum from 1972 to 1977. She subsequently became director of the museum in 1977. Her career in Jewish art and culture began at the Jewish Museum in New York, where she was assistant curator of the Judaica Department.

This exhibition catalog celebrates this important manuscript, recently acquired by the Cleveland Museum of Art, with exquisite reproductions that bring the illuminated pages to life.

Additional works by the Caporali brothers and relevant art from the museum’s and other collections elucidate the history, style, content, function, and authorship of the missal. Illustrations of a chalice and a paten, a chasuble, and a processional cross enhance the religious and aesthetic context of the manuscript.

The Peter and Irene Ludwig Collection was one of the first in the world to bring together works of US and Soviet art in the time period when they originated. Occasioned by the 30th anniversary of the opening of the iron curtain, in this book, which accompanies the eponymous exhibition at the Gropius Bau, works contained in the Ludwig Collection from both sides of the East-West conflict are compared for the first time.
