Про автора:

About the Author:

Claire Bingham is an interior design journalist and author who has been discovering, writing about and photographing fantastic homes for almost 20 years. Previously, she was home decor editor at Elle Decoration. She writes about interiors, travel, perfume and food for publications around the world, including The Observer and Telegraph magazines, Architectural Digest and House & Garden. She is also the author of numerous books. More is More was her 11 book, with teNeues Publishing. It followed A Scented World, which was published in 2019. The inspirational books Patterns and Colors for which she wrote the forewords will be published in the autumn of 2022 and summer of 2023.

Published by the interdisciplinary design studio MODU, this "field guide" explores threshold spaces between the interior and the exterior. What are experiences between architecture and the environment? Where can the boundaries between the interior and the urban be drawn? What role does the climate crisis play in this? For their research and design projects, Phu Hoang and Rachely Rotem look at three major cities on different continents: New York, Rome, and Tokyo. MODU leaves behind the binary idea of inside and outside and rather understands architecture as an extension of the environment. Thus, it imagines a hybrid of urban space, architecture, and interior space. The book explores the different geographic locations and presents their own design projects.

MODU is a Brooklyn, New York-based design studio working in architecture, urbanism, and interior design. It is led by Phu Hoang and Rachely Rotem and focuses on thinking architecture, urbanism, and the environment together. In 2017, they won the Rome Prize.

The name Montessori is widely and inextricably associated with an entirely child-centered and careful pedagogy and education of children. Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was an Italian physician, reform educator, and philosopher whose ideas and work have remained influential throughout the world ever since the 1910s. Her educational concept covers entire development from infancy to young adulthood. It is based on the image of the child as a “builder of his or her self” and therefore uses for the first time the form of open teaching and free work in a prepared learning environment.

Montessori schools became trend-setting educational institutions early on, and their concept strongly reflects in their architecture and equipment. Montessori Architecture is the first book that comprehensively addresses architectural design, construction, the use of materials in and the furnishing of educational spaces according to Montessori’s ideas. The book’s first part explores spatial and design principles that make up good kindergarten and school buildings. In the second part, nine case studies are featured in detail through photographs, plans, and concise texts. These examples are located in Europe (Netherlands, Belgium, Great Britain) as well as in tropical countries (Burkina Faso, Tanzania, Bangladesh, Sir Lanka). Steve Lawrence is a British architect and consultant on sports infrastructure, specialising in the architectural concepts of Montessori education. Benjamin Stæhli is a Swiss architect and photographer who has also worked in Ethiopia and Singapore, and who has been engaged in architectural concepts of Montessori education for many years.
