Pekka Pitkänen (1927 – 2018) was one of the most significant Finnish architects of the post-war period. He is known as a master of concrete and a steadfast adherent of the modernist approach to architecture. The Chapel of the Holy Cross (1967) in Turku is frequently regarded as Pitkänen’s principal work. From the 1950s to the 1980s, he built numerous residential and commercial buildings in Turku, often in collaboration with the construction company Urakoitsijat Oy. Together with Ola Laiho and Ilpo Raunio, he designed the extension of the Finnish Parliament (1978). Late in his career, he focused on public buildings, his last being Turku Courthouse, completed in 1997.

This book is the first English-language monograph dedicated to Pekka Pitkänen. Based on extensive archival research, interviews, and Pitkänen’s own unpublished memoirs, it presents a singular insight into the life and work of a prolific yet surprisingly little-known modernist architect.

While some architects have a signature style, Renzo Piano seeks to apply coherent ideas to extraordinarily different projects. His buildings impress as much for their individual impact as for their diversity of scale, material, and form. Piano rose to international prominence with his codesign of the Pompidou Center in Paris, described by The New York Times as a building that "turned the architecture world upside down." Since then, he has continued to craft many high-profile cultural spaces, including the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago; the Morgan Library Renovation and Expansion in New York; and, most recently, the Whitney Museum of American Art, an asymmetric nine-story structure in Manhattan's Meatpacking District with both indoor and outdoor galleries.

In New York and London, the Renzo touch has also transformed the skyline with the towers of the New York Times Building and the Shard, the tallest building in the European Union. This essential introduction travels from Osaka, Japan, to Bern, Switzerland, and through many cities, structures, and islands in between, to explore the staggering scope of the Renzo Piano repertoire.

From the "inside-out" Pompidou to the airy shells of the Tjibaou Cultural Center in Noumea, New Caledonia, this is a thrilling journey through the beauty of architecture, where, in Piano's own words, "each time, it is like life starting all over again."

About the series:

Each book in TASCHEN’s Basic Architecture series features:

- an introduction to the life and work of the architect
- the major works in chronological order
- information about the clients, architectural preconditions as well as construction problems and resolutions
- a list of all the selected works and a map indicating the locations of the best and most famous buildings
- approximately 120 illustrations (photographs, sketches, drafts, and plans)

Piano, Virtuoso. The Italian master’s complete oeuvre

Renzo Piano rose to international prominence with his co-design of the Pompidou Center in Paris, described by The New York Times as a building that “turned the architecture world upside down.” Since then, he has continued to craft such iconic cultural spaces as the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago and, more recently, the Whitney Museum of American Art, an asymmetric nine-story structure in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District with both indoor and outdoor galleries. In London, the Piano touch has also transformed the skyline with the Shard.

At the age of 84, the Italian maestro retains all of his enthusiasm and kindness—and his recent roster is more impressive than ever. As he confided to the author, “I think at a certain age, one can discover that there is what the French call the ‘fil rouge,’ a kind of red thread that relates one building to another over time. In my case, I believe it is about lightness and the art of building.” From freshly built museums in Athens and Santander; ongoing works in Lisbon, London, Toronto, and Geneva; to such humanitarian projects as the Emergency Children’s Surgical Hospital in Entebbe, Uganda, and the Children’s Hospice in Bologna, Italy, Piano’s career is a thrilling journey through the beauty and very essence of architecture.

Based on the massive XXL monograph, this widely updated edition brings the architect’s definitive career overview to an accessible format and is illustrated by photographs, sketches, and plans.

The artist:

Renzo Piano (born in 1937) studied at the University of Florence and at Milan’s Polytechnic Institute. A recipient of the RIBA Gold Medal in 1989 and the 1998 Pritzker Prize, Piano’s most iconic projects include the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Shard in London, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. He has his main offices in his native Genoa and in Paris.

The editor:

Philip Jodidio studied art history and economics at Harvard, and edited Connaissance des Arts for over 20 years. His TASCHEN books include the Architecture Now! series and monographs on Tadao Ando, Santiago Calatrava, Renzo Piano, Jean Nouvel, Shigeru Ban, Richard Meier, Zaha Hadid, and soon Norman Foster.

The first monograph on the Dutch landscape gardener Piet Oudolf

A leading figure in the New Perennial planting movement, garden and landscape designer Piet Oudolf emphasizes plant structure as the most important aspect of a successful garden. Perennials – prized for their beauty throughout their life cycle – are used almost exclusively.

Oudolf challenges conventional approaches to gardening that rely on short-lived bursts of colour and constant maintenance and shows the delights of creating lasting, ecologically sound panoramas that relate to the landscape and the seasons.

This glorious full-colour volume features twenty-three of Oudolf's most beautiful public and private gardens, including the widely acclaimed High Line and the Battery in New York City; Wisley, the RHS Garden in Surrey; the Pensthorpe Gardens in Norfolk; the Lurie Garden in Millennium Park in Chicago and Il Giardino delle Vergini at the 2010 Venice Biennale.

Noël Kingsbury's accessible text explains how each garden and the plants selected for it fit the specific environment. Oudolf's detailed plans provide inspiration and insight for all interested in both small personal gardens and large-scale public landscapes.

This groundbreaking guide presents a powerful alternative to traditional horticulture - designed plantings that function like naturally occurring plant communities.

Over time, with industrialization and urban sprawl, we have driven nature out of our neighborhoods and cities. But we can invite it back by designing landscapes that look and function more like they do in the wild: robust, diverse, and visually harmonious. Planting in a Post-Wild World by Thomas Rainer and Claudia West is an inspiring call to action dedicated to the idea of a new nature — a hybrid of both the wild and the cultivated — that can flourish in our cities and suburbs. This is both a post-wild manifesto and practical guide that describes how to incorporate and layer plants into plant communities to create an environment that is reflective of natural systems and thrives within our built world.

About the Authors:

Thomas Rainer and Claudia West, two leading voices in ecological landscape design, reveal how plants fit together in nature and how to use this knowledge to create landscapes that are resilient, beautiful, and diverse. As practical as it is inspiring, Planting in a Post-Wild World is an optimistic manifesto pointing the way to the future of planting design.

The original publication of Planting the Natural Garden ushered in a revolution in landscape design: the New Perennial Movement. Spearheaded by internationally renowned designer Piet Oudolf, and incisively articulated by the late plantsman and designer Henk Gerritsen, it transformed private and public spaces with its emotionally resonant, naturalistic use of hardy perennials and grasses.

Now this classic has been expanded and updated to include scores of new plants and combinations. Packed with practical information and visual inspiration, Planting the Natural Garden zeroes in on the New Perennial Movement’s power to move us, making its distinctive plant palette available to all. For enthusiasts of these vibrant landscapes, it is an essential text; for gardeners who love the dreamy moods and colors that Oudolf and Gerritsen celebrate, it’s the key to a magic kingdom of garden beauty.

__________

Since then, Piet Oudolf has become one of the most iconic and groundbreaking designers of our time, responsible for some of the world's most important gardens, including the High Line, the Lurie Garden, the Battery, and Pottersfield. Fans of Piet Oudolf will delight in this revised edition of Planting the Natural Garden. Packed with plant information, new photography, and an introduction from Noel Kingsbury.

It includes hundreds of eye-catching plant combinations, with an emphasis on the use of themed plantings that create mood and evoke emotion. Also included are plant lists and instructions for placing specific plants in particular habitats, as well as complete growing requirements.

The fourth volume in Thames & Hudsons celebrated series cataloguing the al-Sabah collection, this book features a unique collection of carpets and textile fragments from the pre-Islamic and early Islamic world.

The Sasanian fragments fill a substantial gap in the early history of pile carpets, dating from the second to the eighth century ad, and make a valuable contribution of the understanding of local artistic traditions. The second half of the book is devoted to post-Sasanian and Sogdian silks dating from the sixth to the tenth century. A wave of these beautiful textiles has reached the West since the turn of the 21st century, and here they are divided into variants featuring birds, mammals and mythological creatures, which retain their glowing colours and lively charm.
