The architecture of the single-family house reflects very different lifestyles and realities. Chris van Uffelen has examined this versatile task in Switzerland and Austria (supplemented by South Tyrol). He presents remarkable projects that nevertheless lie within the scope of a middle-class budget and which have unjustly received too little attention so far.

The volume shows how architects in the Alpine region constantly redefine the relationship between contemporary design trends and trendsetting living concepts with traditional and highly distinguished regional building traditions. Exterior and interior photographs, detailed planning material, facts on ecological aspects and the materials used, in combination with well-founded texts offer both diverse inspirations and all required essential information.

An extraordinary variety of well-designed middle-class family dwellings in Germany

Germany is a nation of detached houses. About two-thirds of its residential building stock consists of single-family homes, and with 80,000 to 90,000 new buildings per year, more and more people are fulfilling the dream of their own four walls. The usually biggest private investment is at the same time the most important construction tasks for architects in Germany.

This volume shows a selection of trendsetting and contemporary single-family houses that have so far been wrongly disregarded between mass housing construction on the one hand and luxury villas on the other. Taking into account a maximum price per square meter that does not exceed the middle-class budget, floor plans and layouts, key figures on square meters, facts on environmental aspects, and used materials provide potential builders with practical and inspiring useful information.

Part architectural guidebook and part critique, Sky-High documents the pencil-thin, supertall towers that are transforming New York City's skyline as well as its streets.

New York City's penchant for building skyward has reached new heights with its crop of supertall towers — those that rise at least 984 feet above the sidewalk. The city that never sleeps is also the city that never stops building ever higher, from the Woolworth and Chrysler buildings of an earlier race to the top to today's super luxury aeries of 57th Street's Billionaires' Row and the towers of the World Trade complex in Lower Manhattan.

Bruce Katz's extraordinary photographs capture a dozen of these self-styled odes to wealth and power, alongside Eric P. Nash's incisive critique documenting the evolution of the skyline, past and present, and the supertalls' transformative effects on the contemporary cityscape. Among the twelve buildings featured are One World Trade Center, Three World Trade Center, 30 Hudson Yards, 35 Hudson Yards, One57, 432 Park Avenue, 53West53, Central Park Tower, and One Vanderbilt.

About the Authors:

Eric P. Nash was a researcher and writer for the New York Times for twenty-five years. He is the author of several books about architecture and design, including Manhattan Skyscrapers, MiMo: Miami Modern Revealed, and New York's 50 Best Skyscrapers, and an architectural tour guide in New York City.

Bruce Katz is an architectural photographer whose work has appeared in Architectural Digest, New York Magazine, Landscape Architecture, and the Washington Post. He is on the faculty of the International Center of Photography, and several of his images were recently acquired by the New-York Historical Society.

A major overview of Skylab’s built works, from show-stopping residences to high-profile cultural projects, presented via a covetable book design that takes its inspiration from an album or LP

Skylab: The Nature of Buildings is the first monograph of the Portland, Oregon-based architecture and design studio. Founded by Jeff Kovel in 1999, Skylab has emerged as a leading creative force in the Pacific Northwest and North America. At the vanguard of innovative and sustainable design, the practice is known for a range of spectacular residences designed for leading creatives, as well as distinctive music venues, resorts, and other high-profile projects, including the N M Bodecker Foundation, Nike’s Serena Williams Building, and the Columbia Building. Presenting more than two decades of work, the story of Skylab is told by several influential contributors through reflective essays, interviews, conversations and anecdotes, as well as extensive project photography and illustrations that detail the firm’s design process.

A uniquely crafted object, the book’s design is based on the concept of a double vinyl album, with four 'sides' (A, B, C, D), ten projects 'tracks', inside front- and back-cover gatefolds, and nine project 'interlude' foldout posters in the book.

About the Author:

Fresh perspectives on how good design can create stylish yet ecologically sound living spaces in small-scale homes. Anyone who has faced the challenges of limited living space will find inspiration in this survey of the latest trends in environmentally sensitive, small-scale residential designs. More than fifty residential spaces are profiled — from woodsy houses and repurposed barns to cool apartments and urban lofts — both inside and out. Most of the projects were designed by up-and-coming architects, and each design proves that small-scale efficiency, as well as beautiful, thoughtful design, can overcome the apparent constraints of a small setting. Environmental impact is a growing concern, so each project was chosen because of its ecological sensitivity. Each case history describes the challenges confronting the designer and the solutions. Creating color schemes to enhance the feeling of openness, taking advantage of high ceilings to make multiple levels, and using collapsible furniture and sliding doors to maximize space are some of the design solutions that can be applied in any situation. Filled with beautiful color photographs and helpful floorplans, this book is a remarkable showcase of how good design can transform any small space into a comfortable, modern — and environmentally sensitive — home.

About the Authors:

Cristina Paredes Benítez has degrees in fine arts and in information science. She is an editor specializing in illustrated books and she has collaborated with several publishers and photo agencies.

Where does one stow clothing, bicycles, suitcases, or bed linens? Where is the perfect place for the desk, bed, or couch? How does one use less square meters more effectively?

Compact flats perched atop the roofs on high-rise buildings. A one-bedroom apartment that houses a family of four. Stairs that cleverly transform into wardrobes. A collection of cozy cocoons shows the personality and innovation of those living inside: a home is both shelter and a welcoming reflection of the residents. The most effective and appealing breakthroughs in houses built within the past five years — to make the most of every foot of space.

Forget the McMansions; budgets aren’t what they used to be, houses are smaller, and lifestyles are changing rapidly. Clients today want to create a home that is easy to maintain, environmentally responsible, and inexpensive to operate. Own less, live more.

Ranging from glass cabins to copper-clad tree houses, Small Innovative Houses features an international collection of more than fifty residences in North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Discover how to use flexible space and make the most of a narrow lot, how to use every square foot of living space, while also responding to rising ecological concerns and skyrocketing energy bills. Examples include a mountain barn converted into a modern vacation home in Switzerland; a mobile home built on a flatbed trailer chassis that can be transported on U.S. highways; a Japanese sunken house with movable partitions that creates as many as nine rooms; a summer cabin in Norway that appears to float above the ground; and a spectacular glass cabin in the wilds of Alberta, Canada.

From world-famous architects (Steven Holl, Todd Saunders, Snøhetta, and Tadao Ando) to the freshest new talent, this book reveals architectural invention on a whole new small scale.

About the Author:

Philip Jodidio studied art history and economics at Harvard, and was editor-in-chief of the leading French art journal Connaissance des Arts for over two decades. He has published numerous articles and more than 100 books, including Rizzoli’s Tadao Ando Houses and I. M. Pei: The Complete Works.

The first-ever spomenik guidebook, with over 75 examples alongside map references and information on why they exist and who built them.

Spomenik’ the Serbo-Croat/Slovenian word for ‘monument’ – refers to a series of memorials built in Tito’s Republic of Yugoslavia from the 1960s-1990s, marking the horror of the occupation and the defeat of Axis forces during World War II. Hundreds were built across the country, from coastal resorts to remote mountains. Through these imaginative forms of concrete and steel, a classless, forward-looking, socialist society, free of ethnic tensions, was envisaged.

Instead of looking to the ideologically aligned Soviet Union for artistic inspiration, Tito turned to the west and works of abstract expressionism and minimalism. As a result, Yugoslavia was able to develop its own distinct identity through these brutal monuments, which were used as political tools to articulate Tito’s personal vision of a new tomorrow. Today, following the breakup of the country and the subsequent Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s, some have been destroyed or abandoned. Many have suffered the consequences of ethnic tensions – once viewed as symbols of hope they are now the focus of resentment and anger.

This book brings together the largest collection of spomeniks published to date. Each has been extensively photographed and researched by the author, to make this book the most comprehensive survey of this obscure and fascinating architectural phenomenon.

A fold-out map on the reverse of the dust jacket shows the exact location of each spomenik using GPS coordinates.

A richly illustrated and elegant volume showcasing beautifully designed stables by contemporary architects and designers the world over.

From a ranch in the U.S. and a Finnish farmstead to a Spanish hacienda and Australian outback home, Stables is a celebration of horses and their extraordinary lodgings. International in scope, ranging from traditional to contemporary in flavor, these stables -- built of wood, metal, and stone -- are exemplars of the finest taste in design.

The allure of housing horses is a story of architecture, design, landscape, and a unique way of living in magnificent places -- and spaces -- that are made exclusively for horses and for those who love them. The book also explores indoor and outdoor arenas, paddocks, and gardens, providing a humane face to the otherwise functional buildings. Social spaces for the horses, riders, and visitors also play an important role in filling out the projects, making stables not just places for sport but also for entertainment and leisure.

There is a beauty here that reflects the majesty of these animals, the distinctive landscapes in which they are set, and the creative visions of the owners, architects, and designers who have all brought them into being. Beautifully photographed, the book is sure to interest horse aficionados as well as all those interested in engaging, clean, human-scaled design.
