An extraordinary variety of well-designed middle-class family dwellings in Germany

Germany is a nation of detached houses. About two-thirds of its residential building stock consists of single-family homes, and with 80,000 to 90,000 new buildings per year, more and more people are fulfilling the dream of their own four walls. The usually biggest private investment is at the same time the most important construction tasks for architects in Germany.

This volume shows a selection of trendsetting and contemporary single-family houses that have so far been wrongly disregarded between mass housing construction on the one hand and luxury villas on the other. Bruce Katz's extraordinary photographs capture a dozen of these self-styled odes to wealth and power, alongside Eric P. Nash's incisive critique documenting the evolution of the skyline, past and present, and the supertalls' transformative effects on the contemporary cityscape. About the Authors:

Eric P. Nash was a researcher and writer for the New York Times for twenty-five years. He is the author of several books about architecture and design, including Manhattan Skyscrapers, MiMo: Miami Modern Revealed, and New York's 50 Best Skyscrapers, and an architectural tour guide in New York City.

Bruce Katz is an architectural photographer whose work has appeared in Architectural Digest, New York Magazine, Landscape Architecture, and the Washington Post. He is on the faculty of the International Center of Photography, and several of his images were recently acquired by the New-York Historical Society.

Spomenik’ the Serbo-Croat/Slovenian word for ‘monument’ – refers to a series of memorials built in Tito’s Republic of Yugoslavia from the 1960s-1990s, marking the horror of the occupation and the defeat of Axis forces during World War II. Hundreds were built across the country, from coastal resorts to remote mountains. Through these imaginative forms of concrete and steel, a classless, forward-looking, socialist society, free of ethnic tensions, was envisaged. 

Instead of looking to the ideologically aligned Soviet Union for artistic inspiration, Tito turned to the west and works of abstract expressionism and minimalism. As a result, Yugoslavia was able to develop its own distinct identity through these brutal monuments, which were used as political tools to articulate Tito’s personal vision of a new tomorrow. Today, following the breakup of the country and the subsequent Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s, some have been destroyed or abandoned. Many have suffered the consequences of ethnic tensions – once viewed as symbols of hope they are now the focus of resentment and anger.
