Russia - Even after the fall of the Iron Curtain, Russia remains a nation shrouded in mystery. The country's modern aesthetic includes vestiges of its past that combine and collide with its present, reflected in such unusual imagery as an ornate palace which now houses a hip-hop rehearsal studio, and the stained-glass windows of a church that immortalize the icons of the proletariat. Photographer Andrew Moore explores Russia's majestic beauty and paralyzing decay with striking honesty, often finding them in the same frame. Russia: Beyond Utopia is an intricate hybrid of modern Russia'sunresolved past and uncertain present, revealing a country on the cusp of a new era.

Andrew Moore's works are represented in the collections of the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Inside Havana was his first published monograph.

Garden historian Peter Hayden narrates a comprehensive history of the parks and gardens of Russia, spanning a thousand years from the first Byzantine-influenced gardens in the 10th century AD, through to the present day. Along the way, he discusses the influence of Peter the Great, who introduced ideas, plants and designers from Holland, France and Germany to create St Petersburg's Summer Garden and the great formal garden at Peterhof by the Gulf of Finland. The introduction of the English style of landscaping owed much to Catherine the Great, and British gardeners were recruited to layout parks for the Empress and rich nobles.

With a wealth of illustration and with detailed discussion of some of the most beautiful and historically interesting parks and gardens in the world, this pioneering book promises to become an instant classic.

Who has not dreamed of an idyllic house in the country? Rustic architecture is the expression of an aesthetic concerned primarily with the informal beauty of the natural world. Often set upon craggy peaks, on cliffs overlooking wild seas, beside calm riverbanks, or in the depths of old forests, houses in the Rustic Style engage the eye and rouse the poetic soul by means of picturesque siting, evocative landscaping, asymmetrical architectural compositions, and often wonderful vernacular detail that reveals evidence of handmade work, including uneven floor boards, sloping ceilings, rough-hewn and textured surfaces of plaster, stone, rubble, and wood. In Rustic, Bret Morgan illuminates this much-loved style, giving us the definitive volume on the subject. Comprehensive in scope, Rustic features historically important houses from across America, some small-scale, some larger, from the sublime Ames Gates Lodge of 1881 in North Easton, Massachusetts, designed by H. H. Richardson, to the Arcadian masterpiece Ridge House of 2001, in Spokane, Washington, by Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen. A beautifully photographed and astutely written volume, Rustic is destined to become a much-cherished companion for those whose love of the woodlands is matched only by a love of home.

This book features Japanese inns, or ryokan, both old and new-from inns with a history dating back a thousand years to modern inns with the latest facilities that nonetheless capture the spirit of old Japan. Each of the properties has been handpicked by the authors for their strong design aesthetic, commitment to service and purity of their spring waters. The photographs showcase the resorts at their best, and accurately express the unique architectural design of each ryokan.
Each chapter begins by introducing the area surrounding the inns and their spas, or onsen, and provides a background of its local history, culture and traditions, as well as the natural environment. The text provides information on the design and development of each ryokan, and descriptions of the owners and their clientele. For those planning a visit to an onsen, this book provides contact details and information on the number of rooms, type of facilities and food, as well as vital information on travel and booking procedures and whether English is spoken. For those fascinated by Japanese culture and design, this book is an absolute delight.

Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) was one of the 20th century's great visionaries, both in the fields of furniture design (he created the ubiquitous Knoll "Tulip" chairs and tables, for example) and in architecture. Among his greatest accomplishments are monuments that shaped architecture in postwar America and became icons in themselves: Washington D.C.'s Dulles International Airport, the very sculptural and fluid TWA terminal at JFK Airport in New York, and the 630 ft (192m) high Gateway Arch of St. Louis, Missouri. Marrying curves and dynamic forms with a Modernist aesthetic, he brought a whole new dimension to architecture.

The building of religious structures represents a rare opportunity for the architect to concentrate on the creation of volume, space, and form. Sacred architecture is far less determined than other building tasks by functional requirements, norms, and standards. As a rule, it is free to unfold as pure architecture.

Thus in design terms this building task offers enormous freedoms to the architect. At the same time, however, the special atmospherics of sacred spaces call, on the part of the architect, for a highly sensitive treatment of religion and the relevant cultural and architectural traditions.

In a systematic section, this volume introduces the design, technical, and planning fundamentals of building churches, synagogues, and mosques. In its project section, it also presents about seventy realized structures from the last three decades. Drawing upon his in-depth knowledge of the subject and his many years of publishing experience, the author offers a valuable analysis of the conceptual and formal aspects that combine to create the religious impact of spaces (e.g., the ground plan, the shapes of the spaces, the incidence of light, and materiality).

In recent years, Saint-Tropez, a heavenly spot on the French Côte d’Azur, has evolved into one of the most sophisticated holiday destinations for the Jet set. Initially, under the impetus of the many celebrities and wealthy citizens who lived there during the summer months, many luxurious holiday homes were built in a Provencal or Italian-inspired style in Saint-Tropez. Lately, this has changed: under the influence of local architects but also of the cosmopolitan population of the port town a resolutely contemporary design, both sober and timeless, pure and modern was resolutely chosen.

The renowned interior designer Sandra Cerfontaine, the creator of Alessandra Home Interiors in Saint-Tropez, introduces us to the exciting world of contemporary design in her home town: exclusive, never-before photographed homes that bathe in a contemporary and timeless atmosphere. A unique source of inspiration for anyone wanting to settle on the Côte d’Azur. With an introduction by Daniel Hechter, the celebrated French couturier, who also guides us first through his own home in Saint-Tropez.
