Drawing on the work of artist and architect William Lim, this book offers a new, enlightened perspective on what Asian design means today. 

Exploring design works ranging from furniture and temporary art installations to interior design and architecture by CL3, founded by William Lim, and related studios Lim + Lu and Open UU, this book presents a fresh consideration of the essence of contemporary Asian design and how it has evolved over the past few decades.

Combining sustainability with trendsetting design is one of the great challenges of contemporary architecture. In addition to an increased awareness of the interdependence of human beings, their built environment and the eco system, coupled with the desire of maintaining a livable and intact world for future generations and the wish for a healthy residential environment, economic considerations have considerably gained in significance in recent years. The creation of resource saving residential buildings is, therefore, an important and exciting task today.

For Marcel Wolterinck – one of the Netherlands’ leading designers – indoors and outdoors are inextricably linked. This is most evident in his all-encompassing projects, in which his studio designs both the interior and exterior of a property as well as the garden. But even when redesigning existing gardens, Wolterinck is focused on ensuring that the outside is a natural extension of the inside. Besides the understated use of colour – predominantly green – Wolterinck’s garden designs are characterised by simplicity, balance and contrasts. Sightlines create depth and space, while garden rooms provide a sense of intimacy. Wolterinck typically draws inspiration from the architecture in the immediate vicinity of the house, and then increasingly allows the garden to blend with its natural surroundings towards the edges. In his latest book, Eden – Garden Designs, Wolterinck presents 21 of his garden-design projects, both in the Netherlands and abroad: from Laren to Crete and from Zwolle to Tel Aviv. Wolterinck shares insights into the thought process behind each design, including his decisions for plants and materials, as the sumptuous photos take you on a journey through his ‘gardens of Eden’.

Kate Hume's passion for interiors stems from her lifelong love affair with color and her respect for anything artisanal. Famously labeled the “father, poet, and prophet” of green architecture and a proponent of the idea that any project in architecture or design must present new or better ways of living or be deemed immoral, Emilio Ambasz is an award-winning architect, industrial designer, and protean maker of forms. He has invented highly efficient engines, modular furniture, streetlights, flexible pens, expandable suitcases, ergonomic door handles, wrist computers, and 3D posters. In collaboration with Giancarlo Piretti, he created the Vertebra chair, the first automatic ergonomic chair in the world, now part of the permanent collections at the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Long a pioneer in architecture, Ambasz has retained a belief in the environment, or rather the larger ecology, as fundamental in viewing the world: as the author notes in the introduction, “his philosophy of ‘green over gray’ may often have fallen on deaf ears at the height of Postmodernism, but it today seems profoundly relevant.” And it is in the context of today that the book considers his work and its three main areas of concentration—architecture, industrial design, curating—with an aim of shining a light on the interdisciplinary nature of the work as a whole.

Featuring built and manufactured designs that have achieved iconic fame and challenged others to approach new ways of reconciling architecture and nature, the book also considers Ambasz’s work as curator at MoMA and his ongoing influence and legacy.
