Longtime collaborators of Pierre Cardin, Jean-Pascal Hesse and Pierre Pelegry share their intimate knowledge of the fashion designer’s early career in Paris. They analyze the influences that inspired him to conceive not only some of the most iconic haute couture creations of the 1950s and 1960s, but also the space-ageinflected Cosmocorps collection, which presciently explored gender fluidity.

Pierre Cardin’s designs were worn by an international elite of beautiful women, from Jackie Kennedy to Lauren Bacall and Jeanne Moreau. A close friend of André Courrèges and Paco Rabanne, Cardin revolutionized modern fashion in the mid-1960s, creating iconic designs that continue to resonate today. His many talents and mastery of materials―from fabrics to plastics―extended from haute couture to ready-to-wear, menswear, jewelry, furniture design, perfumes, and accessories, while his business acumen led him to create an empire that stretched from China to the United States.

In this volume, long-time Cardin collaborator Jean- Pascal Hesse shares his intimate knowledge of the designer’s early career in Paris, and analyzes the creative influences and partnerships that inspired Cardin to design some of the most emblematic haute couture creations of the 1950s and 1960s, as well as the space-age-inflected Cosmocorps work, which presciently explored gender fluidity. Drawing from a broad range of sources that Hesse has been gathering for more than two decades, this work features personal recollections from Cardin himself, in addition to numerous previously unpublished photographs and documents recounting his early years in Christian Dior’s studio, his success in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s, and his profound interest in Japanese art and design.

About the Authors:

A historian and communications director for Pierre Cardin since the 1990s, Jean-Pascal Hesse is an expert on the designer’s work. Pierre Pelegry, director of Maxim’s and a close collaborator of the designer, contributed photographs by the Japanese photographer Yoshi Takata, who accompanied Pierre Cardin for over forty years.

About the Author:

Dave Cooper is a cartoonist, illustrator and graphic designer who lives in Ottawa, Ontario. First known for his comics, he has also worked extensively as a designer, producer, and creator in the field of animation: his designs have been used in Futurama, Nickelodeon's Pig Goat Banana Cricket, of which he was co-creator, and Teletoon's The Bagel and Becky Show, which he created. As of 2003, Cooper has focused on oil painting and fine art, exhibiting in galleries in New York, Los Angeles and Paris, where he has gathered a celebrity cult following that includes David Cross, David Cronenberg, and Guillermo del Toro. 

Plants are age-old symbols of vitality, health and wholesomeness. Plant Kingdom taps into the power of this symbolism by presenting iconic botanical forms as seen in the best contemporary design. The featured projects involve plant forms as used in branding campaigns, packaging, advertising, in-store displays and marketing collateral, to name but a few examples.

Plastic has shaped our daily lives like no other material. Originally associated with convenience, progress, even revolution, today plastic seems to have lost its utopian appeal. Plastic is everywhere, yet most conspicuous as waste and as a key factor in the global environmental crisis. This book examines the success story of plastic in the twentieth century and at the same time presents the different discourses on how we should manage the waste the material produces and also find solutions that take into account its entire life cycle in the future.

Mark Miodownik, Susan Freinkel, and Nanjala Nyabola each contribute an essay that sheds light on the history of plastics from 1850 to today. A material-rich visual chronology illustrates how consumers’ perception of plastics has changed over the decades. Brief descriptions of a selection of 50 objects examine the importance of plastics for material culture. Reprints of fundamental texts about the history of plastics ― for example by Alexander Parkes and Roland Barthes ― provide a context from the history of ideas.

The book reflects the current discourse and state of research on plastic with numerous individual interviews and panel discussions that were held with designers, representatives from industry, researchers, and environmental activists. Underpinning these conversations are comprehensive data visualizations on plastic production and consumption, recycling.
