With a career spanning over four decades, Roger Ballen is best known for his psychologically powerful and masterfully composed images that exist in a space between painting, drawing, installation and photography. The results are like prehistoric cave-paintings: the black, dimensionless spaces on the glass are canvases onto which Ballen carves his thoughts and emotions. Fossil-like facial forms and dismembered body parts co-exist uncomfortably with vaporous, ghost-like shadows - these images have the capacity to shock, inspire, amuse and even elate viewers.

The first sightings of newly discovered work from Saul Leiter’s abundant archive of colour slides

Now widely acclaimed as one of the world’s greatest photographers, Saul Leiter (1923–2013) remained relatively unsung until he was rediscovered by curators and critics in his early 80s, and his work has been drastically re-evaluated over the last two decades. Leiter’s images evoked the flow and rhythm of life on the mid-century streets of New York in luminous colour at a time when his contemporaries were shooting in black and white. On his death in 2013, he left behind a collection of more than 40,000 colour slides, only a fraction of which had seen the light of day. The retrospective on the work of couturier Thierry Mugler (1948-2022) at the Brooklyn Museum includes more than 150 costumes designed between 1977 and 2014, along with many unpublished archive documents and sketches. It showcases the multiple worlds of this one-of-a-kind artistic figure — a visionary fashion designer, director, photographer and perfumer — through a display of his prêt-à-porter and haute couture silhouettes.

Thierry Mugler staged the most spectacular fashion shows of his time. He dressed many celebrities, including Diana Ross, David Bowie, Lady Gaga, Liza Minnelli, Céline Dion and Kim Kardashian.
