Steve McCurry
ID: 9632
Видавництво: Phaidon

American photographer Steve McCurry (b.1950) is universally recognized as one of today’s finest image-makers and has won many of photography’s top awards. This monograph brings together the most memorable and beautiful of his images, taken around the world over the last 30 years. McCurry's ability to cross boundaries of language and culture to capture fleeting moments of human experience is unique. With his discerning eye for form and colour, shape and symmetry, he offers us windows into other worlds.

Seen at the large scale of this new book, McCurry's images are particularly powerful: reproduced at slightly larger than life-size, his portraits have an extraordinary immediacy and impact, while even the smallest details of his spectacular landscapes are clearly visible on the page.

Portraits of children, pilgrims and farmers are presented alongside views of ancient temples, busy city streets, dramatic mountain landscapes and quiet scenes of daily life – people are seen fishing, playing, working and praying.

The images are presented in an uninterrupted sequence for maximum impact, and all the photographs are shown at either full-page size or as double-page spreads.

The back of the book contains extended picture captions accompanied by colour thumbnail images for quick identification.

About the Photographer:

Steve McCurry (b.1950) launched his career as a photojournalist when disguised in native garb, he crossed the Pakistan border into Afghanistan over twenty years ago. His remarkable coverage won him the Robert Capa Gold Medal, which is awarded to photographers who exhibit exceptional courage and enterprise. Famous also for his work in Southeast Asia, McCurry’s photographs are beautiful, uplifting and affecting. McCurry is a regular contributor to many international journals including National Geographic magazine. He is a member of Magnum Photos.

Mark Hunter
ID: 14413
Видавництво: Rizzoli

A love letter to a time before Instagram and the legendary party scenes of the 2000s that brought together the new millennium’s rising stars of pop culture.

Under the moniker the Cobrasnake, the photographer Mark Hunter captured the party scenes of Los Angeles and New York during the hipster-glam heyday of the 2000s — and in doing so defined the look of a generation.  Armed with just a Polaroid and a primitive website, Cobrasnake captured pioneers of youth culture from Kanye West and Steve Aoki to Jeremy Scott, Katy Perry, and Virgil Abloh — icons of the indie pop world in the making. Intimately connected with the people around him and keyed-in to the edgier fringes of the fashion, music, and art worlds, Hunter photographed influencers before they were influencers, in the wild and at play from the streets of LA to NYC and beyond. Collected here for the first time are more than three hundred of Cobrasnake’s favorite images alongside ephemera, from concert tickets and backstage passes to outtakes and unseen photographs from his many adventures. These photographs are records of the last generation of partiers to predate the livestreaming of culture afforded by today’s social media — capturing the energy and vibrancy of a time before Instagram.

About the Author:

Mark Hunter is a photographer who under the moniker of the Cobrasnake chronicled the party scenes of Los Angeles and New York in the 2000s. His work has appeared everywhere from editorials in Rolling Stone and Harper’s Bazaar to advertising campaigns for Calvin Klein and Helmut Lang. He lives in Los Angeles.

Alex Webb
ID: 15201
Видавництво: Thames & Hudson

Gathering some of Alex Webb’s most iconic images, many of which were taken in the far corners of the earth, The Suffering of Light brings a fresh perspective to his extensive catalogue.

Recognized as a pioneer of American colour photography, Webb has since the 1970s consistently created photographs characterized by intense colour and light. His work, with its richly layered and complex composition, touches on multiple genres, including street photography, photojournalism and fine art, but as Webb claims, ‘to me it all is photography. You have to go out and explore the world with a camera.’ Webb’s ability to distil gesture, colour and contrasting cultural tensions into single, beguiling frames results in evocative images that convey a sense of enigma, irony and humour.

Featuring key works alongside previously unpublished photographs, The Suffering of Light is Webb’s first comprehensive monograph and provides the most thorough examination to date of this modern master’s prolific, thirty-year career.

About the Author:

Alex Webb’s photographs have appeared in a wide range of publications, including the NewYork Times Magazine, Life, Stern and National Geographic, and have been exhibited internationally. He is a recipient of the Leica Medal of Excellence (2000) and the Premio Internacional de Fotografia Alcobendas (2009), and has been a member of Magnum Photos since 1976.

Introduction by Tina Barney, Afterword by Peter Galassi
ID: 16045
Видавництво: Rizzoli

Covering three decades of the artist’s provocative yet intimate large-scale color images capturing the domestic life and private moments of the American and European elite — her family and friends — this book will appeal to contemporary-art lovers, photography book collectors, and anyone with an interest in modern culture.

Internationally acclaimed American artist Tina Barney burst on the scene in the early 1980s with her provocative yet intimate photographs capturing the domestic lives and social rituals of the elite. In choosing color over black and white and producing large-format prints, she broke the tradition of established fine-art photography at the time. Her unstintingly honest portrayal of her subjects, many of whom are family and friends, remains completely original.

Straddling the line between candid and choreographed photography, between engagement and detachment, she captures her subjects in a range of rarefied settings, both private and public. Her iconic tableaux suggest rich narratives or, as she has written, the “synchronization of psychological, emotional, and sociological plots that bind a family together.” Long awaited, this lavish survey is the most definitive book to date on Barney’s work.

About the Author:

Tina Barney began her career in the mid-1970s when she started photographing in color with a large-format view camera. Her iconic images are in the permanent collections of numerous institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, among others. Recent solo exhibitions include The Europeans at the Frist Center in Nashville, the Barbican Centre, London, and at the Museum of Art, Salzburg. Peter Galassi is a former chief curator of photography at the Museum of Modern Art, in New York.

Tomasz Gudzowaty
ID: 16628
Видавництво: Hatje Cantz

The Polish photographer and filmmaker Tomasz Gudzowaty is actually known for his perfection — clear compositions, precisely chosen image frames, carefully considered down to the last detail. However, the approach to his Sumo series is completely different. For his photographic tribute to the Japanese national sport Sumo, Gudzowaty confronts his subject with the rebellious aesthetic of “are-bure-bokeh”, which means rough, blurred, out of focus. This style developed in Japan in the 1960s as a countercurrent to the prevailing norm of photojournalism of the time. With the help of photography, Gudzowaty attempts to create a visual language that is able to capture documents beyond words. With the publication Sumo he presents a previously unknown side of his artistic work.

About the Autor:

Tomasz Gudzowaty (*1971) is a portrait and documentary photographer and filmmaker. His work has been published in many magazines and newspapers, such as National Geographic and Vogue Italia. He has received numerous awards.

Diane Arbus
ID: 12516
Видавництво: Aperture

Untitled is the third volume of Diane Arbus’s work and the only one devoted exclusively to a single project. The photographs were taken at residences for the mentally retarded between 1969 and 1971, in the last years of Arbus’s life. Although she considered doing a book on the subject, the vast majority of these pictures remained unpublished prior to this volume.

These photographs achieve a lyricism, an emotional purity that sets them apart from all her other accomplishments. “Finally what I’ve been searching for,” she wrote at the time. The product of her consistently unflinching regard for reality as she found it, the images in this book have less in common with the documentary than with the mythic.

Untitled may well be Arbus’s most transcendent, most romantic vision. It is a celebration of the singularity and connectedness of each and every one of us. For Diane Arbus, this is what making pictures was all about.

This is the first edition in which the image separations were created digitally; the files have been specially prepared by Robert J. Hennessey using prints by Neil Selkirk.

About the Author:

Diane Arbus (1923–1971) revolutionized the terms of the art she practised. Five volumes of her work have been published posthumously and have remained continuously in print: Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph (1972), Diane Arbus: Magazine Work (1984), Untitled: Diane Arbus (1995), Diane Arbus: A Chronology (2011), and Diane Arbus Revelations (Random House, 2003).

A key figure in twentieth-century photography, Willy Ronis conveyed the poetic reality of postwar Paris and Provence in iconic black-and-white photographs. Alan Cumming
ID: 16074
Видавництво: Rizzoli

A magical concoction of the mischievous, tender, whimsical, and debauched real-life adventures of Alan Cumming, told in his own words and pictures. Described by the New York Times as “a bawdy countercultural sprite” and named one of the most fun people in show business by Time magazine, Alan Cumming is a genuine quadruple threat — an internationally acclaimed, award-winning star of stage, television, and film, as well as a New York Times best-selling author whose real-life vivacity, wit, and charm shine through every page of his third book, You Gotta Get Bigger Dreams. In these forty-five picture essays, Cumming recounts his real-life adventures (and often, misadventures), illustrated by his own equally entertaining photographs. From an awkward bonding session with Elizabeth Taylor to poignant stories about his family and friends to some harsh words of wisdom imparted by Oprah that make up the title of this collection, You Gotta Get Bigger Dreams is as eclectic, enchanting, and alive as its author.

About the Author:

Alan Cumming is the author of two books: Tommy’s Tale: A Novel of Sex, Confusion, and Happy Endings and the #1 New York Times best-selling memoir Not My Father’s Son. He has also had an exhibition of his photographs, Alan Cumming Snaps! His day job is acting, and most recently he was seen on TV as Eli Gold in the CBS drama The Good Wife, on Broadway in his Tony Award–winning role as the Master of Ceremonies in Cabaret, and in concert, touring the world with his cabaret show, Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs, which was also released as a live album. Alan is also a loudmouth — sorry, activist — who believes that knowledge is power and equality is a right, not a privilege.

Kishin Shinoyama
ID: 16486
Видавництво: Rizzoli

In commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Yukio Mishima, one of the leading figures in modern literature, The Death of a Man presents a sublime -- and often shocking -- visual record of the last few months prior to his sensational ritual suicide in November 1970.

The author of masterworks such as The Temple of the Golden Pavilion and Forbidden Colors, Mishima, a celebrated figure in postwar world literature, remains a controversial figure in Japan. His reactionary politics and the spectacular nature of his death had so profoundly impacted Japanese society that images associated with the event were never publicly shown.

In the months prior to the November incident, he enlisted Kishin Shinoyama to create a photographic, radical work of fiction, a photo essay on the death of the Japanese "everyman." In images often suffused with militarism and eroticism, a parade of men, including a sailor, a construction worker, a fisherman, and a soldier, are shown meeting grisly, dramatic ends.

Published for the very first time, these stylized images of men dying alone serve as prologues to the real-world culmination of Mishima's pursuit of total art. Locked in a performance with one inescapable end, Mishima offered his own body as its final act.

With texts by Mishima and his closest intimates and first-person reminiscences of his final moments, this book promises to be an unprecedented interrogation on the nature of performance and the role of artist as actor, provocateur, and revolutionary.

About the Author:

Kishin Shinoyama is one of the titans of Japanese postwar photography. In 2018 Louis Vuitton reprinted his landmark 1981 work on the Silk Road.

Oleg Dou
ID: 10021
Видавництво: Artguide

People understand the artwork of Oleg Dou in different ways. The decadent beauty of his seemingly bloodless creatures and their psychopathic gaze are strangely evocative of the cliched images of fashion photography. But the dedication and diligence with which he creates his images of young people, woven of snow and ice, entice us to seek a living face underneath the thick layer of makeup. Oleg Dou has chosen a very difficult path, dismembering beauty with the surgical scalpel of a pathologist, dissecting a rictus grin until it becomes a paroxysm of suffering

Jessica Lange

Видавництво: PowerHouse Books

“I find photography a most mysterious process - capturing that moment in time and space, elusive and fleeting, and crystallizing it. You have made a photograph. It is its own thing now. To me, that is thrilling.”
—Jessica Lange

Actress Jessica Lange’s career spans more than 30 years and 30 films; the winner of two Academy awards, the one-time waitress is one of the most acclaimed performers of both the screen and the stage, as well as one of the most recognizable faces. 50 Photographs, however, finds Lange on the other side of the camera.

Originally drawn to the medium simply as a way to document the lives and growth of her children, Lange has now been photographing on and off for 15 years, approaching the art as an antidote to the constant fervor of Hollywood. “It is a way of working,” she says of her process, “that is the opposite of acting. Photography doesn’t depend on collaboration; it can be solitary and private.” A 2007 feature in Aperture, introduced by Mary Ellen Mark, gave the world its first taste of Lange’s visual work; now, 50 Photographs gathers her impressive portfolio, featuring images from Mexico, Africa, Romania, Russia, Finland, Italy, and France as well as the U.S., into her first-ever photography monograph. Alternately comforting and disquieting, Lange’s striking black-and-whites possess a kind of moody mystery that is appropriately cinematic.

Robin Muir
ID: 3915
Видавництво: Thames & Hudson

John Deakin’s documentary photographs are haunting evocations of life on the streets of London, Paris and Rome in the 1950s and 1960s, yet he is the only person ever to have been hired and fired twice by the same editor at Vogue

His chief focus is on ordinary life. His pictures of people from dog walkers to nuns reveal an empathy to rival that of Doisneau and Brassaï. Equally intriguing are his depictions of life with the participants gone: a vanished vernacular of chalked-up children’s games, of graffitied messages of love or anger, street signs, peeling walls and shop-front banners – signals from another age.

Here is a far broader range of photography than that on which Deakin’s reputation rested in his lifetime. But the creative souls and maverick talents that frequented the streets of Soho in its heyday – Francis Bacon, and Lucian Freud among them – make their appearance along with anonymous figures and faces from Paris and Rome.

Both friends and stars appear in Robin Muir’s introduction, which describes both Deakin the man and Deakin the artist. Though a legendary drinking companion in artistic circles, he was not universally popular, yet he was admired by his circle and greatly respected for his originality.

After his death in 1972 Deakin's work lay neglected for a number of years and his reputation dwindled. This book restores him to his proper place as one of the great photographers of the postwar period.
