These behind-the-scenes, intimate, and unguarded shots have been unearthed after spending 45 years in a duffel bag of The Beatles and Rolling Stones' former tour manager, Bob Bonis. Bonis was the US tour manager for The Beatles' first tour in the States from 1964-1966. Hanging out on stage, backstage, at work, and at play with one of the most influential bands ever, Bonis took some 3,500 photographs at a critical point in the creative development of The Beatles. The photos show these legends in candid, intimate shots on stage, in rehearsal, in concert, backstage (tuning up, waiting to go on stage and clowning around), dressing and relaxing, on vacations or en route to shows or cities, getting haircuts, bowling, recording in the studio, at press events, and just hanging around being themselves. This collection captured a pivotal time in the bands' career. It offers a groundbreaking, amazingly candid look at some of the 20th century's biggest icons during their first moments on the world stage.

Larry Marion’s The Lost Rolling Stones Photographs is a milestone for rock and roll collecting: the largest trove of never-before-seen rock photographs ever uncovered reveals the Rolling Stones on their earliest American tours in the 1960s. Selected from a rediscovered cache of intimate, behind-the-scenes snapshots taken by Bob Bonis — the US tour manager behind the Stones, the Beatles and other British Invasion breakthroughs — The Lost Rolling Stones Photographs reveals the casual, human side of a young Mick Jagger and Keith Richards when they were merely “England’s Newest Hit Makers.” Presented by Larry Marion, owner of New York’s Not Fade Away Gallery and curator of the acclaimed exhibit “The British Are Coming: The Beatles and The Rolling Stones 1964-66,” this one-of-a-kind book gives a priceless window into the off-stage personalities of America’s first bad boy rock band.

  • The ideal present for art lovers! Nudity, sensuality and sexuality in the Louvre paintings translated into a fantastic and surprising photographic concept
  • The alluring design of the book stems from the wish to create a box suggestive of some artistic secret; covered in black silk, with a ribbon recalling lingerie, it reveals on opening a silky burgundy interior, reminiscent of a boudoir, in which the book is softly resting
  • Volume 1 of the Le Louvre Nu/The Louvre Nude series, dealing with the naked body in paintings
  • This book won the Golden Pixel Award, the prestigious Austrian award for groundbreaking print products, in the category coffee-table books

The idea for this book was born in the course of a visit through the Louvre, when Catherine Belanger ventured to call the Louvre 'the biggest brothel in the world'. Jointly with author Jean Galard and photographer Lois Lammerhuber, she selected key paintings spanning five centuries to illustrate the fascinating art of depicting nudity and the artists' struggle for acceptance of the nude in art and society. Lois Lammerhuber detaches the nudity, sensuality and sexuality of the paintings from the context of their artistic intention, conceiving them as 'material' in a fictional photography studio and recreating them in his photographs. He resorts to these 'models' to translate them into the language of fashion, nude and advertising photography, reading their body language and interaction in a way reminiscent of artists like Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton, Horst P. Horst or Herb Ritts - sensual and unexpected.

  • One of the best and most important collections of sculpture in the biggest and most famous museum in the world, an exceptional photographic interpretation in 162 sensational pictures, a tribute to sensuality in art
  • The ideal gift book for art lovers, a sophisticated and surprising approach to nudity and sensuality in major sculptures of the Louvre
  • The sophisticated design of the book, reminiscent of bronze and referring to the haptic character of sculpture, makes the book itself a sculptural work of art
  • Volume 2 of the Le Louvre Nu/The Louvre Nude series, dedicated to the naked body in sculpture

The idea for this book was born in the course of a stroll through the Louvre, when Catherine Belanger ventured to call the Louvre 'the biggest brothel in the world'. Key works illustrate the artistic approach and the representation of the nude in the Western world from the 7th century BC to 1897.

Lois Lammerhuber detaches the nudity, sensuality and sexuality of the sculptures from the context of their artistic intention, conceiving them as 'material' in a fictional photography studio and recreating them in his photographs. He resorts to these 'models' to translate them into the language of fashion, nude and advertising photography - sensual and unexpected. The images are accompanied by Jean Galard's reflections on this approach from an art-historical and philosophical angle. In its design the book is reminiscent of bronze and refers to the haptic character of sculpture.

Martin Luther's Bible, first printed in 1534, was not only the first complete German publication of the Bible but also a major event in the history of Christianity. Luther's revolutionary translation, very modern in vernacular and interpretation, made the Bible accessible to laypeople for the first time in history and gave life to a new religion: Protestantism. The Luther Bible remains the most widely used version in the Germanic world today. In commemoration of Year of the Bible (2003), TASCHEN is publishing a sumptuous reprint of this seminal book. Including both the Old and New Testaments, separated into two volumes totaling over 1800 pages, TASCHEN's complete Luther Bible has been meticulously reproduced from a rare colored copy of the original. Careful attention has been paid to woodcuts and elaborate ornaments from the workshop of Lucas Cranach, which are printed in color and gold so as to be perfectly faithful to the original. Contained in a third volume is Stephan Füssel's introduction, providing an overview of Luther's life, a discussion of the significance of his bible, and detailed descriptions of the illustrations.

Art of Enchantment. The world’s greatest magicians from the Middle Ages to the 1950s

Take a truly magical mystery tour with this sparkling compendium of magic and trickery from medieval thaumaturgies to 20th-century showmen. Featuring hundreds of rarely seen vintage posters, photographs, handbills, and engravings, The Magic Book follows this special performing art from the 1400s to the 1950s.

Magic has enchanted humankind for millennia, evoking terror, laughter, shock, and amazement. Once persecuted as heretics and sorcerers, magicians have always been conduits to a parallel universe of limitless possibility — whether invoking spirits, reading minds, or inverting the laws of nature by sleight of hand. Long before science fiction, virtual realities, video games, and the Internet, the craft of magic was the most powerful fantasy world man had ever known. As the pioneers of special effects throughout history, magicians have never ceased to mystify us by making the impossible possible.

This book celebrates more than 500 years of the stunning visual culture of the world’s greatest magicians. Featuring more than 750 rarely seen vintage posters, photographs, handbills, and engravings as well as paintings by Hieronymus Bosch and Bruegel among others, The Magic Book traces the history of magic as a performing art from the 1400s to the 1950s. Combining sensational images with incisive text, the book explores the evolution of the magicians’ craft, from medieval street performers to the brilliant stage magicians who gave rise to cinematic special effects; from the 19th century’s golden age of magic to groundbreaking daredevils like Houdini and the early 20th century’s vaudevillians.

"A woman once rang me up and said, 'Mr. Escher, I am absolutely crazy about your work. In your print Reptiles, you have given such a striking illustration of reincarnation.' I replied, ‘Madame, if that`s the way you see it, so be it.`" An engagingly sly comment by the renowned Dutch graphic artist Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898–1972) - the complex ambiguities of whose work leave hasty or single-minded interpretations far behind. Long before the first computer-generated 3-D images were thrilling the public, Escher was a master of the third dimension. His lithograph "Magic Mirror" dates as far back as 1946. In taking that title for this book, mathematician Bruno Ernst is stressing the magic spell Escher`s work invariably casts on those who see it. Ernst visited Escher every week for a year, systematically talking through his entire œuvre with him. Their discussions resulted in a friendship that gave Ernst intimate access to the life and conceptual world of Escher. Ernst`s account was meticulously scrutinized and made accurate by the artist himself.

Escher`s work refuses to be pigeonholed. Scientific, psychological, or aesthetic criteria alone cannot do it justice. The questions remain. Why did he create the pictures? How did he construct them? What preliminary studies were necessary before he could arrive at the final version? And how are the various images Escher created interrelated? This book, complete with biographical data, 250 illustrations, and explications of mathematical problems, offers answers to these and many other questions and is an authentic source text of the first order.

Impossible Illusions. The enigmatic works of M.C. Escher

Long before the first computer-generated 3-D images, M.C. Escher was a master of the third dimension. His impossible geometry and illusions, bordering between the scientific and psychological, are a homage to the possibilities of the human mind. This collection presents the artist’s key graphic works and illustrations in stunning full-page reproductions, complete with detailed explanations of each mathematical problem.

“A woman once rang me up and said, ‘Mr. Escher, I am absolutely crazy about your work. Introduction by J. L. Locher
ID: 370
Видавництво: Thames & Hudson

No artist ever worked harder to render the visions of his mind’s eye than M.C. Escher. A superb draughtsman, he set himself the challenge of portraying other-worldly transformations of space within the familiar boundaries set by a sheet of paper. The resulting images have become the favourite artworks of hundreds of thousands of people around the world.

This powerfully original artist has long deserved a book that does justice to his visual invention: this is it. Escher’s works are arranged to form a cinematic journey of discovery, brilliantly interweaving his better-known prints with numerous unpublished working drawings and sketches (including 12 full-colour fold-outs), the artist’s eloquent words, and observations by Escher expert J.L. Locher.

As beautiful and rigorous as an Escher work itself, The Magic of M.C. Escher is destined to become the classic study of a great maverick who so memorably linked the world of image-making with geometry and paradox.

246 color ills.

There seems to be an endless number of deceptively real objects depicted in still lifes: dewdrops on fragile flower petals, reflections of light on glass goblets and precious silver dishes, candied sweets in Chinese porcelain, the fine hairs on a peach, the soft feathers of a songbird, the sallow tinge to a skull. However, the details of this genre are not exhausted in the delicate rendering of varying surfaces, because each pictorial element can also symbolize religious or moral content or be a reference to the irretrievability of time gone by - tempus fugit! This volume presents, on large-format plates, a splendid selection of works by some of the principal masters of the still-life genre, such as Jan Brueghel the Elder, Georg Flegel, Sebastian Stoskopff, Jan Davidsz de Heem, Abraham Mignon, and Jean Siméon Chardin. These choice treasures of German, Netherlandish, Flemish, and French still-life painting exemplify nearly all of the different ways of playing with this genre.

An Era of the Invincible. The making of household heroes and mythological universes

Welcome to the Marvel Age of Comics, a triumphant era of comic and pop culture innovation which redefined the superhero genre. This behind-the-scenes treasure trove of images and exclusive insights reveals the making of such household characters as the Hulk and Spider-Man as well as the legendary architects who brought them to life, from Stan “The Man” Lee to Jack “King” Kirby.

It was an age of mighty heroes, misunderstood monsters, and complex villains. With the publication of Fantastic Four No. 1 in November 1961, comics giant Marvel inaugurated a transformative era in pop culture. Through the next two decades, the iconic Hulk, Spider-Man, Iron Man, and the X-Men leapt, darted, and towered through its pages. Captain America was resurrected from his 1940s deep-freeze and the Avengers became the World’s Greatest Super Heroes. Daredevil, Doctor Strange, and dozens more were added to the pantheon, each with their own rogues’ gallery of malevolent counterparts. Nearly 60 years later, these thrilling characters from the 1960s and ’70s are more popular than ever, fighting the good fight in comics, toy aisles, and blockbuster movies around the world.

In The Marvel Age of Comics 1961–1978, legendary writer and editor Roy Thomas takes you to the heart of this seminal segment in comic history — an age of triumphant character and narrative innovation that reinvented the superhero genre. With more than 500 images and insider insights, the book traces the birth of champions who were both epic in their powers and grounded in a world that readers recognized as close to their own; relatable heroes with the same problems, struggles, and shortcomings as everyone else. By the ’70s, we see how the House of Ideas also elevated horror, sword and sorcery, and martial arts in its stable of titanic demigods, introducing iconic characters like Man-Thing, Conan, and Shang-Chi and proving that their brand of storytelling could succeed and flourish outside of the capes and tights.

Behind it all, we get to know the extraordinary Marvel architects whose names are almost as familiar as the mortals (and immortals!) they brought to life—Stan “The Man” Lee, Jack “King” Kirby, and Steve Ditko, along with a roster of greats like John Romita, John Buscema, Marie Severin, Jim Steranko, and countless others. The result is a behind-the-scenes treasure trove and a jewel for any comic fan’s library, brimming with the innovation and energy of an invincible era for Marvel and its heroes alike.
