Pedro Almodóvar is a master of contemporary cinema. An auteur with an infinite imagination, the creator of unforgettable characters, and promoter of a challenging and captivating cinema, his list of accolades is virtually unmatched.

Almodóvar came to prominence during La Movida Madrileña, a cultural renaissance that followed after the end of Francoist Spain. His first few films characterized the sense of sexual and political freedom of the period. In 1986, he established his own film production company, El Deseo, with his younger brother Agustín Almodóvar, who has been responsible for producing all of his films since Law of Desire. Almodóvar achieved international recognition for his black comedy-drama film Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and went on to further success with the dark romantic comedy Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, the melodrama High Heels and the thriller Live Flesh. His subsequent two films, All About My Mother and Talk to Her, each earned him an Academy Award, for Best Foreign Film and Best Original Screenplay respectively. His subsequent films Volver, The Skin I Live In, Julieta and Pain and Glory were all in contention for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. His most recent film, The Room Next Door, won the Golden Lion at the 2024 Venice film festival.

About the Authors:

Pau Gómez has a degree in Journalism and a PhD in Film. He has spent most of his career at Ràdio 9, where he directed and presented specialized cinema programmes. He is the author of ten books on film.

Alphonse Mucha was an extraordinarily prolific and versatile artist who made his mark in the diverse fields of design – including posters, jewellery, interior decoration, theatre, packaging and product designs – as well as in painting, book illustration, sculpture and photography.

He is one of the best-known Czech artists to wide international audiences today and rose to international fame in fin-de- siècle Paris with his elegant designs for theatre posters for Sarah Bernhardt, the most famous French actress of the time, and decorative panels ( panneaux décoratifs ) featuring gracefully posed women. For those posters Mucha created a distinctive style – “le style Mucha” – characterised by harmonious compositions, sinuous forms, organic lines and a muted palette, which became synonymous with the newly emerging decorative style of the time – Art Nouveau. By the time of the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900, Mucha had become a leading figure in this decorative art movement, who defined the look of the era.

The catalogue explores the development of Mucha’s career and overall achievements as a multifaceted and visionary artist. It is divided into six sections, highlighting Mucha’s personality as Bohemian; picture maker for people; cosmopolitan; mystic; patriot and philosopher.

About the Author:

Tomoko Sato studied History of Art and Architecture at the University of Reading, and Museology at the University of Manchester. Formerly Curator at the Barbican Art Gallery in London, she has been Curator of the Mucha Foundation since 2007. She has curated numerous exhibitions on Alphonse Mucha as well as on modern art, design, and photography.

Mary Ellen Miller is an American art historian and Dean of Yale College. In 2008, she was appointed as Sterling Professor at Yale. She has served as the Chair of the History of Art, Latin American Studies, and Archaeological Studies Departments at Yale, as well as Director of Undergraduate Studies of the History of Art. She has written many articles on Mesoamerican art, and her book with Linda Schele, The Blood of Kings, is considered a landmark in Maya studies. She is also the author, with Karl Taube, of The Gods and Symbols of Ancient Mexico and the Maya.

Karl Taube is an American Mesoamericanist, archaeologist, epigrapher and ethnohistorian, known for his publications and research into the pre-Columbian cultures of Mesoamerica and the American Southwest.

Anders Zorn (1860–1920) is one of Sweden’s most accomplished and beloved artists. Renowned for his light, expressive watercolors, he attained mastery of the genre at an early age and later applied his techniques to oil painting. Zorn is often compared with the artists John Singer Sargent and Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida, contemporaries who also were known for their portraits of high-society figures. Taking up residence in London and then in Paris, Zorn established himself as an international portrait painter, depicting fashionable clients in a style both elegant and relaxed. He became a favorite among wealthy American collectors, bankers, and industrialists who sat for him, including art collector Isabella Stewart Gardner and three U.S. presidents. Although perhaps best known for his portraits, Zorn brought equal skill to painting genre scenes and views of nature. This handsome volume provides a thorough introduction to the artist and his works, from portraiture to landscapes and his famous nudes. Four illustrated essays are accompanied by a chronology, selected bibliography, an exhibition checklist, and an index.

Johan Cederlund is director of the Zorn Museum in Mora, Sweden. Hans Henrik Brummer was director of the Zorn Museum from 1972 to 1989. He also served as a professor at UCLA and as director general for the National Museum of Fine Arts, Stockholm. Per Hedström is deputy director of collections at the National Museum of Fine Arts, Stockholm. James A. Ganz is curator of the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
