Personally compiled and curated by Yoko Ono, Imagine John Yoko is the definitive inside story – told in revelatory detail – of the making of the legendary album and all that surrounded it: the locations, the creative team, the artworks and the films, in the words of John & Yoko and the people who were there.

In 1971, John Lennon & Yoko Ono conceived and recorded the critically acclaimed album Imagine at their Georgian country home, Tittenhurst Park, in Berkshire, England, in the state-of-the-art studio they built in the grounds, and at the Record Plant in New York. The lyrics of the title track were inspired by Yoko Ono’s ‘event scores’ in her 1964 book Grapefruit, and she was officially co-credited as writer in June 2017.

Imagine John Yoko tells the story of John & Yoko’s life, work and relationship during this intensely creative period, featuring 80% exclusive, hitherto-unpublished archive photos and footage sequences of all the key players in situ, together with lyric sheets, Yoko’s art installations, and exclusive new insights and personal testimonies from Yoko and over 40 of the musicians, engineers, staff, celebrities, artists and photographers who were there – including Julian Lennon, Klaus Voormann, Alan White, Jim Keltner, David Bailey, Dick Cavett and Sir Michael Parkinson. It transports readers to home and working environments showcasing Yoko’s closely guarded archive of photos and artefacts, using artfully compiled narrative film stills, and featuring digitally rendered maps, floorplans and panoramas that recreate the interiors in evocative detail. John & Yoko introduce each chapter and song; Yoko also provides invaluable additional commentary and a preface.

All the minutiae is examined: the locations, the key players, the music and lyrics, the production techniques and the artworks – including the creative process behind the double exposure polaroids used on the album cover.

About the Authors:

John Lennon (1940–1980) was an English singer, songwriter and peace activist who co-founded the Beatles, the most commercially successful band in the history of popular music.

Yoko Ono is a globally renowned multimedia artist, singer, songwriter and activist. She married John Lennon in 1969 and became his creative partner and muse. She continues to work to preserve his legacy, funding, among other projects, Strawberry Fields in Manhattan’s Central Park, the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER in Iceland and the ‘Imagine There’s No Hunger’ campaign.

As the opposition between illusion and reality dissolves and the boundaries between the world we inhabit and its virtual dimensions blur, Immerse! examines how computer-generated public spaces shape our current political and social discourses. What is the potential of virtual reality within the art field, when concepts such as presence and absence, material and immaterial are beginning to lose their validity?

Realized as part of the international research project Beyond Matter that explores the shift in the production and mediation of visual art within institutional frameworks. Francis Bacon famously found inspiration in photographs, film-stills and mass-media imagery. Historic India, which now encompasses the modern nations of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, is celebrated for the richness of its architectural and decorative arts, but less well-known for glazed tiles. Arthur Millner opens up this hitherto neglected subject with a richly illustrated narrative. Millner traces the craft’s roots in Muslim Persia, Afghanistan and Central Asia, showing how imported glazing techniques combined with an ancient local tradition of clay craftsmanship. He explores the production, designs and influences in Indian tiles from antiquity to the colonial period, tracing the historical evolution through a series of key eras, including the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Empire in Northern India. Although glazed tiles are generally associated with Islam, they also briefly flourished in both Hindu strongholds, such as Gwalior and Orchha, and in Christian Portuguese-ruled Goa. More than four hundred photographs, many of little-known sites, are drawn from the author’s years of travel as well as from colleagues, the V&A Museum archives and other celebrated institutions. Arthur Millner is a consultant and independent scholar in the field of Indian and Islamic art. He lectures at the London School of Oriental and African Studies, the V&A Museum, the Royal Asiatic Society and the Oriental Rug and Textile Society. He is the author of Damascus Tiles (Prestel, 2015).

This is the first international monograph on the French artist Inès Longevial.

Inès Longevial is a French painter based in Paris. She started drawing and painting at a very young age, first showing her work on Instagram, where she had an immediate success in terms of visibility. Since then her career has been growing fast, thanks to the support of the Parisian gallery Ketabi-Bourdet and to solo shows in Paris and New York.

Her oil paintings and drawings focus on two main themes: femininity and nature. Bodies, faces, and skin are shaped by light and color, and different palettes reflect different emotions—sometimes soft and sensual, sometimes intense, strong, and violent. The artist approaches her memories in color and gives form to candid and absorbed faces that embody the nostalgia of seasons, sunsets, shades of light, and caresses.

Originally from the southwest of France but with family in the Basque Country, she’s been close to Spanish culture; Pedro Almodóvar’s colorful world and Pablo Picasso’s lines rank among her main influences. Through large oil portraits on linen canvas and on paper, the artist follows an intimate injunction: “to make the face speak.” Her face—her faces—have always taken on the appearance of a landscape, sculpted by infinite shades of gleam, carved by valleys, traversed by shadows.

The book presents a significant selection of paintings and drawings, and includes pages of her sketchbook, a kind of intimate diary showing her inspiration and her spontaneous approach to painting. It is the first monographic publication on a promising young talent, with great potential.

She is the curator of 7 Gardens, a public art exhibition throughout the community gardens in the Lower East Side. Elise Roche is a French curator and contemporary art consultant. Since 2019, she has been the director of projects at Hervé Mikaeloff Agency where she specializes in projects dedicated to emerging creation. She has participated in the curation of various exhibitions such as "L'écume des songes” for Paris Art Fair; “Miss Dior,” a Dior heritage exhibition; and exhibitions for the Noor Festival in Riyadh. She also writes for magazines and galleries.
Line Papin is a French novelist, born in Vietnam and living in Paris. She published her first novel at the age of 21 and has published two successful novels since then.

Reconstructing an omitted chapter of art history. The Untold History of Immersive Art

At the intersection of art, architecture and design, environments create and transform space into an immersive experience, inviting the audience to engage and interact. So far, art history has been focused on the works of male artists mostly from the US and Europe. Inside Other Spaces: Environments by Women Artists 1956–1976 aims to signpost a different narrative by highlighting women’s fundamental contributions to this field. Redefining the canon, the exhibition features 11 pioneering women artists from three generations, spanning Asia, Europe, and the Americas, including Judy Chicago, Aleksandra Kasuba, and Lygia Clark. Given the experimental nature of such environments, many of these original works were deconstructed or destroyed. The detailed reconstructions, which are carried out with the help of restorers and based on archival photographs, construction plans, and material lists, are presented here for the first time. Conceived as a reference book for the historiography of environments, the publication comprises a wealth of visual material also on artists not featured in the show, such as Yayoi Kusama and Yoko Ono, providing leading scholars’ essays and extensive bibliographies on environments and individual artists.
