Renowned for its ceramic industry, Denmark earned its status as a leading porcelain exporter through intense rivalry with other firms across Europe. With its factories excelling time and time again at the largest international expositions of the 19th and early 20th century, Danish porcelain took its own place on the world stage.

Founded in 1775, Royal Copenhagen remains one the oldest porcelain manufacturers still in operation today. Throughout its history, the factory has experienced numerous highs and lows, and has weathered more than 130 years of competition from the Bing & Grøndahl Porcelain Factory. After 1882, the two factories were located less than a mile apart, with their flagship stores eventually competing side-by-side for sales in the heart of Copenhagen.

Danish Porcelain was inspired by a two-generation collection of Royal Copenhagen and Bing & Grøndahl porcelain, stoneware and faience begun by the author’s father in 1947. David Bowie's career as a pioneering artist spanned nearly 50 years and brought him international acclaim. He continues to be cited as a major influence on contemporary artists and designers working across the creative arts. David Driskell (1931-2020) was one of the most revered and boundary-breaking American artists, long recognized for his vibrant and versatile painting and printmaking practice, which combined his sharp observation of American landscapes and his interest in the imagery and aesthetic innovations of the African diaspora. Driskell was equally well-known as a curator, art historian, and educator, and his career as both artist and scholar created a durable public record of the long history of art made by African Americans.
The exhibition and accompanying catalogue survey seven decades of the artist's painterly practice from the 1950s forward. Driskell's command of color and line is showcased through his beloved subjects, including the natural world, remembrances of the Southern Black experience, and the Black Christian church.

The book includes a primary essay by Driskell scholar and curator Julie McGee as well as many other testaments to Driskell by major American artists, art historians, and museum professionals. David Reed documents the artist’s 2020 exhibition of new work at Gagosian in New York, presenting 15 outsize paintings that, in many cases, were over a decade in the making. The plates are punctuated by striking details of several works. The artist’s “working drawings,” which he has long made to document the many stages of a painting’s creation, are illustrated throughout the plate section, offering insights into his varied sources and complex processes.

Richard Shiff is the Effie Marie Cain Regents Chair in Art at the University of Texas at Austin, where he directs the Center for the Study of Modernism.

About the Authors:

Vern G. Swanson was born in Central Point, Oregon, and studied at Brigham Young University and the University of Utah. He received his doctorate at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London. Swanson has been researching, authenticating and cataloguing British and Continental classical and academic paintings since 1973. He was Museum Director of Springville Museum of Art, Springville, Utah for thirty-two years until his retirement in 2012. His authored publications include J.W. Godward: The Eclipse of Classicism, as well as two major books on Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, six books on Russian and Soviet art, and five books on Utah painting and sculpture.

Angela Swanson Jones, daughter of Vern Swanson, grew up in an art museum and followed her father throughout the world visiting libraries, galleries and auction houses. Also a graduate of the Courtauld Institute of Art (master's degree), she is now the Director of Swanson-Jones Fine Art Consulting and an avid collector and writer in her own right. Her topics of research include Newlyn School Painting and Nineteenth and Twentieth-Century Religious Art. She is currently writing a biography and catalogue raisonné on the German painter, Heinrich Hofmann (1824-1911). She has published essays and articles with Fine Art Connoisseur, among others.
