A new selection of letters, statements and interviews reveal the preoccupations, thoughts and ideas of Francis Bacon, one of the 20th century’s most influential and important artists.

The documents selected for Francis Bacon: A Self-Portrait in Words illustrate Bacon’s sharp wit and ability to express complex ideas in highly personal, memorable language. Bacon frequently came up with memorable epithets and definitions. He delighted in doing with words what he set out to do in painting: 'I like phrases that cut me.' About the Author:

Michael Peppiatt is a well-known writer and curator, who began his career as an art critic in London and Paris in the 1960s. Described by The Art Newspaper as ‘the best art writer of his generation’, his previous books include Francis Bacon: Anatomy of an Enigma and Francis Bacon: Studies for a Portrait. He was guest curator of the Royal Academy of Arts’ exhibition ‘Francis Bacon: Man and Beast’ (London, 2022).

Roxana Velásquez is the director of the San Diego Museum of Art and previously served as director of the Palace of Fine Arts (2007–2010), the National Art Museum (2004–2007), and the San Carlos National Museum (1997–2004) in Mexico. On the Baroque painter's early years in Rome and the origins of his vision of landscape painting

The impetus behind this volume was the Italian state's 2020 acquisition of the painting Landscape with a Country Dance (1601-02) by the Italian Baroque painter Guido Reni (1575-1642). The artwork's return to its native land at the Galleria Borghese marked a prime opportunity to rediscover the artist and his oeuvre, particularly the landscapes and rural scenes he created during his early years in Rome.
