Peter Doig, Text by Richard Shiff and Catherine Lampert
ID: 16024
Видавництво: Rizzoli

The most comprehensive monograph on Turner Prize-nominated artist Peter Doig.  In every generation of artists, there are a few-or perhaps just one-who propose a new set of questions and alter the way we understand art. Peter Doig is such an artist. While stories of painting’s demise in the early 1990s deemed painters and their work quaintly anachronistic, Doig-looking ahead as much as back for inspiration-forged a new painterly language: an ironic mix of Romanticism and post-impressionism to create haunting and sometimes dreamlike landscape vistas.

In this lavish new volume devoted to his entire career-which includes paintings, drawings, and reference material, such as found photographs-art historians Richard Shiff and Catherine Lampert mine the artist’s rich and varied work. Doig’s landscapes have been inspired by the many places the artist has lived-England, Canada, Trinidad. So, too, does memory, or the idea of memory, inform much of his production.

This volume is designed in close collaboration with the artist, with Doig specially creating the cover and various elements of the interior. Every facet of the painter’s singular vision is explored, from his earliest paintings of the early 1990s to the most recent series of works.

Published in association with Michael Werner Gallery

ID: 16652
Видавництво: Hatje Cantz

Coupling defeat and despair with rebellious humor, Danish artist Peter Linde Busk explores the grotesque conditions of human existence. Populating his works with tragic and awkward figures like fallen heroes, jesters, or outlaws in abstract spaces of detailed ornamentation, his figurations are  meticulously composed using a great variety of textures and techniques, and often incorporate random material relics from previous works. Similarly, his titles are wry quotes or poetic fragments: it is from Rilke that Peter Linde Busk has borrowed the title of the book, Who speaks of victory? To endure is all.

This richly illustrated monograph features a major essay by art historian Maria Fabricius Hansen juxtaposing Linde Busk’s work with medieval mosaics and the grotesques of Renaissance art. A catalogue raisonné of works from 2015 to 2022 is supplemented by short prose texts and a playlist by writer Minna Grooss that suggests a sound track to the materially emphatic works by Linde Busk.

About the Author:

Peter Linde Busk (*1973, Copenhagen) is one of the most renowned Danish artists of his generation. Educated in London, New York and Düsseldorf and working in multiple media such as painting, sculpture, relief, and mosaic, a central theme of his work is seeing the beauty and value in what is normally considered failed. This is evident both in his motifs and in his choice of materials such as discarded matter or studio debris. Linde Busk lives and works in Berlin.

ID: 15802
Видавництво: Rizzoli

The first definitive career retrospective of the visionary underground godfather of street art at the center of New York’s 1980s urban art scene.

Richard Hambleton (1954–2017) was a Canadian artist known for his pioneering street art. He was a surviving member of a group that emerged from the New York City art scene during the booming art market of the 1980s, which also included his close friends Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

As a conceptual artist, Hambleton’s early work installations titled “Image Mass Murder” from 1976–1979 were secretly placed onto streets in over 15 cities, depicting chalk-body outlines and blood-splattered crime scenes of what appeared to be “victims.” This theme of a prevailing violence, fear, and morbid curiosity elicited surprise and anxiety from its unsuspecting viewers. In the early 1980s, Hambleton created his most iconic “Shadow Man” works — artfully splattered ominous shadowy figures on unexpected street corners, walls, and alleys that startled viewers into a visceral awareness that the city was still a dangerous place.

This book features over 200 images including his early “Shadow Man” canvas paintings, as well as photographs of his in situ street work, a selection of his “Marlboro” rodeo horse silhouettes, and his “Beautiful Paintings” series of landscapes and seascapes, alongside other works on paper; behind-the-scenes studio shots; personal, unseen photographs of the artist; and inspirational imagery. Hambleton was renowned for influencing artists such as Banksy, Blek le Rat, and Shepard Fairey. This arresting, one-of-a-kind book will appeal to those interested in visual arts, street art, graffiti, and art history.

About the Author:

Vladimir Restoin Roitfeld is a French-American businessman and president of CR Fashion Book Ltd. media company. Andy Valmorbida is an Australian-born art entrepreneur, collector, and president of Untitled-1 Holdings.

The first comprehensive book in more than twenty years of the artist’s haunting and textural photographic work, published to accompany a major retrospective at the Addison Gallery of American Art.

A definitive monograph to accompany the first museum survey of the renowned photographer and conceptual artist Rosamond Purcell (b. 1942), known for her strangely beautiful, often unsettling photographs of objects from the natural and man-made world.

Видавництво: Rizzoli

The first book on painter and sculptor Sam Moyer, best known for her unique practice of combining remnants of stone and natural materials inlaid into painted canvas, creating powerfully expressive works.

Sam Moyer has developed a distinctive language of abstraction, creating paintings, structures, and sculptural objects that draw inspiration from architectural space and natural materials. Recognized for a diverse practice in which she unites found textures and objects in innovative ways, Moyer crafts compelling hybrids, often combining hand-painted fabrics with repurposed marble, slate, and stone that carry textural imperfections reflecting industrial design processes. Her practice has evolved from its more conceptual and process-based origins to address formal and theoretical issues regarding the construct of painting. In all her productions, issues of scale and space remain critical. Moyer is particularly interested in the way architecture functions in tandem with her objects to create dynamic visual experiences.

In this volume, the artist’s first monograph, curators Renaud Proch and Scout Hutchinson contribute the first extended critical essay on the artist’s art and career, identifying key works and exhibitions of the last ten years and detailing her artistic trajectory. Artist and writer Ross Simonini, who has known Moyer for a decade, contributes an in-depth interview with the artist, and noted novelist Kaitlyn Greenidge offers a poetic reading of Moyer’s artwork.

An influential figure in Eastern Europe’s 1960s neo-avantgarde, Stano Filko synthesized Dada, Pop Art, Fluxus, and Conceptual Art into a universalist vision of art and life. Influenced by subjects such as modernist architecture and mathematical algorithms, but also by spiritual transcendence and the cosmos, he designed pneumatic objects and interactive environments, assemblages, text-based works, performances, and happenings that attempted to circumvent state repression. Having fled to West Germany in 1981, Filko exhibited at documenta 7 in Kassel in 1982, and then relocated to New York, where he took up Neo-Expressionist painting, embracing a rainbow-colored chakra system, System SF, that he explored for the rest of his life. Not least thanks to his curiosity, experimental approach, and self-criticism Filko’s works sustain a character of contemporaneity and remain meaningful today.

About thee Artist:

Stano Filko (1937, Veľká Hradná–2015, Bratislava) was considered one of the most influential Slovakian artists from the 1960s until his death. Following achievements as a conceptual artist, he became “persona non grata” as a result of the suppression brought about by the Prague Spring in 1968. After having managed to escape to West Germany in 1981, he relocated to New York in 1982. In 1990 he returned to Bratislava, where he transformed his Snesčenkova studio house into a Gesamtkunst- werk designed according to the principles of his System SF.

A retrospective of the preeminent Greek-born American artist, who was a pioneer in the use of neon in the realm of fine art.

Prolific multimedia artist Stephen Antonakos (1926–2013) is best known for his resplendent abstract neon sculptures — instantly recognizable for their vibrant colors and crisp geometry. Along with well-known artists Lucio Fontana, Bruce Nauman, Keith Sonnier, and his compatriot Chryssa, Antonakos brought new perceptual and formal possibilities to the medium of neon.

This comprehensive book comprises Antonakos’s diverse output of neon, canvases, drawings, travel collages, chapels, and gold works, all of which reflect an abiding concern with illumination, incomplete geometric shapes, and an almost mystical spirituality that is manifest throughout his oeuvre, from his overtly religious pieces to his playful assembled collages from his trips to Greece. His later works feature neon lights placed behind painted or gold-leaf panels, often bathing the surfaces and the surrounding space in gold halos like Byzantine icons, a tradition that has long fascinated this extraordinary artist.

Author David Ebony provides research on Antonakos as a central figure in the international avant-garde of the 1960s and ’70s. He also discusses the artist’s Greek heritage and legacy, as well as the spiritual and mystical aspects of his later works.

About the Author:

David Ebony is a contributing editor of Art in America and a frequent contributor to Artnet News and Yale University Press online, among other publications.

The Future (and past) is Female: Summer Wheat’s whimsical, often tongue-in-cheek tableaux in rich jewel tones punctuated with bright neons, teem with fantastical figures that memorialize tribes of women hunting, collaborating, celebrating, and ultimately replacing millennia of images of male rulers and warriors.

Summer Wheat’s unique formative experiences with art growing up in Oklahoma were shaped by the aesthetic and conceptual drive of Native American art and Indigenous culture. Bridging those early influences with the canon of Western art (from ancient art to medieval tapestries) and popular references such as astrology and comic books, the artist’s work centers female archetypes in her expansive practice of painting, sculpture, and large-scale installation.

For the artist’s first monograph, curator Jennifer Sudul Edwards discusses the wide range of subjects that inform Wheat’s work, including the artist’s interest in alchemy. Curator Anne Ellegood in conversation with the artist discusses Wheat’s sculptural work, large-scale installations, and first foray into building a freestanding architectural space. Jennifer Krasinski explores Wheat’s unique approach to painting; her impressive wall works resemble a cross between intricate beadwork and the pixel-like structure of a digital image.

About the Author:

Jennifer Sudul Edwards, PhD, is the Chief Curator and Curator of Contemporary Art at the Mint Museum in Charlotte. Jennifer Krasinski has written on the subject of art, film, video, and performance for numerous publications such as Artforum, Art in America, and Bidoun, among many others. Anne Ellegood is the Executive Director of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (ICA LA). Diedrick Brackens is an artist best known for his woven tapestries.

‘I received an email telling me it was over. I didn’t know how to respond. It was as if it wasn’t meant for me. It ended with the words: "Take Care of Yourself". I took this recommendation literally. I asked a hundred and two women, chosen for their profession, to interpret the letter in their professional capacity. To analyse it, provide a commentary on it, act it, dance it, sing it. Dissect it. Squeeze it dry. Understand for me. Answer for me. It was a way to take the time to break up. At my own pace. A way to take care of myself.’

This superbly designed book accompanied Sophie Calle’s exhibition in the French pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2007. It comprises three books – one main volume, two smaller inside that – and four accompanying DVDs

Includes 107 interpretations by a range of successful female professionals, from leading actors and dancers to physicists, psychoanalysts and lawyers.

Art is constantly evolving, inviting experimentation, and, in today’s digital age, uses artificial intelligence to create entirely new realities. Data as a tool of expression is used by artists as an equal partner to break new ground at eye-level, while at the same time redefining the concept of art to revolutionize the world of design. This volume focuses on the esthetics and creativity of a new generation of designers who are using algorithm-supported tools along the vertical, from graphic design to 3D animation, kinetic objects and real-time visuals, to robotics and spatial installations, as well as hybrid approaches between digital and analogue. For this compendium, the editor was able to involve the biggest names in the world of data-driven design to present their most important work on the basis of facts, aspects, and stories and to provide insights into their creative processes. These range from the vision via the underlying code and challenges in the implementation concept, to the finished work. On a theoretical level, the presented works are significantly enriched by interviews and texts of experts and insiders of the scene.

The Age of Data“ shows the future of art and design in this day and age in which the whole world is under close scrutiny due to the pandemic. It is an invitation to take the next steps and a motivation to keep up with the ongoing data-based design developments.

“What a wide range of works, artists, perspectives, technics – a stunning sampler of the 21st century! “

NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, exploded into the art space last year, no doubt because Beeple (a digital artist) sold his NFT at Christie’s auction house for a staggering $69 million. Yet the story of NFTs is much more interesting, significant, and subtle than that sale. This book explains NFTs in the art world — and the ways they might not only democratize the arts but enliven our larger democracy.

Since the NFT phenomenon took over the art world, useful information that isn’t too reductive is in short supply. Artists, collectors, arts professionals, art lovers, and museumgoers are still trying to understand what NFTs are, how to benefit from or engage with them, and what they mean for the art world in the future. This book is precisely for this audience.

The authors take the reader through the basic concepts of NFTs and the underlying technology of blockchain, including their origins, their surprising connections to the history of artmaking and art collecting, and their potential to radically reshape the art world. The book invites the reader to engage with this new technology, to understand its connections to the longer arc of art history, and to help shape its future.

The volume is structured around four key chapters: Origin Stories (where NFTs come from), Artists + Making (how artists are currently engaging with the technology and minting NFTs logistically and conceptually), Collectors + Buying (what does it mean to collect an NFT and other advice for current and soon-to-be collectors), and Future States (how NFTs will upend and democratize the arts). In addition to the authors’ extensive knowledge, the book draws on a wide range of interviews with leading contributors to the NFT story.

The Story of NFTs is an inventive, elegant, and not insufferable book on a topic that matters more than most people think, in ways that are surprising and at odds with the one-dimensional cryptocurrency story. The many intersecting stories of NFTs in this book—knowledge stories, artist stories, democracy stories — center how we know what is true in an age of digital records and how we build collaborative and equitable structures for the future.

About the Authors:

Amy Whitaker is a long-standing blockchain and NFT researcher in the arts and Associate Professor at New York University. She is the award-winning author of Museum LegsArt Thinking, and Economics of Visual Art

Nora Burnett Abrams, PhD, is the Mark G. Falcone Director of MCA Denver.

A celebration of embroidery in contemporary art, illustrating the myriad ways it has been embraced as a form of creative expression

Showcasing over 80 international artists who incorporate embroidery into their practice, this book provides a survey of embroidery in contemporary art, illustrating the huge range of ways in which the craft has been embraced as a form of creative expression. Some artists evoke a kind of nostalgia, rediscovering skills that have fallen from fashion or promoting the value of ancient handicrafts in an industrialized world of mass-production. Others push boundaries by using embroidery on photographs, poetic installations, embroidered reproductions of everyday objects, or by using it to tackle political, personal or transgressive themes.

Threads is a captivating exploration of their creative journeys, their influences, the technical challenges they face and the message they wish to convey.
