A major survey of KAWS and his eye-popping work, from collectible art toys to UNIQLO T-shirts, from graffiti to museum exhibitions

Appropriating characters, images and effects from pop culture, the work of KAWS blurs the lines between high and low art, and between art and fashion.

Effectively deploying film and television favourites for his toys, large-scale sculpture and bold, nearly abstract painting, KAWS recasts the familiar colours and forms of popular entertainment in cheeky and often poignantly human terms. Influenced by Andy Warhol and other Pop artists, hard-edge abstract painting and graffiti, KAWS’ work deftly straddles consumer culture and artistic innovation, and his distinctive style is as much at home in his toys as in his monumental sculpture. KAWS: Where the End Starts explores the artist’s prolific career in depth, featuring key paintings, sculptures, drawings, toys and fashion and advertising designs.

This extensive monograph, including contributions from Andrea Karnes, Michael Auping, Dieter Buchhart and Pharrell Williams, reveals critical aspects of KAWS’ formal and conceptual development over the past 20 years, as his career has shifted from graffiti to fine art and collaborations with designers and brands such as Comme des Garçons, SUPREME, Nigo (A Bathing Ape) and Nike.

Published in a hardcover edition with more than 150 color reproductions by the Museum of Modern Art, Fort Worth in conjunction with the major 2016 Fall exhibition on KAWS.

About the Authors:

Brooklyn-based KAWS (born in 1974) is widely considered one of the most relevant artists of his generation. Within the Pop art tradition, he has created a prolific body of influential work, which both engages young people with contemporary art and straddles the worlds of art and design to include both product and graphic design, paintings, murals and sculpture.

Marla Price is Director of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.

Michael Auping is Chief Curator at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas, and the author of books on abstract expressionism, Clyfford Still, and Arshile Gorky.

Exuberant, profane, witty, and provocative, the images in this book reveal the political dimension of Keith Haring’s artistic concerns

Through his graffiti-inspired drawings, paintings, sculptures, murals, and other works, Keith Haring created an immediately recognizable visual iconography that spoke to an enormous population — gay and straight, young and old, male and female. His importance in the annals of popular culture is indisputable, but little attention has been paid to his advocacy for social justice.

Haring’s political perspective is the focus of this visually arresting selection of works that traces the artist’s development and historical significance and gives new gravitas to his career. Accompanying a major exhibition at the de Young museum in San Francisco, this book features more than 130 works of art, including large-scale paintings on tarpaulin and canvas, sculptures, and subway drawings. Together they create a narrative that explores Haring’s responses to nuclear disarmament, racial inequality, capitalist excess, environmental degradation, and other prevalent social issues.

Essays and conversations with writers, critics, and art dealers round out this important analysis of Haring’s life, career, and passion.

About the Author:

Dieter Buchhart is an art critic for Kunstforum International and the author of Keith Haring: The Political Line (DelMonico Books·Prestel).

Richard Marshall

Видавництво: Rizzoli

As one of today’s most exciting artists, Kenny Scharf rose to prominence in the New York art scene in the ’80s as part of a dynamic and influential group of artists that included Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. He has since returned to California, but he has retained the playful Pop aesthetic for which he is internationally renowned.

This completely new volume covers Scharf’s illustrious career and his experiences and activities in the downtown art scene. His work is instantly recognizable, with idiosyncratic cartoon creatures popping up in the oddest of places: in paintings, on functional objects, or piled up on top of each other to form huge totem-poles.

Richard Marshall helps navigate the reader across the decades of Scharf’s career. Carlo McCormick’s essay focuses on Scharf’s fanciful customized cars and installations. Ann Magnuson reminisces about Scharf’s happenings in the East Village and the club scene.

About the Author:

Richard Marshall is an independent curator, consultant, and art historian based in New York. Between 1975 and 1993 he was a curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. Carlo McCormick is senior editor at Paper magazine in New York. Ann Magnuson is an actress and performance artist living in Los Angeles.

The Joan Miro Foundation presents "Her Memory", an exhibition by Kiki Smith organised in collaboration with the Museum Haus Esters in Krefeld and the Kunsthalle Nurnberg, containing recent work by this US artist. It could in fact be called an exhibition in progress, since it has been amplified in each venue anterior to the exhibition presented in the Foundation, which is the last location of this tour. Kiki Smith was born in Nurnberg in 1954 to an artistic family: her mother an opera singer and her father Minimalist artist Tony Smith. Her work is characterised by a constant reflection on human existence and on life and death; and her drawings of the human body, which are both traumatic and poetic. She reached international recognition at the end of the 1980s. In 2006-2007, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and the Whitney Museum in New York organised a touring retrospective exhibition, "Kiki Smith: A Gathering, 1980-2005", which signalled the end of a period.

Jeffrey Deitch, Designed by Stefan Sagmeister
ID: 16165
Видавництво: Rizzoli

This extraordinary three-dimensional package of Live the Art, is a suitable homage to Jeffrey Deitch’s legendary stature and influence as an art dealer and producer of memorable installations and art happenings that robustly transcended the idea of a mere “exhibition.”

More than four years in the making, and divided into chapters devoted to each year between 1996 and 2010, Live the Art explores in detail the astonishing shows and performances the visionary Deitch mounted in a one-story former garage on Grand Street in Soho that would be the primary home of Deitch Projects for fifteen years.

Deitch illuminates the founding concept by stating, “Deitch Projects was not meant to be an art gallery. The concept was simple. We would not operate as a gallery but would become a commercial version of the ‘project room’ that the Museum of Modern Art and a number of other American Museums had established in the ‘70s and ‘80s.”

Deitch’s original guidelines were simple: his intention was to invite artists who had not yet had a solo exhibition to create a “project” rather than a conventional show of work, and he would provide funds for the artist to produce their visions in the space.
The first artist was Vanessa Beecroft who produced “VB16 Piano Americano-Beige, 1996” which consisted of the immediately notorious roomful of models clad in pantyhose, bras, high heels and matching platinum wigs milling languorously around the space. Images in the book of this performance are accompanied by Beecroft’s notes and memories about the project, and this formula is repeated throughout the book with the artist’s own commentary alongside images of over 150 projects mounted in the space, and in other locations including Union Square Park, Woodlawn Cemetery, Miami Beach, Rockefeller Center, Brooklyn, and Deitch’s satellite space in Long Island City.

Artists whose no-holds-barred projects graced Deitch Projects in its fifteen years include Barbara Kruger, Cecily Brown, Malick Sidibé, Tim Noble and Sue Webster, ASFOUR, Liza Lou, a collaboration between Madonna and photographer Steven Klein, Kehinde Wiley, assume astro vivid focus, Yoko Ono, Jeff Koons, film director Michel Gondry, Dan Colen, Vito Acconci, Stefan Sagmeister, Stephen Sprouse, Jules de Balincourt, Shepard Fairey, and Miranda July, among many others.

A Deitch Projects event launch was the place for an art-savvy New Yorker to be, and the street theater of attendees became part of the events themselves.  As Deitch notes in Live the Art, “One of my goals in starting Deitch Projects was to create not just a gallery but a community. It is very rewarding to see that we created not just a community, but an art family.” There is no question that this goal was achieved, and Live the Art is a detailed look back on every event created by Deitch and shared by this “family” of artists and art lovers for fifteen incredible years.

About the Authors:

Deitch Projects created a new model redefining what an art gallery could be. In addition to presenting more than 250 artist projects during the fifteen years of its existence it created a remarkable community of artists, musicians and other creative talents. After closing the gallery Jeffrey Deitch became the director of The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Deitch is now working on bringing his influential Art in the Streets exhibition to New York.

Stefan Sagmeister is a New York-based graphic designer and typographer. He is co-founder of Sagmeister & Walsh, a design firm that creates identities, commercials, websites, apps, films, books and objects.

The exhibition constitutes an important milestone as the first show on kinetic art, means art with moving parts, to be held in Spain that features works created since the late 19th Century up to those produced in 2006. The museum received loans never before seen in Spain from the most important museums in the world, such as the MoMA/NY, the Centre Georges Pompidou/Paris, the Whitney Museum of American Art/NY, the Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York, the Tate Modern/London and the Galería Nazionale D'Arte Moderna di Roma. Important galleries also loaned pieces, such as the Denise René Gallery, which in 1955 organized the first exhibition dedicated to kinetic artists. The show brings together over 80 works by 45 Spanish and foreign artists. In this exhibition, visitors will be able to view paintings, objects, chronophotographs, calotypes, serigraphs, digital prints and films that all have one thing in common - the implicit concept of movement. Kinetic art is art that contains moving parts or depends on motion for its effect. The moving parts are generally powered by wind, a motor or the observer. The term kinetic sculpture refers to a class of art made primarily from the late 1950s through 1960s. Kinetic art was first recorded by the sculptors Naum Gabo and Antoine Pevsner in their Realist Manifesto issued as part of a manifesto of constructivism in 1920 in Moscow. Bicycle Wheel, of 1913, by Marcel Duchamp, is said to be the first kinetic

Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs
ID: 8469
Видавництво: Rizzoli

Luxury and art have never been more closely linked than they are in these early years of the twenty-first century.

Virtually all the world’s major luxury houses have associated themselves with contemporary art through sponsorships, commissions, or foundations, and these points of exchange nourish the increasingly symbiotic relationship between fashion, art, and other design disciplines. Of all modern luxury brands, Louis Vuitton can claim to maintain the richest and most varied associations with the world of art. Included in this volume are Louis Vuitton’s important collaborations with an elite group of artists, architects, designers, and photographers, such as Jun Aoki, Shigeru Ban, Vanessa Beecroft, Olafur Eliasson, Zaha Hadid, David LaChapelle, Jean Larivière, Annie Leibovitz, Takashi Murakami, Richard Prince, Stephen Sprouse, James Turrell, Inez Van Lamsweerde, and Vinoodh Matadin.

The book is structured as a seductive anthology of the house’s most visible collaborations. Critical essays examine and position Louis Vuitton’s patronage — under the guidance of Artistic Director Marc Jacobs — during one of the most fertile periods of contemporary art and design.

About the Author:

Marc Jacobs is the Creative Director of Louis Vuitton Malletier and the chief designer of Vuitton’s ready-to-wear collections.

André Heller
ID: 17019
Видавництво: Phaidon

A landmark book documenting the first-ever art amusement park – launched in 1987 in Hamburg, Germany – in anticipation of its global reintroduction

In the late 1980s, more than 30 of the era’s most acclaimed artists – including Jean-Michel Basquiat, David Hockney, Roy Lichtenstein, Salvador Dalí, and Keith Haring – designed unique and fully operational fairground attractions specifically for the original park, including rides, interactive sculptures, games, performances, and music.

Each artist’s contribution is documented in photographs that show the artist at work, with details of the artworks, and showing the art in the context of the exhibition. Giving access to rare artworks that have not been widely viewed in 35 years, this book is being published for the first time in English with an updated preface.

About the Author:

André Heller is an acclaimed international multimedia artist. He is the creator of best-selling books, largescale flying and floating sculptures, and garden artworks, and has had a platinum-selling career as a singer and songwriter. The exhibition La Corte del Rey Arturo (The Court of King Arthur) presented in the Crystal Palace was a project that reflects Abakanowicz's childhood experience in the Polish forests and lakes where, according to her own words, there were strange powers with magical force of the local popular religious festivals. The exhibition catalog combines, in a retrospective way, a review of Abakanowicz' s previous work with the series that she completed for this occasion. This publication includes three essays of the specialists in her work: Mariusz Hermansdorfer, Karoline Hubner and Mary Jane Jacob.
