Frida Kahlo is the most famous Latin-American painter of the 20th century and a fundamental figure in Mexican art

She met Pablo Picasso and André Bretón; she was a friend of Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky and of poet Pablo Neruda. She received at her home writers, artists, film directors, doctors, politicians, photographers... Diego Rivera, the most recognised artist of Mexican mural art and Frida´s husband, described her in this manner: “Your genius is in the painting and in your image. Decidedly, there is no other living painter that can do what you do. You have laid (Te has echado al pico) with the whole painter race”.

Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) is, without doubt, the most famous Latin-American painter of the 20th century and a fundamental figure in Mexican art. Her work has been celebrated internationally as emblematic of Mexican national and indigenous traditions, and by feminists for its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form. This fabulously illustrated volume brings together a series of stunning portraits, each one giving readers a glimpse into the many and varied ways in which Frida Kahlo has inspired countless artists across the globe.

Theorists and artists from Jack Halberstam to Peter Rehberg consider the fruitful cross-pollination of video, punk, queerness and gender politics

Since the 1970s, the medium of video and multimedia art practice has been closely linked to the subcultural and countercultural movements. Art and music videos in particular demonstrate great subversive potential: artists and musicians oppose traditional values, exploring and repeatedly transgressing social norms and gender stereotypes. This publication reviews artistic strategies in the context of a history of punk and its offshoots, combining scholarly opinions from the fields of art history, queer theory, media studies, gender studies, postcolonial studies, and cultural studies on an equal footing with field reports from the practice of alternative archives and artistic image essays.

About the Authors:

Jack Halberstam is a professor of gender studies and English at Columbia University.
Angela McRobbie is a professor at Goldsmiths, University of London.

George Condo, Didier Ottinger
ID: 15870
Видавництво: Flammarion

George Condo’s unconventional paintings are illuminated in context with his vast range of artistic influences — from Tiepolo to Picasso to Basquiat, and from psychedelic to new wave.

George Condo is renowned for his eclectic mix of artistic influences — from the Old Masters to cubism to pop art. The artist who coined the term “artificial realism” blends imagery and styles from various movements in works that critique contemporary Western culture and its excesses. His paintings and sculptures feature Humanoids — figures that are metaphors of our humanity, magnifying our emotions and revealing our high and low points. For the first time in his own words, Condo reveals the genesis and significance of his distorted creations and unveils previously unseen paintings created during the pandemic and the political turmoil in the United States.

Didier Ottinger examines the career, influences, and works of this unconventional artist who is at once rewriting the history of art and caricaturing the immoderation of the modern world. An exhibition of Condo’s Humanoids at the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco opens nearly a quarter century after he created set and costume designs for Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo.

About the Authors:

Didier Ottinger, general curator of heritage and specialist in modern and contemporary painting, is assistant director of cultural programming at the Centre Pompidou where he curated exhibitions on Edward Hopper (2013), David Hockney (2017), and Georgia O’Keeffe (2022). American artist George Condo’s work is in the permanent collections of the Met, MoMA, Broad Foundation in Los Angeles, Tate, and Centre Pompidou. Exhibitions of his work have been shown in New York, London, Rotterdam, Berlin, Venice, Shanghai, and more. H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover is a philanthropist.

Simon Baker
ID: 15871
Видавництво: Thames & Hudson

The definitive monograph on the iconoclastic painter George Condo

With his arresting, unsettling style, George Condo emerged out of the dynamism of the New York art scene in the early 1980s, and he has been restlessly painting, drawing and sculpting – bringing forms into the world in one way or another – ever since. Condo’s originality lies in his transformation of references and inspirations, in both style and content, which include the canon of Western art history; from his journey through Greek classical sculpture to an unlimited and free exchange of painterly languages ranging from Rembrandt and Velasquez to Picasso and Warhol, and a unique vision of literary and popular culture.

With his ‘fake’ Old Masters, reconfigured Manets, impossibly intricate paintings that seem abstract only from a distance, fractured and multifaceted ‘psychologically Cubist’ portraits, and the orgiastic misdemeanours of a host of butlers, bankers and priests, Condo has invented, mastered and expanded not just one painterly language but an entire lexicon.

Working closely with Condo, Simon Baker has combined biographical, chronological and thematic approaches to survey the artist’s work and career to date. An introductory essay on Condo’s contradictory nature and a chapter exploring his phenomenal early career are followed by three thematic chapters that look at the years from 1984 to the present, tracing Condo’s systematic reconstruction of the techniques of painting, exploring his relationship to the concept of abstraction, and probing the darker side of his psychological iconography in drawing, painting, sculpture and writing.

George Condo is the definitive monograph on this unique artist. It will appeal to artists, art students and those with a general interest in art.

About the Author:

Simon Baker is Director of Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris (MEP). He was formerly Senior Curator, Photography and International Art, Tate. Prior to becoming Tate’s first curator of photography, he was Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Nottingham. ID: 16228
Видавництво: Rizzoli

Accompanied by a traveling exhibition, this book on the Bahamian artist’s textile portraits serves as a love letter to Black women: their style, strength, vulnerabilities, and beauty.

This debut of the 29-year-old Bahamian-born artist aims to redefine the often-politicized Black body, with portraits made in a range of textile-based techniques, such as embroidery and appliqué, celebrating Black women.

Gio Swaby’s intimate portraits are unique, highly personal figurative works made from an array of colorful fabrics and intricate, freehand lines of thread on canvas that explore the intersections of Blackness and womanhood. Illustrated with 80 works in full color that span from 2017 to 2021, this is the first book on this contemporary feminist artist who is a rising star in the world of textiles and portraiture. According to Swaby, “I wanted to create a space where we could see ourselves reflected in a moment of joy, celebrated without expectations, without connected stereotypes.”

Writers and scholars with multiple points of view take on Swaby’s work and delve into her place within contemporary Black art.

About the Author:

Katherine Pill is curator of contemporary art at the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, Florida. Melinda Watt is Chair and Christa C. Mayer Thurman Curator of Textiles at the Art Institute of Chicago. Nikole Hannah-Jones is a Pulitzer Prize–winning reporter for the New York Times Magazine.

Handbook of Tyranny portrays the routine cruelties of the twenty-first century through a series of detailed non-fictional graphic illustrations. None of these cruelties represent extraordinary violence — they reflect day-to-day implementation of laws and regulations around the globe.

Every page of the book questions our current world of walls and fences, police tactics and prison cells, crowd control and refugee camps. The dry and factual style of storytelling through technical drawings is the graphic equivalent to bureaucratic rigidity born of laws and regulations. The level of detail depicted in the illustrations of the book mirror the repressive efforts taken by authorities around the globe.

The twenty-first century shows a general striving for an ever more regulated and protective society. Yet the scale of authoritarian intervention and their stealth design adds to the growing difficulty of linking cause and effect. Handbook of Tyranny gives a profound insight into the relationship between political power, territoriality and systematic cruelties.

This new edition includes updated figures and eight additional pages.

The definitive book on High Line art, the public art program on the High Line, one of the most popular destinations in New York City. High Art surveys the first five years of art on the High Line, the unique elevated park in New York City created through the repurposing of an abandoned railway line. Since 2009, when the High Line was opened to the public, nineteen million visitors have been witness to more than 100 public art projects animating the grounds of this unique "park in the sky." The works include sculpture, installation, billboards, video, performance, and sound works by a range of artists, from established figures such as John Baldessari, El Anatsui, Maurizio Cattelan, Gilbert & George, and Ed Ruscha, to critically acclaimed mid-career artists such as Carol Bove, Sarah Sze, and Mark Grotjahn. The High Line is steadily broadening the audience for contemporary art while pushing the boundaries of traditional public art programs. This beautifully illustrated volume features the High Line’s diverse projects thematically, including full-color images and short texts on the various projects, along with an introduction by curator Cecilia Alemani; an essay on the High Line’s effect on Chelsea, the neighborhood cultural hub where it is located; and a roundtable discussion about public art today.

The three-dimensional look of today’s visual culture is being shaped by techniques and styles from fine art and handicraft

High Touch is a powerful collection of cutting-edge tactile design. This choice selection of three-dimensional work defines a new visual language for presentation and storytelling. The handicraft and artisanship necessary for the creation of these works appeal to the interdisciplinary mindset of our time and activate more of our senses than standard two-dimensional images ever could.

High Touch documents an inspiring range of material objects and spatial orchestrations that meld crafts including crochet, papercraft, and the design of costumes and masks with the techniques of more traditional art forms such as installation, sculpture, collage, photography, and illustration. The examples featured in the book prove that the scope for this trailblazing work is enormous. Applications include advertising, brand presentations, editorial design, photography, product design, stage design, and scenography, as well as related fields that either exist already or that their creators have yet to invent.

Today’s visual culture is shaped by a vast wealth of influences from diverse styles, cultures, and eras. Handcrafts including crochet, papercraft, and the design of costumes and masks are being melded with the techniques of more traditional art forms such as installation, sculpture, collage, photography, and illustration.

A new visual language is currently being formed out of the skillful and unusual combination of creative styles, as well as the use of an expanded range of materials and techniques. One of the most striking aspects of today’s visual culture is its handcrafted quality. The recent work of many creatives is characterized by craftsmanship and an intensive, even laborious exploration of the featured techniques, materials, or styles.

High touch is a term used in design theory to describe an accessible, human visuality. The book High Touch is a compilation of current work that is broadening and enriching this definition in a contemporary way. It presents a rich selection of innovative, often handmade design created with the full spectrum of materials and stylistic devices in existence today - all of which also strive to expand this palette of visual possibilities in a meaningful way.

The examples featured in High Touch prove that the scope of application for this trailblazing work is enormous. It includes advertising, brand presentations, photography, product design, stage design, and scenography, as well as related fields that either exist already or that their creators have yet to invent.

As the opposition between illusion and reality dissolves and the boundaries between the world we inhabit and its virtual dimensions blur, Immerse! examines how computer-generated public spaces shape our current political and social discourses. What is the potential of virtual reality within the art field, when concepts such as presence and absence, material and immaterial are beginning to lose their validity?

Realized as part of the international research project Beyond Matter that explores the shift in the production and mediation of visual art within institutional frameworks. Exhibition spaces are physical locations of knowledge production and exchange, where spatial qualities play an important role in the contextualization of information. One of the goals of the project is to develop virtual productions that maintain these sensual qualities, but add layers of digitized and born-digital content to defy transience and the dependency on geographical locations, and create entirely new immersive experiences.

The catalogue offers the reflections on the theme by curators Corina L. Apostol and Lívia Nolasco-Rózsás as well as 19 visual essays by trailblazing artists and four in-depth theoretical texts by Helen Kaplinsky, Matthew Fuller, Lukáš Likavčan, Zsolt Miklósvölgyi and Márió Z. Nemes that explore the concept of immersion.

The bible of indie culture. index A to Z celebrates the uncompromising personalities, humor, and DIY brilliance of the indie generation and captures the spirit of the era with sections like F for Fashion, featuring designers Kate Spade and Marc Jacobs; I for Indie with Harmony Korine and John Waters; and others such as Royalty, Vanished, and X-Rated. Paying homage to Generation X's "It" glossy, this volume is packed with index's most memorable interviews and greatest photographs of the time, including previously unpublished outtakes and party pictures.

Beginning as a low-budget, oversized fanzine in 1996, index magazine quickly became one of the most influential small publications in the United States. With a smart and irreverent voice that epitomized the late '90s indie ethos, the magazine brought together some of the most relevant cultural figures who were at that time young and often unknown, and who have since become cultural icons or celebrities, including Bjork, Scarlett Johansson, Alexander McQueen, and Ryan McGinley, to name just a few. New interviews with founders Peter Halley and Bob Nickas, a reminiscence by Bruce LaBruce, and a historical overview by Wendy Vogel offer further looks behind the scenes.

About the Author:

New York City-based artist Peter Halley published index magazine from 1996 to 2005. Bob Nickas is a critic and curator based in New York. Bruce LaBruce is a Toronto-based filmmaker, writer, director, photographer, and artist. Wendy Vogel is a New York-based writer and curator.

Reconstructing an omitted chapter of art history. The Untold History of Immersive Art

At the intersection of art, architecture and design, environments create and transform space into an immersive experience, inviting the audience to engage and interact. So far, art history has been focused on the works of male artists mostly from the US and Europe. Inside Other Spaces: Environments by Women Artists 1956–1976 aims to signpost a different narrative by highlighting women’s fundamental contributions to this field. Redefining the canon, the exhibition features 11 pioneering women artists from three generations, spanning Asia, Europe, and the Americas, including Judy Chicago, Aleksandra Kasuba, and Lygia Clark. Given the experimental nature of such environments, many of these original works were deconstructed or destroyed. The detailed reconstructions, which are carried out with the help of restorers and based on archival photographs, construction plans, and material lists, are presented here for the first time. Conceived as a reference book for the historiography of environments, the publication comprises a wealth of visual material also on artists not featured in the show, such as Yayoi Kusama and Yoko Ono, providing leading scholars’ essays and extensive bibliographies on environments and individual artists.

Featured Artists: Lygia Clark, Aleksandra Kasuba, Marta Minujín, Maria Nordman, Faith Wilding, Tsuruko Yamazaki

An intimate monograph of the professional and personal creations of a midcentury design legend. Irving Harper is the most famous designer you have never heard of.

Working as an associate at the office of George Nelson in the 1950s and ’60s, Harper was responsible for such icons of midcentury design as the Marshmallow sofa, the Ball clock, and numerous Herman Miller textile designs. Harper’s unrecognized contribution to this seminal era of design, and his incredible paper sculptures (made in his spare time to "relieve stress"), are presented for the first time in this book. An essay by design critic Julie Lasky introduces Harper’s commercial design work, recognizable designs from graphics to domestic goods to furniture that are still coveted and appreciated today, designed for the offices of Raymond Loewy, George Nelson, and then his own studio Harper + George. The second part of the book documents Harper’s extensive paper sculptures, which have never been exhibited. More than three hundred works fill Harper’s house and barn in Rye, New York, where this array of fantastical people and animal sculptures was created from modest and inexpensive materials as diverse as spaghetti and toothpicks in addition to paper. Images of Harper’s home, filled with furniture and objects of his own design as well as his paper sculptures, offer a rare glimpse into a Modern design enthusiast’s paradise.

Offering insight into an important era of American design as well as the prolific output of a creative mind, this book promises to be the first to recognize Irving Harper’s contribution to the field and will appeal to fans of Modern design.

About the Authors:

Michael Maharam is the CEO of Maharam, a recipient of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award for Design Patron, and the author of Maharam Agenda. Julie Lasky is Deputy Editor, Home at the New York Times and was formerly the editor-in-chief of I.D. and Interiors.

The untold history of the seminal cultural venue Jabberjaw — the underground star of Los Angeles’s historic indie scene of the 1990s. Billing itself as a "coffeehouse art gallery" when it opened in 1989, Jabberjaw quickly became not only the cornerstone of the Los Angeles post-punk scene but also a hub of the underground music scene nationwide. Bridging the gap between punk and indie, Jabberjaw was a bastion of counterculture that hosted shows for bands from the obscure (Hole, Unsane) to the legendary (Nirvana, Pearl Jam) in an environment that reflected a generation. In collaboration with the owners of the club, and with contributions from many of the musicians and artists who played and spent time there, It All Dies Anyway is a record of the venue’s brief but influential existence. Designed and compiled by Bryan Ray Turcotte, the book is a visual feast, layering flyers and posters onto photographs, handmade record covers, and Polaroids of the gallery to paint an engrossing portrait not only of a venue but also of a forgotten time and place in music history.

About the Author:

Bryan Ray Turcotte is an author, curator, designer, publisher, and musician based in Los Angeles. He is the author of Punk Is Dead: Punk Is Everything and Fucked Up and Photocopied: Instant Art of the Punk Rock Movement.
