An intimate monograph of the professional and personal creations of a midcentury design legend. Irving Harper is the most famous designer you have never heard of.

Working as an associate at the office of George Nelson in the 1950s and ’60s, Harper was responsible for such icons of midcentury design as the Marshmallow sofa, the Ball clock, and numerous Herman Miller textile designs. The untold history of the seminal cultural venue Jabberjaw — the underground star of Los Angeles’s historic indie scene of the 1990s. Billing itself as a "coffeehouse art gallery" when it opened in 1989, Jabberjaw quickly became not only the cornerstone of the Los Angeles post-punk scene but also a hub of the underground music scene nationwide. Jakub Julian Ziółkowski (*1980, Zamość, Poland) is one of the most eminent Polish contemporary painters. He trained at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, where he lives and works today. Since 2003, his work has been shown in numerous group and solo exhibitions, including Hauser & Wirth, London (2017), Neues Museum Nürnberg (2017), and the 55. Biennale di Venezia (2013).

Defying constructed binaries between high and low art

Art and Objecthood illuminates the role of found objects and unconventional materials in the oeuvre of world-renowned artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. His creative fervor saw no bounds, he painted and drew on everything around him—from chairs to refrigerators, but also on items he encountered on the street: discarded windows and doors, mirrors, wood boards, and subway tiles. Published on the occasion of the installation of Jeff Koons' Split-Rocker at Rockefeller Center in New York City in association with Gagosian Gallery, this colorful new book will appeal to any fan of Koons' work, as well as those interested in contemporary art and landscape architecture.

Consistent with Koons's persistent fascination with dichotomy and the in-between, the inspiration for Split-Rocker came when he decided to split and combine two similar but different toy rockers, a pony belonging to his son and a dinosaur ("Dino"). The slippage or "split" between the different halves of the heads gives an almost Cubist aspect to the composition. As the model was enlarged to the scale of a small house, the split became an opening, a profile, and a light shaft.

Jeff Koons is largely regarded as one of the most important yet controversial artists of the postwar era. His art has appeared at galleries and museums worldwide, and the subject of the beautiful new book is no exception. Since its creation in 2000, Split-Rocker has appeared at Palais des Papes, Avignon in 2000; and subsequently at Château de Versailles (2008) and Fondation Beyeler (2012). It is also in the collection of the Glenstone private museum in Potomac, Maryland, where it has been on view since June of 2013. This catalogue features images and discussions of all of these installations, including Split-Rocker's most recent exhibition at New York City's Rockefeller Center in 2014.
