About the Author:

Christopher Rothko is the son of Mark Rothko and is actively involved in managing his father's legacy. He has helped prepare more than two dozen Rothko exhibitions. Kate Rothko Prizel is the daughter of Mark Rothko. She fought and won a prolonged legal battle that resulted in the return of almost 700 of her father’s works to his estate. Alexander Nemerov is Professor at Stanford University. Hiroshi Sugimoto is a contemporary photographer and architect.

About the Author:

John Cauman is an independent curator and writer on late 19th-century and early 20th-century art. He studied at Columbia and Bennington before receiving his PhD from City University of New York with a dissertation on Matisse and America: 1905-1933. He has contributed to various publications including Inheriting Cubism and co-curated the exhibition ‘Matisse and American Art’ at Montclair Art Museum in New Jersey, 2018.

Travel is a fundamental experience of human existence. For Max Beckmann it was of existential importance both in a symbolic, but also in a deeply personal sense. In the 1920s, he regularly traveled to the noble health resorts and palace hotels on the Dutch, Italian, and French coasts. His defamation as a "degenerate" artist by the Nazi regime, however, forced him to retreat, first from Frankfurt to Berlin and subsequently into exile in Amsterdam. His emigration to the United States marked the culmination of a life entwined with the longing to travel as well as uprooting, transit and exile. Max Beckmann. DEPARTURE assembles an outstanding selection of artworks and initiates a dialogue with hitherto unseen objects and materials from the Max Beckmann Archive. It shows Beckmann’s relationship to film and literature as a producer of images of aspirations and longing resonating with notions of identity and home.

About the Author:

Max Beckmann (1884-1950) is one of the most important artists of the 20th century. A star of the Berlin Secession, Beckmann’s career was slowed by World War I and a personal crisis, but continued in the 1920s. After the Nazis forced him to resign his professorship in Frankfurt in 1933, he went into exile in Amsterdam in 1937 and subsequently emigrated to the US in 1947. Teaching in St. Louis and New York, he became the most successful German artist in the United States of his time.

Cubism, widely regarded as the most influential style to emerge at the advent of modernism, had a home in New York and a leading figure in Max Weber.

Max Weber studied under Matisse, associated with influential figures including Apollinaire, Picasso, and Delaunay, and is credited with bringing firsthand knowledge of the Parisian avant-garde to Alfred Stieglitz’s modernist circle in New York, inspiring a generation of artists. While his works are in important collections, they have not yet received the close study of the artist’s peers, such as Picasso, Braque, and Leger.

William C. Agee, a veteran museum curator and renowned scholar of twentieth-century American art, and scholar Pamela N. Koob take up the challenge in a lavishly illustrated volume, gathering together a selection of Max Weber’s best cubist works. Close readings of Weber’s paintings open the most complete survey to date of American cubism, with entries on key cubist works by Marsden Hartley, Stuart Davis, Hans Hofmann, Charles Sheeler, Morgan Russell, Stanton Macdonald-Wright, Alice Trumbull Mason, and David Smith, among many others. Filling in a missing piece of one of the twentieth century’s most influential movements, this critical reevaluation is long overdue.

Miquel Barceló (1957–) is a contemporary Spanish artist known for his experimental approach to painting and sculpture. Whether utilizing bleach, organic matter, or even live insects, Barceló’s neo-Expressionist oeuvre explores decomposition, light, and the natural landscape. Born in 1957 in Majorca, Spain, he credits the influence of Lucio Fontana. His work is both abstract and cerebral, as evidenced by his broad range of paintings, ceramics, and installations. In 2011, Barceló exhibited his sculpture in New York’s Union Square. Spot on: Amedeo Modigliani in an exciting joint catalogue

Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920) moved to Paris as a 22-year-old art student and is regarded as probably the last true bohémien in Montmartre. The exhibition catalogue to mark the 100th anniversary of his death shows him for the first time as a leading member of the avant-garde who carried the revolution of Primitivism well into the 20th century.

Modigliani’s famous nudes, unusual portraits and unique sculptures are contrasted with works by Pablo Picasso, Constantin Brâncusi and André Derain as well as artefacts from so-called “primitive” cultures. In doing so the volume focuses in particular on Modigliani’s lifelong study of the art of Primitivism, which also interested the artist friends who influenced his work. Some 100 works are on view, including numerous main works by Modigliani from the great museums and most important private collections from America to Asia.
