This exhibition catalog presents the recent atmospheric paintings of one of the most important representatives of contemporary Spanish art, inspired by the seascapes of his native Majorca.

Miquel Barceló (1957–) is a contemporary Spanish artist known for his experimental approach to painting and sculpture. Whether utilizing bleach, organic matter, or even live insects, Barceló’s neo-Expressionist oeuvre explores decomposition, light, and the natural landscape. Born in 1957 in Majorca, Spain, he credits the influence of Lucio Fontana. His work is both abstract and cerebral, as evidenced by his broad range of paintings, ceramics, and installations. In 2011, Barceló exhibited his sculpture in New York’s Union Square. Currently living and working in Paris and Majorca, the artist has works in the collections of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Reina Sofía National Museum in Madrid, among others.

When Amedeo Modigliani arrived in Paris in 1906, the Jewish-Italian artist was a painter. His meeting with sculptor Constantin Brancusi in 1909 was a revelation, and inspired Modigliani to sculpt ― almost exclusively ― until 1914, when he met art dealer Paul Guillaume. The effects of this meeting were sudden and total. Modigliani would return to painting and never look back. This volume unveils the relationship that prompted this change through analysis of Modigliani’s paintings and Guillaume’s writings. With these resources at hand, the reader gains an intimate insight into this intriguing duo whose combined talents as artist and promotor left an indelible mark on the history of twentieth-century art. Spot on: Amedeo Modigliani in an exciting joint catalogue

Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920) moved to Paris as a 22-year-old art student and is regarded as probably the last true bohémien in Montmartre. The exhibition catalogue to mark the 100th anniversary of his death shows him for the first time as a leading member of the avant-garde who carried the revolution of Primitivism well into the 20th century.

Modigliani’s famous nudes, unusual portraits and unique sculptures are contrasted with works by Pablo Picasso, Constantin Brâncusi and André Derain as well as artefacts from so-called “primitive” cultures. The first major survey on the graceful and colorful paintings of American artist Paul Resika.

This new monograph is the most comprehensive book on the work of Paul Resika (b. 1928) to date, highlighting his landscapes, portraits, and still lifes from the 1940s to the present. Resika's most important teacher was Hans Hofmann, with whom he studied on Cape Cod and in New York City in the mid-forties.

Resika's subjects are drawn from nature and reflect his surroundings, which change with the seasons: in winter, he lives in New York; in summer, Cape Cod; in spring he spends time painting in the south of France and in Italy. Province-town piers, fishing boats in the harbor, figures on the beach, and French farmhouses in the countryside emanate a dreamlike serenity and make up the rich visual vocabulary for which Resika is best known.

Marco Livingstone is an art historian, writer and independent curator who has written extensively on post-war painting and sculpture, particularly on Pop Art and figurative painting. His many publications include books and museum catalogues on David Hockney, Patrick Caulfield, R.B. Kitaj, Allen Jones, Clive Barker, Paula Rego, Peter Kinley, Adrian Berg, Duane Michals, Jim Dine, Tom Wesselmann, George Segal, Duane Hanson and Caroline Walker. Livingstone’s Hockney’s Portraits and People won the Sir Banister Fletcher Award for best book on the arts, and his other publications include Pop Art: A Continuing History, David Hockney and The Essential Duane Michals, all published by Thames & Hudson.

Robert Storr, the preeminent art critic, artist, curator, and educator, is the former Dean of Yale School of Art and senior curator in the Department of Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. He was the first American to be visual arts director of the Venice Biennale and has been researching and writing on Philip Guston for more than three decades.
