Twilight chronicles the art of photographer Gregory Crewdson’s gallery exhibitions of his fantastic, creative images.

“Crewdson is at the forefront of a movement in contemporary photography that has abandoned realism in pursuit of pure cinematic fantasy.”—New York Times Magazine

Twilight: in that zone between the certainty of day and fear of the dark, Gregory Crewdson sets his eerie, enigmatic photographs. A woman floats in her flooded living room; a cow appears to have fallen from the sky onto a front lawn; a gang of teenagers, seemingly hypnotized, pile up household objects for a bonfire. Created as elaborately staged tableaux, this series of images suggests the bizarre yet beautiful surrealities behind deceptively familiar suburban facades.

Including both production stills and the 40 finished images, all in full color, this volume features an essay by Pushcart Prize–winning author Rick Moody, a novelist equally renowned for exposing the underbelly of small-town, middle-class America.

_____________

Crewdson's most recent series of photographs, Twilight, are created as elaborately constructed film stills, catching the mysterious moment of time between before and after, revealing unknowable or unimaginable aspects of domestic reality.

A cow lies on its back on the lawn between two houses while firemen secure the area and a man searches the sky. Could the cow have rained down from above? In another image stacks and stacks of inedible slices of bread - bearing an odd resemblance to the mysterious monoliths at Stonehenge - are watched over by a gathering of birds. Both entirely foreign and oddly familiar, these images are carefully orchestrated events that challenge our very notions of familiarity, undermining our sense of certainty. These eerie and evocative photographs pair beauty with horror, obsession with disgust, and the real with the surreal, suggesting narratives open to endless interpretations. The book includes an essay written by fiction writer Rick Moody.

The book and exhibitions are comprised of the forty images from his Twilight series which was begun in 1998 - these exhibitions and this book chronicle the completion of the series and mark the first time it will be seen in its entirety.

Crewdson's epic photographic trilogy -- a portrait of America a decade in the making

Over the past three decades, Gregory Crewdson has been fleshing out a portrait of middle America, an America gazing wide-eyed at the glimmers of a fading dream.

His cinematographically staged photos have pieced together the fragments of a twilight world tinged with numbness.

This book brings togetherthree bodies of work made between 2012 and 2022. Envisaged as a trilogy, they previde unique insight into a decade of creation and offer a comprehensive view of the universe that hasposited Gregory Crewdson as one ofthe major figures of photography.

This trilogy isintroduced by Fireflies, a pivotal series if one is to grasp the intimate undercurrents in Gregory Crewdson's artwork.

____________

Considered one of the greatest exponents of staged photography, Gregory Crewdson has drawn a portrait of middle America, enclosed in the intermediate spaces of modest-sized cities, an America with eyes wide open towards the lights of a dream in exhaustion, already exhausted, already dilapidated. His photographs, staged with the devices of the cinema, have assembled the fragments of a twilight world, populated by the neutral faces of its protagonists, frozen like ruins that ignore themselves in a present cracked by the oracular manifestations of imperceptible decompositions.

This book brings together for the first time the trilogy conceived between 2012 and 2022. It unfolds an unprecedented vision of a decade of creation and reveals the intimate and political sides of the universe that has established Gregory Crewdson as one of photography’s major figures. Cathedral of the Pines and An Eclipse of Moths vibrate with an intimacy crystallized by places deeply connected to the life of the photographer, his partner and collaborator Juliane Hiam and their children. At the same time, these two series shift towards a political dimension which finds its most subtle expression in the black and white photographs of Eveningside which close the trilogy in 2022. To this trilogy is added the Fireflies series, produced in 1996, which is essential for capturing the intimate movements that operate in his art.

Best known for his elaborately choreographed, large-scale photographs, Gregory Crewdson is one of the most exciting and important artists working today.

The images that comprise Crewdson’s new series, “Beneath the Roses,” take place in the homes, streets, and forests of unnamed small towns. The photographs portray emotionally charged moments of seemingly ordinary individuals caught in ambiguous and often disquieting circumstances. Both epic in scale and intimate in scope, these visually breathtaking photographs blur the distinctions between cinema and photography, reality and fantasy, what has happened and what is to come.

Beneath the Roses features an essay by acclaimed fiction writer Russell Banks, as well as many never-before-seen photographs, including production stills, lighting charts, sketches, and architectural plans, that serve as a window into Crewdson’s working process.

The book is published to coincide with exhibitions in New York, London, and Los Angeles.

Alone Street brings together two major bodies of work by Gregory CrewdsonCathedral of the Pines (Aperture, 2016) and An Eclipse of Moths (Aperture, 2020), in a single, elegant, and affordable monograph.

Both series expand on the artist’s obsessive exploration of the psychogeography of small-town, post-industrial New England and underscore the precision and depth of Crewdson’s unique mode of photographic storytelling. In each image, light, color, and carefully crafted scenography evoke the feeling that, as art historian Alexander Nemerov has astutely described, “all that ever happened in these places seems crystallized in his tableaux, as if the quiet melancholy of Crewdson’s scenes gathered the unruly sorrows and other little-guessed feelings of people long-gone who once stood on those spots.”

In addition to the full set of images from each series, Alone Street, presents a selection of behind-the-scenes images and storyboards, revealing the extensive preparation and planning that went into the making of each work.
