An expanded and revised edition of this elegant and definitive volume, which helped establish the ever-growing passion for American Impressionism.

With brilliant scholarship and a wealth of stunning illustrations, American Impressionism provides a vivid summary of the entire art movement, starting with its roots in earlier American art and its relationship to French Impressionism. The first edition was quickly recognized as the most authoritative and penetrating account of the movement, which has continued to grow in popularity since the book's debut. For this new edition, which features 25 additional illustrations, Professor Gerdts has added a fascinating new chapter on Impressionist themes. The volume also includes a thoroughly updated bibliography.

American Impressionism tells how the movement progressed from an avant-garde aesthetic assaulted by critics up to its years of triumph and how the movement developed in diverse ways throughout the country including regional Impressionism in the South, Midwest, and West. All of the masterworks are here, from Childe Hassam's sun-drenched gardens to John Twachtmans snow-silenced landscapes, from Edmund Tarbell's coolly elegant ladies in dim, luxurious interiors to Frederick Friesekes sun-dappled nudes.

This lavishly illustrated book examines the profound influence of Japanese prints on the Impressionists and their American contemporaries.

Richly illustrated throughout, this elegant volume introduces two hundred years of Japanese prints and examines their evolution, innovative techniques, and radical impact on the European and American avant-garde of the nineteenth century. The book commences with a chronological survey of the Japanese print, including works from early masters such as Harunobu and Utamaro, classic prints by the renowned artists Hokusai and Hiroshige, and nineteenth-century examples by Kunisada and Kuniyoshi. The second half of the book focuses on Western artists such as Pierre Bonnard, Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Henri Rivière, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and James Abbott McNeill Whistler, who drew on the Japanese aesthetic in their own diverse ways. The result is a beautiful book that offers a fascinating glimpse of how the great Japanese prints affected modern art, from Impressionism and beyond.

This book tells the story of the beloved Impressionist movement, focusing on the tumultuous period of the 1860s and1870s and the emergence of the “New Painting” out of the Paris Salon.

Lavish reproductions of masterpieces of French painting - from the monumental canvases of Bouguereau to the landscapes and peasant scenes of Millet and Courbet - set the stage for a rich visual narrative that recounts the incubation and evolution of the Impressionist movement. The range of subject matter and techniques reflects the stylistic diversity of the artists who were part of this revolution. Drawn from the incomparable holdings of Paris’s Musée d’Orsay, the stunning publication includes paintings by Manet, Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Cézanne, Morisot, and Degas, among others. The paintings have been selected and thematically grouped to prompt discussion of Impressionism’s many facets, including France’s turbulent social and political climate at the time, the state-run Salon system and the artistic rivalries it fostered, and aspects of daily life during the Belle Epoque. This companion volume to a major exhibition offers a quintessential collection of Impressionist jewels that will delight all lovers of art.

Master of the Sublime. The essential Impressionist

Along with Turner, no artist has sought more than Claude Monet (1840-1926) to capture light itself on canvas. Of all the Impressionists, it was the man Cézanne called "only an eye, but my God what an eye!" who stayed completely true to the principle of absolute fidelity to the visual sensation, painting directly from the object.

It could be said that Monet reinvented the possibilities of colour, and whether it was through his early interest in Japanese prints, his time in the dazzling light of Algeria as a conscript or his personal acquaintance with the major painters of the late 1800s, what Monet produced throughout his long life would change forever the way we perceive both the natural world and its attendant phenomena. The high point of his explorations were the late series of waterlilies, painted in his own garden at Giverny, that, in their moves towards almost total formlessness, are really the origin of abstract art.

This biography does full justice to this most remarkable and profoundly influential of artists and offers numerous reproductions and archive photos alongside a detailed and insightful commentary.

While Impressionism marked the first steps toward modern painting by revolutionising an artistic medium stifled by academic conventions, Post-Impressionism, even more revolutionary, completely liberated colour and opened it to new, unknown horizons. Anchored in his epoch, relying on the new chromatic studies of Michel Eugène Chevreul, Georges Seurat transcribed the chemist’s theory of colours into tiny points that created an entire image. With his heavy strokes,Van Gogh illustrated the midday sun, while Cézanne renounced perspective. Rich in its variety and in the singularity of its artists, Post-Impressionism was a passage taken by all the well-known figures of 20th century painting, and which is here presented, for the great pleasure of the reader, by Nathalia Brodskaïa.

About the author:
Nathalia Brodskaïa is a curator at the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. She has published monographs on Rousseau, Renoir, Derain, Vlaminck, and Van Dongen, as well as many books on the Fauves and Naïve Art. “I paint what I see and not what it pleases others to see.” What other words than these of Édouard Manet, seemingly so different from the sentiments of Monet or Renoir, could best define the movement of Impressionism? Without a doubt this singularity was explained when, shortly before his death, Claude Monet wrote: “I remain sorry to have been the cause of the name given to a group the majority of which did not have anything
Impressionist.” In this work, Nathalia Brodskaïa examines the contradictions of this late 19th-century movement through the paradox of a group who, while forming a coherent ensemble, favoured the affirmation of artistic individuals.

Between academic art and the birth of modern, non-figurative painting, the road to recognition was long. Analysing the founding elements of the movement, the author follows, through the works of each of the artists, how the demand for individuality gave rise to modern painting.

Almost twenty years after the creation of the Musee d’Orsay, the 19th century seems more than ever to be the “Golden Age” of French art. It boasts names such as Ingres and Delacroix, Manet and Puvis de Chavannes, Gustave Eiffel and Charles Garnier. French art became a universally accepted benchmark, spreading the discoveries of Impressionism, the Haussmann models, and the daring of art nouveau far beyond its borders, and receiving in return, in the form of the countless artists who flocked to its hub, numerous influences from abroad. Other key movements associated with the19th century include Romanticism; Neo-Classicism, “orientalism,” and japonisme; Realism; the Barbizon School and plein-air painting; Neo-Impression, Cloissonism, and the Nabis; and Symbolism. This complete, chronological history is illustrated by more than 400 illustrations and covers painting, sculpture, and architecture, as well as the advent of photography, its impact on painting, and its emergence as an art form of its own.

Henri Loyrette, president director of the Louvre Museum, was previously director of the Musee d’Orsay (1994). Loyrette has published articles and books on 19-century art and has presided over many exhibitions focusing on the Impressionistst. Sebastien Allard is Heritage Curator in the Painting Department at the Louvre. Allard has also published a book on Paris in 1820. Laurence des Cars is curator at the Musee d’Orsay. A celebration of the Impressionists artists, including Monet, Renoir and Pissarro, whose paintings are inextricably linked to the birth of modern art.

Today, our passion for these artists remains, and their paintings are amongst the best-loved works in the history of art. By choosing to paint extraordinary pictures of modernity that shocked the bourgeois elite, the Impressionists challenged the academic ideals of the French Salons, rejected the past and embracing colour to portray a sense of joie de vivre. Their revolutionary use of colour, free brushstrokes and modern subject matter, painted en plain air gave rise to one of the most important and influential art movements of the nineteenth century.

Featuring many of the most famous and important pieces by the groups’ key figures, this beautifully illustrated reference book also includes a collection of less well-known but equally important works to show the diversity of this exceptional movement.

Impression… who better than Monet in 1867, could have defined what was to become the most well-known and beloved pictorial movement? Nevertheless, it took more than thirty years for these artists (Manet, Monet, Pissarro, Renoir…) to be accepted and acknowleged by their contemporaries. Impressionism was the first step towards modern painting, and it revolutionned an artistic background suffocated by academic norms.
Taking the Impressionistic revolution even further, Post-impressionism was to completely liberate the colour and revealed unknown horizons (with Seurat, Van Gogh, Cézanne,…) which became unmissable passages for the greatest names of 20th century painting (Picasso, Matisse, Kandinsky…)

You will rediscover, along the pages of this book, the freshness, the colours and the quality of these timeless masterworks.

The history of Impressionism, including its forerunners, the great masters, and the representatives of Neo-Impressionism and Pointillism, is closely traced in this publication by exploring the Wallraf’s unparalleled collection.

The Wallraf-Richartz-Museum & Fondation Corboud—“Wallraf” for short—is Cologne’s oldest museum and one of Germany’s great picture galleries, boasting one of the most important accumulations of Western art—from the Middle Ages through to the early twentieth century—in Germany. In fact, the museum’s collection of Impressionist paintings is the largest in the country, not least because of the Fondation Corboud’s contributions, which in 2001 became part of the Wallraf when they were donated by the Swiss collector Gérard J. Corboud.

The Impressionist treasures among the Wallraf’s collection are presented here for the first time in a splendid, richly-illustrated volume. Monet, Renoir, Sisley, and the works of many other great masters are the focus of this book, providing a feast for the eyes on a tour of the history of art from 1874 through to 1926.
