About the Author

Cindi Cook is a writer and publisher whose publications have appeared in The New York Times, The Huffington Post, Women’s Wear Daily, Tatler, Interior Design, Hamptons, Hampton’s Country, Allure, Conde Nast Traveler, The New York Post, and NYLON, as well as Manhattan File, TheHUB Detroit, and TheHUB Flint.

She directs the editorial production company CCC, was previously editor at New York Cottages & Gardens and their sister magazine Hamptons Cottages & Gardens and editor-in-chief of Hamptons. She has spent over two decades working in a variety of publishing industries, including the creation of six local and national magazines. She is currently writing the children’s book Josephine and the Yellow Umbrella and is working on a stage play. In addition, Cook has given lectures on working and career issues at Temple University, F.I.T., and the Woodhull Institute for Ethical Leadership. She lives between Paris and Detroit.

The contemporary architecture of Japan has long been among the most inventive in the world, recognized for sustainability and infinite creativity. No fewer than seven Japanese architects have won the Pritzker Prize.

Since Osaka World Expo ’70 brought contemporary forms center stage, Japan has been a key player in global architecture. With his intentionally limited vocabulary of geometric forms, Tadao Ando has since then put Japanese building on the world’s cultural map, establishing a bridge between East and West. In the wake of Ando’s mostly concrete buildings, figures like Kengo Kuma (Japan National Stadium intended for the Olympic Games, originally planned for 2020), Shigeru Ban (Mount Fuji World Heritage Center), and Kazuyo Sejima (Kanazawa Museum of 21st Century Art of Contemporary Art) pioneered a more sustainable approach. Younger generations have successfully developed new directions in Japanese architecture that are in harmony with nature and connected to traditional building. Rather than planning on the drawing board, the architects presented in this collection stand out for their endless search for forms, truly reacting on their environment.

Traditional country parks, which originated in the United Kingdom, are very different to the country parks we know today. With the development of urbanisation and the improvement of living standards, city dwellers were no longer satisfied with small urban green spaces, and a new style of country park was born. About the Author:

Luis Paulo Faria Ribeiro is a professor at the School of Agriculture/University of Lisbon and has twice served as the chairman of the Department of Landscape Architecture (1999-2001; 2004-2006). He is currently the director of the Master's Degree in Landscape Architecture at Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA)/Technical University of Lisbon (UTL) and is a member of the scientific board of the doctoral program in Landscape Architecture at LYNK/ISA/UTL. A landscape architect, he is a graduate of ISA/UTL (1993), and has a PhD in Regional Planning from the University of Massachusetts (1997) under the Luso-American Foundation grant. He is a founding partner and an Executive Director of Topiaris Landscape Architecture, a professional consulting firm comprised of landscape architects and planners with an office in Lisbon, Portugal. Under his direction Topiaris has received several national awards, and his work, and the work of Topiaris, has been published nationally and internationally.
