About the Authors:

Louisa Pierce and Emily Ward met in 2012 and instantly knew they were kindred spirits. Soon after, they moved to Nashville and formed Pierce & Ward. Neither had formal interior design training; their friend Karen Elson was their first client. Their clients include Emma Roberts, Sam and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Colin Hanks, and Lily Aldridge and Caleb Followill of Kings of Leon. Emily lives in Los Angeles with her partner, Giovanni Ribisi, and their twins. Louisa lives in Nashville with her husband, Austin Scaggs, and their two children.

Beatrice Monti della Corte ran Galleria dell'Ariete, a trailblazing art gallery in Milan in the 1950s and is the founder of the Santa Maddalena Foundation, which administers the Premio Gregor von Rezzori and the eponymous writers' retreat. François Halard is one of the most important interior and architectural photographers and has been published in Vogue, Apartamento, T Magazine, and Cabana, among others. Michael Cunningham is the author of A Home at the End of the World, Flesh and Blood, The Hours (winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award and the Pulitzer Prize), Specimen Days, By Nightfall, The Snow Queen, and Land's End: A Walk in Provincetown.

Sir William Chambers (1722–96) was a Swedish-British architect with an unusual track record. He designed imaginative castle buildings and luxurious interiors as well as simple and rational utilitarian architecture. After growing up in Sweden, he worked mostly in England, where he became a favorite of King George III. But throughout his life he emphasized his Swedish background and also designed buildings in Sweden. A Treatise on Civil Architecture is a handbook in architecture, where Chambers wanted to explain the basics of the art of building in a pedagogical way. Even today it serves as an excellent guide to the secrets of classical architecture with concise texts and beautiful plates with both details and overviews of different building types and their functions.

About the Authors:

Frank Salmon is Associate Professor of the History of Art at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of St John's College, Cambridge. Since 2021 he has been Director of the Ax:son Johnson Centre for the Study of Classical Architecture at Cambridge. He is an architectural historian specialising in British and European architecture of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Among his many publications are the book Building on Ruins: The Rediscovery of Rome and English Architecture.

Clive Aslet is an award-winning architectural historian and journalist. During a long association with Country Life, he was editor for 13 years. As author of The Edwardian Country House, The American Country House, Landmarks of Britain and Villages of Britain, he is an authority on the countryside, British history and architecture, and life at the turn of the twentieth century on both sides of the Atlantic. A lifelong advocate of Classicism, he helped establish the Ax:son Johnson Centre for the Study of Classical Architecture at Cambridge in 2021.

David Adjaye, the son of a Tanzanian diplomat, spent his childhood moving between international cities before settling in London, where he was educated. Fresh out of the Royal Academy of Art, his early commissions reflected an influential generation of artists at the turn of the millennium with whom he shared a range of sensibilities. His artistic sensitivity, deft use of space and inexpensive, unexpected materials resulted in a number of iconic projects.

With the hindsight of almost twenty years of practice and a raft of high-profile projects around the world – perhaps best symbolized by his National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. – the significance of Adjaye’s earlier projects is clear. Never shying away from a challenge, Adjaye used his first projects as testbeds for what would become his unique, acclaimed and highly sought-after brand of ‘critical regionalism’.

This monograph presents the first projects of Adjaye’s corpus, many little documented. From London’s West End to Brooklyn, clever urban interventions and pavilions to private houses for artists and public buildings for the many. These early projects, brought together and presented with new analyses and recently uncovered archival material, testify to the originality of an architect at the height of his talents who is changing the face of our built world.

Following on from Adjaye – Works: Houses, Pavilions, Installations, Buildings, 1995–2007, published by Thames & Hudson in 2020, this book covers the impressive portfolio of work created by the architect between 2007 and 2015. During the years covered in this book, David Adjaye became interested in developing an architecture that was more expansive, taking him outside Europe to work on major projects such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver and the Moscow School of Management Skolkovo. Designing buildings around the globe, including two projects connected with the post-Katrina reconstruction programme in New Orleans, Adjaye carefully tailored his approach to each place, sensitive to the important role architecture plays in affirming a sense of community and identity.
