A comprehensive overview of Southern California’s most experimental architecture, showcasing the highly expressive work of famed architects such as Frank Gehry and Thom Mayne, as well as the best of the new guard.

This is the first critical examination and history of what was first identified as the "L.A. School" in the 1990s, which has influenced much of American architecture in the last twenty-five years. This expansive new book examines contemporary Southern California architecture from 1987 to the present, exploring its experimental nature, sculptural tendency, and exciting evolution.

This volume complements a major exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and is part of the Getty Research Institute exhibition initiative "Los Angeles Architecture, 1940–1990." Contributions by leading architectural historians coupled with a stunning collection of images present recent works in terms of sculpturalism and urbanism, and consider the impact of the history and environment of Los Angeles, as well as the creative and working processes.

About the Author

Christopher Mount is a freelance curator and professor of design history and theory at California Institute of Arts as well as the Otis College of Art and Design. Jeffrey Deitch is the director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

Nick Mele, Ruthie Summers
ID: 17094
Видавництво: Vendome Press

An intimate love letter to summertime in Newport, Rhode Island, from photographer Nick Mele, the “modern-day Slim Aarons,” and interior designer Ruthie Sommers.

Newport, Rhode Island, is one of the last bastions of American high society. The grand Gilded Age houses that top its oceanside cliffs and line storied Bellevue Avenue are largely untouched by contemporary renovation and taste, and family heirlooms are passed down from generation to generation with Yankee thrift. Indeed, Newport has an understated elegance that sets it apart from other resort towns.

Life behind the facades of these elaborate mansions is rarely revealed, but now, photographer Nick Mele and author Ruthie Sommers, both lifelong Newport residents, share their entrée into the parties, lawn tennis matches, beach clambakes, and family gatherings that make up the glorious days of a Newport summer. Picture the foggy mornings of June, the traditional yacht races of July, the annual meeting of old friends at Marble House in August, and the melancholy close of the season after Labor Day. Through Sommers’s personal, evocative text and Mele’s exquisite photographs of people, parties, beaches, and houses, the intimate charms of A Newport Summer come poignantly to life.

About the Author:

Nick Mele is a lifestyle, fashion, commercial, and interiors photographer who Veranda magazine called “a modern-day Slim Aarons.” His work has been featured in many print and online publications, including Town & Country, the New York Times, Avenue, Quest, Architectural Digest, Vogue, and Vanity Fair. Among his commercial clients are Ralph Lauren, Sam Edelman, J. McLaughlin, and Lilly Pulitzer. Mele grew up in Edith Wharton’s Newport house and divides his time between Newport in the summer and Palm Beach in the winter. Ruthie Sommers is an interior designer and painter. Her work has appeared in Town & Country, Veranda, House Beautiful, Architectural Digest, and many other publications. She splits her time between Aspen, Colorado; Goleta, California; and Newport, where she spends every summer.

Видавництво: Rizzoli

For this ode to summer living, noted designer and author Tricia Foley discusses how to create airy and relaxed homes, which capture the essence of the seaside.

A Summer Place reflects the natural charm, understated beauty, and sophistication of the properties of notable tastemakers of Long Island's idyllic seaside community of Bellport-Brookhaven, where Foley resides. This beautifully photographed collection of homes offers inspirational ideas for making your home a personal sanctuary. Featured are modern residences by the sea designed around their water views, nineteenth-century shingle-style cottages that have been restored for today's living, and artist retreats filled with color, pattern, and unique style. Many of these houses, with their screened porches, handcrafted outbuildings, and summer gardens have ideas that translate to seaside living anywhere. Some are decorated with subtle hues of sky blue, white floorboards, and comfortable rustic or contemporary furnishings. The grounds vary from manicured lawns that roll down to the sea to wild landscapes of seagrass, and lovely pergolas dripping with wisteria to working cutting gardens. With sections on summer decorating style, casual outdoor entertaining, seasonal flowers, and weekend guest tips, this book shares several ways to enjoy summer living at home.

Author Louisa Pierce and Emily Ward and Catherine Pierce
ID: 14086
Видавництво: Rizzoli

The whimsical, layered, incredibly chic, and livable interiors and the fresh and original insights of the coolest design duo fill every page of this treasure chest of a debut interiors book.

Every Pierce & Ward home tells a story. Emily and Louisa believe that there is a beauty in the unfolding of a room that takes the eye dancing from one piece to the next, swirling over velvets of peach and gold, gliding over glass and marble, and stopping to take in the homeowner's precious sentimental favorites. As the designers for such Hollywood powerhouses, supermodels, and rock stars as Brie Larson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Dakota Johnson, Kate Hudson, and Karen Elson, Pierce & Ward artfully blend classic elements and fanciful touches, creating an irresistible kaleidoscope of patterns, textures, art, and objects.

Stately striped wallpaper mixes with French florals. Brass-lion bookends sit beside trays inlaid with glinting mother-of-pearl. Milk-glass globes hang down hallways like glowing moons to guide one's path. Humble finds from eBay and lovingly worn textiles mix with museum-quality art and family photos. This book will teach readers about organized abundance and un-gaudy decadence, with a dash of restraint for good measure: it's an evocative and inspiring ode to the art of more.

About the Authors:

Louisa Pierce and Emily Ward met in 2012 and instantly knew they were kindred spirits. Soon after, they moved to Nashville and formed Pierce & Ward. Neither had formal interior design training; their friend Karen Elson was their first client. Their clients include Emma Roberts, Sam and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Colin Hanks, and Lily Aldridge and Caleb Followill of Kings of Leon. Emily lives in Los Angeles with her partner, Giovanni Ribisi, and their twins. Louisa lives in Nashville with her husband, Austin Scaggs, and their two children.

William Chambers, Frank Salmon, Clive Aslet

Sir William Chambers (1722–96) was a Swedish-British architect with an unusual track record. He designed imaginative castle buildings and luxurious interiors as well as simple and rational utilitarian architecture. After growing up in Sweden, he worked mostly in England, where he became a favorite of King George III. But throughout his life he emphasized his Swedish background and also designed buildings in Sweden. A Treatise on Civil Architecture is a handbook in architecture, where Chambers wanted to explain the basics of the art of building in a pedagogical way. Even today it serves as an excellent guide to the secrets of classical architecture with concise texts and beautiful plates with both details and overviews of different building types and their functions.

About the Authors:

Frank Salmon is Associate Professor of the History of Art at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of St John's College, Cambridge. Since 2021 he has been Director of the Ax:son Johnson Centre for the Study of Classical Architecture at Cambridge. He is an architectural historian specialising in British and European architecture of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Among his many publications are the book Building on Ruins: The Rediscovery of Rome and English Architecture.

Clive Aslet is an award-winning architectural historian and journalist. During a long association with Country Life, he was editor for 13 years. As author of The Edwardian Country House, The American Country House, Landmarks of Britain and Villages of Britain, he is an authority on the countryside, British history and architecture, and life at the turn of the twentieth century on both sides of the Atlantic. A lifelong advocate of Classicism, he helped establish the Ax:son Johnson Centre for the Study of Classical Architecture at Cambridge in 2021.

Charlotte Horton, Photographs by Michael Woolley
ID: 16079
Видавництво: Rizzoli

The fascinating story behind the revival of an ancient Italian castle and its enduring way of life.

When Charlotte Horton and her family of British bohemians discovered an abandoned Tuscan castle, little did they know that they would transform it into a vibrant, modern locale. Nestled in the rugged terrain of Mount Amiata, Castello di Potentino was a dilapidated mess: roofs had collapsed and there was no plumbing or electricity. Following the arduous process of purchasing it from 24 different owners, they set to work renovating the 11th-century structure.

In this enthralling account of ravamping the castello into a contemporary ode to Italian tradition, photographs by the late British fashion photographer Michael Woolley showcase the property, while Charlotte’s text dives into the renovation and life at Potentino. From a dramatic vaulted entrance hall to a starry ceiling mural, the interiors are bound to delight. Readers also learn about technical details, such as recycling materials, painting, and bureaucratic paperwork. A chapter dedicated to the land — complete with a vineyard and olive groves — displays Charlotte’s philosophy of self-sufficiency. This book is a must-have for those interested in Italian architecture and the Tuscan lifestyle, or anyone with the dream of restoring a castle in Tuscany.

About the Author:

Charlotte Horton has been living at and restoring Potentino since 2000. She worked for Vogue magazine, Secker and Warburg Publishing House, and as a freelance journalist. Michael Woolley was a British photographer who taught at the Kingston School of Art’s prestigious Fashion Design BA course. Marella Caracciolo Chia is a journalist for Architectural Digest, the New York Times, and T Magazine, among other publications.

Richard Keith Langham and Sara Ruffin Costello, Photographs by Trel Brock
ID: 16327
Видавництво: Rizzoli

This first book on the esteemed decorator and tastemaker, known for beautiful interiors that are replete with tradition, saturated color, elegance, and Southern flair, will inspire and delight readers.

Richard Keith Langham’s all-American interiors unite a traditional approach with dashes of whimsy, beautiful tailoring, and an exuberant color palette. In this book, Langham charms and inspires with a selection of city and country projects — waterside estates on Maryland’s Eastern Shore and Florida’s Jupiter Island, gracious country houses in Pennsylvania and Connecticut, a grand townhouse in New Orleans, and city residences in New York, Washington, D.C., and Memphis. Langham conjures his own brand of design magic by approaching his clients’ rooms with the rigors of classicism, paired with an innate Southern predilection for pared-down elegance. Signature touches include custom-painted murals, curious antiques, and couture fabrics — motifs that are uniquely Langham’s but that also echo his early influences from working with design legends Mark Hampton and Keith Irvine.

Langham has decorated for a glamorous clientele, including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Pat Buckley, and Hilary Swank. This volume presents his captivating, lush interiors — classic American with a vibrant and pattern-friendly flair—that will inspire design aficionados and fellow interior designers.

About the Authors:
