Focuses specifically and in depth on the structural designs of Carlo Scarpa's architectural designs

In Carlo Scarpa’s work (Venice, Italy, 1906 – Sendai, Japan, 1978), architectural design is primarily based on the structural constraints he sets himself. The structure is the object of the design, and it takes on a singular expressiveness. The structure is very present, in subtle and sometimes unusual ways.

Numerous studies have been produced on the works of Carlo Scarpa, but none has focused specifically and in depth on the structural design of his projects. Yet, the definition of the structure is specific to each of his projects and to each situation within the project. For Scarpa, each structural decision is a subtle and very precise story that defines the project and gives it its identity.

In the course of this study, structure will be examined in several of Carlo Scarpa’s works in order to highlight the significant use he made of it in each project and to demonstrate the poetic element contained within.

There are the influential figures from her past, including: her grandmother, who sewed beautifully and ran a successful shop; her mother, who taught her that women need clothes to suit the many roles they have to play; her mentor, Oscar de la Renta, from whom she learned the fashion business. Roehm tells the story of launching, running, and ultimately closing her own fashion line, and her subsequent reinvention through books, gardening, entertaining, and décor. The design revolutions of the early 20th century were woven into the very fabric of the carpets and rugs of that era. Carpets of the Art Deco Era, previously published as 'Art Deco and Modernist Carpets' and now reissued in PLC, is the most in-depth history on the subject.

It charts the evolution of carpet design out of the floral effusions of the Victorian salons and into the angular elegance of Art Deco and bold abstraction of Modernism popularized by the machine age. Such artists and designers as Picasso, Poiret, Gray, Delaunay, Matisse, Klee, and many more advanced the designs going on underfoot, making these rugs extremely collectible artworks in their own right.

Susan Day was Chief Librarian at the Institut Français d’Architecture for 23 years, and has acted as Scientific Advisor for the Louvre and Les Arts Décoratifs Museum.

A celebration of the uniquely vibrant architecture and interiors of classic and new Spanish-style houses in the southwestern and southern United States, Mexico, and Spain. Casa Bohemia showcases a collection of some of the most beautifully preserved Spanish-style houses, from restored haciendas in Mexico to early and recent 20th-century California mission styles.

Twenty-nine residences built between the late seventeenth century and the present day are featured in new, stunning color photography that captures architectural details inside and out and enchanting Spanish, Moorish, European and Mexican antique furnishings, artifacts, and crafts. Author Linda Leigh Paul traces the history of Spanish style architecture from its Iberian sources to the development of the Mission style in the Americas to the still-flourishing Spanish Revival and Mediterranean styles, and endlessly rich details, including ornate wrought-iron, wood balconies, crafted glass, colorful tiles and textiles, and graceful arches. But what all of the houses featured in Casa Bohemia have in common — though they range across centuries and places as diverse as San Miguel de Allende, Santa Barbara, San Francisco, Hollywood, Malibu, Texas, and Wyoming — is a visual richness and vitality that emerges from the distinctive approaches to preservation and decoration found in each.

About the Author:

Linda Leigh Paul is the author of many books, including Cottage and Cabin, Cottages by the Sea, Coastal Retreats, Desert Retreats, Cottages on the Coast, The Cabin Book, Island Living, Lakeside Living and Wine Country Living.

Presented here are houses to dream of and dream in — a luminous celebration of the finest examples of the Santa Fe Style from the eighteenth century to today, in this high-desert mecca of artists, craftspeople, artisans, and designers.

Desert hues, natural materials, thick hand-plastered walls, and adobe brick construction are hallmarks of the Santa Fe Style, which is as much an expression in architecture, interior design, art, and crafts as it is a way of life. Rooted in a sense of earthy comfort inspired by its history, the surrounding desert, and Native American and Hispanic design influences, the style has a timeless appeal and vibrant ongoing life that has resulted in these extraordinary homes.

With features such as eighteenth-century peeled vigas, tin chandeliers, romantic iron sconces, and hand-hewn wood-beamed ceilings, each house is a rich yet harmonious invitation that will engage the senses and speak to the soul. Beyond the houses, the writer and photographer spotlight those details and spaces that together convey the magic of this very special place, including patios and gardens; fireplaces, kivas, and hornos; ceramics; Native American arts; cabinets and trasteros; folk art; and weaving.

Casa Santa Fe is the definitive sourcebook for architects, designers, builders, homeowners, and interior decorators seeking to expand their visual repertoire of historically defined and classically inspired architectural details and interior appointments.

About the Author:

Casa Wabi,

The story of the French cashmere shawls of the 19th century and their rise to the heights of fashion. This treasure-trove will not only delight textile scholars and costume historians but is sure to appeal to anyone who loves gorgeous accessories

The delicate beauty of the cashmere shawl was first brought to Europe by the East India Companies and Napoleon’s campaigns. Woven in Kashmir, its fabric was so light that, according to legend, a whole shawl could be passed through a finger-ring. By the 19th century, these shawls were highly sought-after in France; French manufacturers soon saw that there was a market for more accessibly priced versions and started to create their own.

Monique Lévi-Strauss has spent more than thirty years collecting and studying these shawls and gathering rare documents to preserve their history. This completely revised, expanded and redesigned edition of her classic book on the subject illustrates nearly 300 of these beautiful items, superbly photographed to showcase their splendid original designs, alongside a wealth of archive material and contemporary paintings that show them being worn by their elegant owners.

A fascinating biographical monograph of Charles J. Stick, the Virginia-based landscape architect renowned for his historically and culturally based gardens filled with luxuriant blooms

Charles Stick lives and works in the Piedmont region of Virginia, a land of rolling hills and dramatic vistas filled with echoes of the early history of America. Stick draws on all of this in his designs, which refer back to the classical designs of Thomas Jefferson at Monticello and the University of Virginia.

Stick focuses on residential gardens, drawing on the principles of Palladio, Charles A. Platt, and Russell Page to connect the architecture to the land and develop enticing pathways between the formal planting and the landscape beyond.

This new book is the first to explore and bring together four major estates—Crab Tree Farm on the North Shore of Chicago, Illinois; Mount Sharon near Charlottesville, Virginia; Sleepy Cat Farm in Greenwich, Connecticut; and Waverley, a previously unpublished farm in Central Virginia — offering new insights into the design process and the intimacy of his client relationships. Ten featured smaller gardens also demonstrate the breadth of Stick’s creative response to topography and climate.

The book’s glamorous package includes lush garden imagery from noted photographers, including Roger Foley and T.S. Elliott, together with Stick’s elegant pencil renderings and plans. Featuring gardens in prominent communities across the United States, including Isleboro, Greenwich, Southampton, Jupiter Island, Winnetka, and Dallas, as well as Stick’s home base in Virginia, and first-person commentary from Stick giving a unique personal dimension to the work, this volume is perfect for all garden enthusiasts and horticulturalists.

The celebrated designer’s latest book, devoted to gleaning design inspiration from the personal scrapbooks and notebooks of great women of style — including her own. Interior designer Charlotte Moss has spent years collecting as well as creating scrapbooks — a pastime both meditative and instructive about her own ideas regarding design and style. In this unique book, Moss brings together her own scrapbooks along with those of notable women, both contemporary and historical, whose flair for style inspires us, including interior designer Elsie de Wolfe and society doyenne Gloria Vanderbilt — all never before published. Organized by theme — home, garden, travel, entertaining, and fashion — each chapter includes examples of Moss’s signature style mingled with excerpts from the scrapbooks of these great women. From the ambassador’s wife and bon vivant Evangeline Bruce, we learn that she preferred accessorizing tabletops with simple florets of broccoli in biscuit tins. And from the iconic Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, we see her notes and menus from the legendary White House dinners she threw. One-piece (among many) of sage advice includes perfecting one extraordinary meal and serving it again and again, rather than experimenting endlessly.

About the Author:

A celebrated tastemaker, prolific designer, and author, Charlotte Moss most recently wrote the successful Charlotte Moss Decorates (Rizzoli, 2011). Deeda Blair is a philanthropist. Pamela Fiori is a celebrated magazine editor who has helmed Town & Country as well as Travel & Leisure. Alexa Hampton is the president and owner of Mark Hampton LLC. Candy Pratts Price is the editor at large for Vogue.com. Deborah Needleman is the editor-in-chief of the Wall Street Journal Magazine.
