John Phifer Marrs

Видавництво: Gibbs Smith Publishers

An expert interior designer presents a luxurious look at unique and beautiful ways to display collected objects -- from arranging in a cabinet to using an entire wing of a house.

John Marrs is an interior designer and purveyor of antiques. He helps clients build their collections and also designs walls, rooms, or wings in high-end homes to display the objects. This book is about the joy of collecting and the author's passion for displaying just about anything and everything in unique and beautiful ways. Told in entertaining stories and anecdotes, and lavishly photographed.

'I think everyone should collect something, I tell my clients. Some already do and some don't. Those who do seem to get the disease quite quickly and off we go! I have been so lucky to help in the acquisition of collections and in deciding how to edit and organize, and finally, to decorate rooms, wings, or whole houses with magnificent collections of just about anything and everything you can imagine.

About the Author

John Phifer Marrs is one of the premier interior designers of the South and is known for an elegant, fresh and inviting style that many call "The New Southern Style." His interiors reflect his southern roots and combine a sense of the past with comfort and convenience. Funny and irreverent, with a "Saturday Night Live" sense of humor, John has been very busy entertaining his A-list clients and creating magical interiors in Texas and throughout the rest of the United States. His projects include major residences, vacation homes, executive offices and even the official residence of a United States Ambassador.
His work has been featured in Texas Home and Living, Better Homes and Gardens, Southern Accents, Traditional Interiors, AD and more.

Interiors for Living is a book dedicated to show a graphic testimony of the different tendencies and trends of the best worldwide interior design and their most outstanding exponents, succeeding in reinventing different styles for its adaptation to the present ways of life, from Europe to Australia, from United States to Japan or from Latin America to Singapore. Interesting concepts are perceived from apparently insignificant details, carefully chosen materials for and on behalf of the client or even a project of global proportions which speaks for itself.

The surrounding architecture, or better said, the architectural environment into which they are integrated, is perceived in terms of an objective which evidently aspires to present itself as modern and contemporary architecture but which also circumscribes to the fact that the interiors presented here have also been created and designed for living.

Right through this book, we will see how interior architecture, furniture design, material selection, finishes, chosen accessories and warm and humane strokes, combined with simplicity and skill, are intentions that materialize in comfortable spaces that call for enjoyment, revelling in a ageless and appealing lifestyle to match the taste of each client.

Instagram @sabbeinteriordesign.

This fascinating exploration will appeal to anyone interested in art history, fashion and style, textile design and world history

The golden age of European navigation brought a breathtaking variety of textile designs to travel across the globe. These textiles blended the traditional designs, skills and tastes of the cultures that produced them with those of their destinations, resulting in objects that are both beautiful and historically intriguing.

While previous studies have focused on this story from the viewpoint of trade, Interwoven Globe is the first book to investigate it as a history of design — and to approach it from a universal perspective. Richly illustrated texts examine the interrelationship of textiles, commerce and taste from the Age of Discovery to the 19th century, providing detailed discussions of more than 120 works.

From India, with its renowned mastery of dyed-and-painted cotton, to the sumptuous silks of Japan and China, Turkey and Iran, the paths of influence are traced westward to Europe and the Americas. Shaped by an emerging worldwide visual culture, the fashion for the ‘exotic’ in textiles, as well as in other goods and art forms, gave rise to what can be called the first global style.

Isabel López-Quesada, one of Europe’s major interior designers, leads a tour through the two extraordinary homes she decorated for herself and her family

Innovatively combining period and contemporary furniture and art in a sophisticated mix, the homes of Isabel López-Quesada are inspirational and unforgettable. In At Home, the Spanish designer tells her own story. The perfect gift for admirers of her work, and an ideal introduction for those new to the designer.

López-Quesada is arguably the most significant European woman designer working today. The keyword in interior design today is authenticity: an original voice. And authenticity is the hallmark of López-Quesada’s work. She introduces her family and their traditions, and reveals her sources of inspiration—such as the work of earlier designers like Renzo Mongiardino and John Stefanidis. She relates how she transformed an abandoned wax factory in a leafy district of Madrid into her family home and atelier, and then recounts how she created a country home out of a run-down Basque farm in the hills outside of Biarritz, France.

Both the Madrid and Biarritz properties have been affectionately documented by Miguel Flores-Vianna, who has photographed interiors, patios, and gardens, as well as López-Quesada’s design studios. Lavishly illustrated with over 250 color photographs, At Home provides a window into Isabel López-Quesada’s design philosophy, and her fascination with creating beautiful spaces.

About the Author:

Isabel López-Quesada is a Spanish interior designer who has worked all over the world—throughout Spain and the Mediterranean, the United States, Japan, and the Caribbean. Miguel Flores-Vianna is an editor, writer, and photographer whose work is regularly published in T, Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, Cabana, Milieu, and Vogue, and featured in his book, Haute Bohemians.

A celebration of Henry Melich’s wonderfully whimsical and romantic island escapes, which continue to inspire the work of designers today.

Island Follies is the first book to explore the work of Henry Melich (1924–1999), a Czech-born architect who brought a beguiling form of neoclassicism to the Caribbean. While Melich built projects in the United States and England, he’s best remembered for the romantic houses he designed in sunny island retreats like Lyford Cay, Harbour Island, and Windermere Island in the Bahamas.

Melich created a romantic sense of escape with a softly cushioned whimsy and discrete air of tranquility. His signature motifs included faux-marbled walls, seasoned wood, colonnades, and tentlike interiors with striped ceilings. Melich’s interiors suited the playful mood of the moment documented in this book with the warm touch of Slim Aarons, who came to the Bahamas in the 1960s and 1970s to capture high-society figures in their homes. Gardens with bougainvillea-draped pergolas, ivy-clad alcoves, and palm-lined allées are just some of the features that extend the architecture into the tropical landscape and embrace the indoor-outdoor lifestyle of these houses.

Island Follies showcases the best of Melich’s island projects, with new photography of many previously unpublished interiors, capturing a lost world of glamour certain to inspire lovers of interior design and island retreats alike.

About the Author:

Alastair Gordon is an award-winning critic and author who has written regularly about architecture and design for many publications, including the New York Times, Vanity Fair, and Architectural Digest. He is cofounder and director of Gordon de Vries Studio. Chris Blackwell is the founder of Island Records.

Her airy, relaxed, indoor-outdoor aesthetic is apparent in every one of the twenty-five projects featured here.

With photographs by Tria Giovan, herself an island native, and charming illustrations by Aldous Bertram, who decorated Lindroth’s pied-à-terre in Palm Beach with stunning trompe l’oeil renderings, Island Hopping: Amanda Lindroth Design is the visual equivalent of an island getaway.

Celerie Kemble

A house by the sea should be a house of dreams. Where windows and doors are thrown open to the ocean, and gusts of cool, salty air turn us all into kids again -- buoyant and joyful.

Spending childhood days on the beach and in the magical, romantic chaos of her family's rambling house internationally renowned interior designer Celerie Kemble has a deep-rooted connection to the sun and surf. However, in the summer of 2004, Kemble laid eyes on a wild swath of jungle in the Dominican Republic next to minty-blue water and an endless stretch of golden sand, she fell madly in love. Over many years, she designed a home away from home there, an island retreat -- a clubhouse and a grouping of family homes and guesthouses -- suffused with light and air, full of indoor and outdoor rooms for relaxation. In her latest book, Island Whimsy, Kemble recounts the deeply personal and creative journey of designing Playa Grande and bringing this labor of love to life.

The chapters of this book are organized around the different ways Kemble sought to braid her family's story into the larger landscape of Playa Grande and to provide inspiration, joy, and respite to all who come. "Fantasy" looks at the way she used whimsical, dreamlike elements -- from the latticework cabanas by the pool to the lamb statues on the property who "mow" the lawns -- throughout the property to create a sense of play and possibility. "Light, Salt, Air" describes how she went about bringing the most precious elements of the beach into the homes themselves, creating a feeling of flow and permeability, and reminding visitors constantly of where they are. "In the Jungle" looks at the design cues she took from the flora and fauna of the tropical rainforest surrounding Playa Grande to create an alluring tension between chaos and refinement. "Sweet & Dark" examines the surprising color combinations that tango into life in the tropics -- whether in the form of tribal prints in hot Gauguin colors mixed with Jordan-almond pastels or handmade objects like a papier-mâché lobster mask that brings a shout of spirit to a room. Finally, "Texture" focuses on the powerful impact that thoughtfully layered materials -- from rough, local coquina stone and painted antique wicker to the smooth polished cotton of Dutch wax prints -- have on a space.

Throughout this lovingly crafted book, ideas abound for anyone decorating a sunny home or fantasizing about spending time in one. Kemble shares inspiration for creating a sense of openness to the sea, sand, and sky; offering places to wash sandy feet or perfect viewing spots for a sunset-saturated drink; and infusing spaces with invitation, welcome, and magic.

About the Author:

Celerie Kemble is a partner in Kemble Interiors, Inc., a decorating firm founded in 1982.
