Living in Paradise brims with the best of tropical residential designs. Architecture and interior design experts Annie Kelly and Tim Street-Porter have selected unique interiors that will inspire readers to create their own paradises.

The stunning venues in lush settings profiled here range in style from the environmentally sustainable utilizing indigenous materials, such as thatching and bamboo, to breezy courtyard spaces. These homes take into account the dramatic natural landscapes--some are surrounded by tropical plantings, while others open onto dramatic sun-drenched beaches. The interiors incorporate organic textures such as cane and bamboo furnishings, some covered in exotic Indonesian fabrics, including ikat- and batik-style textiles. Pool pavilions with decorative roof details are perfect for outdoor entertaining, and infinity pools are presented as a striking and organic part of the landscape.

Beautifully photographed, this will inspire readers with design ideas that can be gleaned from these breathtaking dwellings.

An important material for many centuries and used in countless diverse ways before being almost despised for a long time in the modern era, wood has now become a source of fascination and inspiration in contemporary architecture.

The sustainable and locally available building material is easy to process, structurally very powerful and extremely simple to combine with other materials. It insulates against heat as well as cold, but is also breathable – excellent qualities for a pleasant and healthy interior climate.

Along with these practical considerations, it is the unlimited abundance of creative possibilities that accounts for the ever-growing popularity of residential dwellings made of wood. From one-story bungalows to multi-story dwellings, timber houses are at the forefront of the development of contemporary architecture and design. This volume presents the huge creative diversity of individual solutions from across the globe.

The rural homes and lifestyles of modern creatives who have left city dwelling for working remotely and living simply and sustainably.

Living Upriver showcases the artisanal country way of life, inspiring readers to bring nature home, be true to oneself, and foster a warm, welcoming community. The book documents twelve homes belonging to the new pioneers: creative individuals who embrace a slower lifestyle combining nostalgic remote living with modern connectivity. The homes of these designers, artisans, and entrepreneurs are restored farms, barns, cabins, and churches featuring rustic textiles and handcrafted living spaces. These comfortable, characterful rooms welcome their communities by hosting picturesque events in the summer, and cozy dinners in the winter.

Including thoughtful tips and ideas — on reclaiming old spaces, upcycling used furniture, foraging and gardening sustainably, tabletop arranging, and more — from the homeowners, who brought their new spaces to life, this book shows how we can put more of ourselves into our environment and feel more at home in doing so.

Charlotte Perriand (24 October 1903 – 27 October 1999) was a French architect and designer. Her work aimed to create functional living spaces in the belief that better design helps in creating a better society. In her article “L’Art de Vivre” from 1981 she states, “The extension of the art of dwelling is the art of living ― living in harmony with man’s deepest drives and with his adopted or fabricated environment.” Charlotte liked to take her time in a space before starting the design process. Her approach to design includes taking in the site and appreciating it for what it is. Perriand connected with any site she was working with or just visiting she enjoyed the living things and would reminisce on a site that was presumed dead.

She is well known for the playful way in which she mixed and superposed materials and styles in most of the furniture she created during her career. Nonetheless, one of the most essential influence on her entire work has been the Japanese craftsmanship that kept on inspiring her.

__________

Living with Charlotte Perriand presents a catalogue of the great designer’s work, object by object. Her chairs, tables and bookshelves in all their different iterations are seen here both up close and "at home," as installed in the living spaces of collectors. Photographs of both historical and contemporary settings show how Perriand’s furniture stands the test of time and taste. Essays by François Laffanour and Cynthia Fleury provide a deeper insight into Perriand's work and retrace her life and collaboration with other great artists, designers and architects of her time, such as Le Corbusier and Jean Prouvé. Additionally, quotes from Perriand and the collectors who live with her designs are interspersed throughout the book.

Invite nature inside by decorating the home with an ever-changing seasonal array of interior design accents -- flowers, buds, fronds, seed heads, fruits, and other natural materials -- gathered and repurposed from the garden, farm stand, fields, woods, and nature trails.

Author Marie Masureel is an interior stylist and photographer whose passion is varying home decor with repurposed elements and found objects from nature, season by season. For autumn, she gathers fallen leaves, seasonal berries, and rose hips for flower arrangements and wreaths. To welcome spring, she turns to a garland made of newly formed fern fronds, while in summer, wildflowers, shells, driftwood, and other materials create an effortless bohemian beach look. Winter is embraced with the concept of hygge, using a neutral palette and candlelight for a feeling of coziness.

The book features illustrations that focus on only one house in order to demonstrate in practice how simple techniques and natural materials can create varied atmospheres throughout the year. Masureel shows the reader a more mindful way of living and decorating, revealing easy methods of styling the home following a less-is-more aesthetic to create an atmosphere that is warm, relaxing, and beautiful.

Marie Masureel has contributed to numerous home and lifestyle publications and has a regular column in Belgium's leading shelter magazine.

The stunning interiors and glorious gardens of New Orleans’s unrivaled jewel and architectural masterpiece. Longue Vue House and Gardens, accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and listed as a national historic landmark, was designed and built between 1934 and 1942 by landscape architect Ellen Biddle Shipman and architects Charles and William Platt for Edgar Bloom and Edith Rosenwald Stern, New Orleans’s foremost mid-twentieth-century philanthropists and civil-rights activists. The mansion and its surrounding eight acres of garden spaces, with varied designs ranging from the formal to the wild, draw upon Southern architectural traditions and native Louisiana flora, even as they echo the contemporaneous garden-design movement that set the stage for the creation of some of the most breathtaking garden estates in the country. Lush photography, supporting architectural drawings, and an informative text bring the main house and gardens to life and establish the estate as an enduring symbol to its creators’ contributions to building a just society.

Lorcan O'Herlihy, Greg Goldin

AIA Los Angeles Firm of the Year.

Each project is illustrated with photographs and drawings that convey the spirit of Kahn’s work, as well as the inspirations that led to the design and buildings featured include such architectural icons as Yale Art Gallery, Kimbell Art Museum, and the Salk Institute, along with Kahn’s work in India and Bangladesh. John Lobell

Monacelli Press

For everyone interested in the enduring appeal of Louis Kahn, this book demonstrates that a close look at how Kahn put his buildings together will reveal a deeply felt philosophy.

Louis I. Kahn is one of the most influential and poetic architects of the twentieth century, a figure whose appeal extends beyond the realm of specialists. In this book, noted Kahn expert John Lobell explores how Kahn's focus on structure, respect for materials, clarity of program, and reverence for details come together to manifest an overall philosophy. Kahn's work clearly conveys a kind of "transcendent rootedness" -- a rootedness in the fundamentals of architecture that also asks soaring questions about our experience of light and space, and even how we fit into the world. In Louis Kahn: The Philosophy of Architecture, John Lobell seeks to reveal how Kahn's buildings speak to grand humanistic concerns.

Through examinations of five of Kahn's great buildings -- the Richards Medical Research Building in Philadelphia; the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla; the Phillips Exeter Academy Library in New Hampshire; the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth; and the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven -- Lobell presents a clear but detailed look at how the way these buildings are put together presents Kahn's philosophy, including how Kahn wishes us to experience them. An architecture book that touches on topics that addresses the universal human interests of consciousness and creativity, Louis Kahn: The Philosophy of Architecture helps us understand our place and the nature of well-being in the built environment.

About the Author:

John Lobell is a researcher, instructor, and lecturer on the subjects of architecture, creativity, and consciousness. A professor of architecture at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, since 1980, he has lectured widely and is the author of numerous articles. He has studied and worked with major creative and cultural figures of the twentieth century, including mythologist Joseph Campbell; architects Louis Kahn and Robert Venturi; Buddhist masters Chogyam Trungpa, Robert Thurman, and the Dalai Lama; and Tai Chi master Cheng Man-Ch'ing.
His previous books include Between Silence and Light: Spirit in the Architecture of Louis I. Kahn (Shambhala, 1979/2008), which has sold 25,000 copies across two editions, Joseph Campbell: The Man and His Ideas (1993), and Visionary Creativity (2015).
