About the Author:

Roy Thomas has been a comic book writer and editor since 1965, primarily for Marvel Comics and DC Comics. Inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2011, he currently edits Alter Ego magazine and writes the online Tarzan strips and the occasional comic book. Thomas is also the author of two definitive histories for Taschen — 75 Years of Marvel Comics: From the Golden Age to the Silver Screen and The Stan Lee Story. He lives in rural South Carolina.

Laurent Durieux is a famous Belgian illustrator who is well-known by pop culture fans and collectors for his cult movie poster reinterpretations.

Every one of his American exhibitions was sold out on opening night and attended by thousands of enthusiastic fans. This book will be his first monograph and will cover his entire career, with particular focus on his most iconic alternative movie posters (including Jaws, The Birds, Vertigo, and The Master).

Laurent Durieux was born in 1970 in Belgium. He’s spent two decades as a designer and teacher, and then the 49-year-old Brussels illustrator and graphic artist became a star in the US thanks to a number of high-profile awards and marquee commissions, including a 2013 screenprint of Jaws, which caught the eye of the film’s director, Steven Spielberg. Durieux was named one of the world’s 200 Best Illustrators by the influential international advertising magazine Lu¨rzer’s Archive in 2011. Durieux’s posters can be found in several prestigious cinema related institutions such as the Oscar Museum in Hollywood and the Cinémathèque Française in Paris, France, as well as in many worldwide private collections.

L'imagination au pouvoir was a slogan devised by artist Pierre Aléchinsky during the May 1968 student riots in Paris. The particular appeal of political posters for avant-garde artists comes from their dual inspiration of utopian ideals and Jive history. The postwar period, when Picasso's unassuming dove image was commandeered by the Communist peace movement, was succeeded by the general willful resistance of the younger generation in the 1960s. In 1968, many supported the students' demands and produced political posters. In the 1970s, the focus turned to freedom for minorities, and this was followed not much later by environmental pollution a great concern of artists such as Joseph Beuys.
