Photographs by Massimo Listri, Text by Raniero Gnoli and Carlo Gasparri and Alvar González-Palacios
ID: 15516
Видавництво: Rizzoli

A journey through its emotional itineraries is unveiled for the very first time by the photographic masterpieces of Massimo Listri.

Villa Albani Torlonia, with its collections, the Italian garden, and the hemicycle of the Kaffeehaus, is a sublime testimony of that particular antiquarian taste which came to the fore in the mid-eighteenth century, that for which Rome became a favorite destination on the Grand Tour. The classicist dream of Cardinal Alessandro Albani (1692–1779), was preserved thanks to the Torlonia family, who purchased the villa in 1866, enlarging the collection and the gardens and restoring the most important cardinal residence of the eighteenth century.

More than 300 images by the great Italian master Massimo Listri recount the history of this extraordinary cultural heritage for the very first time. An immersive journey leads the reader between its collections of ancient masterpieces. Statues, bas-reliefs, and fountains are ensconced between the various buildings and gardens of the villa in a composition of environments, landscapes, and works of art forever waiting to be discovered.

Walking surveys the proliferation of pedestrian practices across contemporary art, taking an avowedly political stance on where and how the three practices of art, walking and writing intersect.

Across the world, walking remains a vital way to assert one’s presence in public space and discourse. Foregrounding work by Black artists, Indigenous artists and artists of colour, working-class artists, LGBTQI+ artists, disabled artists and neurodiverse artists, as well as many others, Walking maps the terrain of contemporary walking practices while examining the diverse voices and bodies of those who incorporate walking into their art. This anthology contends that, as a relational practice, walking inevitably touches upon questions of access, public space, land ownership and use; it is therefore always a political act. Walking offers a vital opportunity to draw attention to the work of those who are frequently denied the right to take their places in public space, not only in the street or the countryside but also in art discourse.

Artists included: Stanley Brouwn, Annalee Davis, Laura Grace Ford, Regina Jose Galindo, Emily Hesse, Tehching Hsieh, Steffani Jemison, Kongo Astronauts, Myriam Lefkowitz, Sharon Kivland, Andre Komatsu, Steve McQueen, Jade Montserrat, Sara Morawetz, Bruce Nauman, Paulo Nazareth, Camilla Nelson, Ingo Niermann, Carmen Papalia, Ingrid Pollard, Issa Samb, Moneta Sleet Jr, Mikey Smith, Sop, Iman Tajik, Tentative Collective, Amanda Thomson, Robert Walser, Anna Zvyagintseva.

Text by Walter Scott Murch, Robert Storr, Winslow Myers, Judy Collischan, Foreword by George Lucas
ID: 16250
Видавництво: Rizzoli

The first complete monograph of artist Walter Tandy Murch explores the life of an unsung yet remarkable artist whose paintings and illustrations of everyday objects and mechanical devices are familiar yet mysterious, or as George Lucas puts it, “in a magical middle.”

Walter Tandy Murch (1907–1967) is best known for his enigmatic, dreamlike still-life paintings of everyday objects and mechanical devices in a style that falls between Magic Realist, Surrealist, and Realist. This volume offers the most comprehensive collection of his work, including his striking commercial work for magazines and his paintings from the extensive collection of George Lucas.

Lucas calls himself a “fanboy” of Murch’s art — paintings and drawings he describes as simultaneously “functional and dreamy, simple and complicated; they are quiet yet grab your attention.” The tension of these opposing reactions draws viewers into Murch’s still lifes, which caught the attention of famed art dealer Betty Parsons, who also represented artists such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Ellsworth Kelly, and Agnes Martin. Murch showed his work at Parsons’s gallery for nearly thirty years.

With illuminating essays and extensive plates sections displaying Murch’s works, this celebration of an exceptionally talented and visionary artist is long overdue.

About the Author:

George Lucas is a film director, producer, screenwriter, and art collector. Walter Scott Murch is a writer and an Oscar-winning film editor and sound engineer. Robert Storr is a curator, critic, author, professor, and dean of the School of Art at Yale. Winslow Myers has taught art and art history for forty years, chairing the art department at the Bancroft School in Massachusetts. Judy Collischan is a curator, lecturer, writer, and professor of contemporary art.

Between Afrofuturism, fantasy and postcolonialism: the most comprehensive monograph to date on the fantastical worlds of Wangechi Mutu

Wangechi Mutu takes viewers on journeys of material, psychological and sociopolitical transformation; this volume explores her most recent groundbreaking work. Over the past two decades, Mutu has created chimerical constellations of powerful female characters, hybrid beings and fantastical landscapes. With a rare understanding of the need for powerful new mythologies beyond simple binaries and stereotypes, Mutu breaches common distinctions between human, animal, plant and machine. An artist who calls both Nairobi and New York City home, Mutu moves voraciously between cultural traditions to challenge colonialist, racist and sexist worldviews with her visionary projection of an alternate universe informed by Afrofuturism, posthumanism and feminism.

This dazzling book accompanies a presentation of Mutu’s new work on view at the Legion, along with a greater selection from her landmark oeuvre. It is the most comprehensive book on the artist to date.

A comprehensive survey of the work of the influential Kenyan-American artist Wangechi Mutu

Wangechi Mutu’s multidisciplinary practice grapples with contemporary realities while proffering new models for a radically changed future informed by feminism, Afrofuturism, and interspecies symbiosis. Ann Blockley
ID: 13649
Видавництво: Batsford

An inspirational and practical art manual, packed with step-by-step projects.

Artist Ann Blockley is renowned for her innovative approach to watercolour painting. Her highly anticipated new book provides a series of workshops demonstrating how to push the boundaries of watercolour, using key techniques to develop your own work and take your paintings to the next level.

Ann's easy-to-follow, step-by-step projects demonstrate how some of her most dramatic paintings are created. She describes in detail some of the key techniques used and how you can experiment with alternative methods to create your own interpretations. Finally, her beautiful and inspirational artworks demonstrate how different interpretations of a subject might take an unexpected or unusual direction, and how to make the most of these opportunities.

The book moves, with progressively challenging projects, from loose wildflower meadows, textured woodland and rustic rambling walls to atmospheric or semi-abstract landscape corners, all rendered in Ann’s adventurous signature style. Loose, expressive mark-making and unusual techniques include combining water-based paint and ink with granulation medium for dramatic texture, drawing with twigs, using gesso and collage to create unique effects; manipulating paint with materials such as plastic wrap (clingfilm); developing printed marks made using found materials.

Following the huge demand for more practical guidance in experimental painting, the book provides plenty of techniques and instruction. Ann’s personal commentary also gives a unique insight into the mind of the artist – ways of looking at your subject, how to explore and experiment – to unlock the potential of your watercolour painting.

About the Author:

Ann Blockley is a well-known watercolourist with an international reputation. She is a member of the RI (Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour) and the author of seven bestselling practical art books, including Experimental Flowers in Watercolour and Experimental Landscapes in Watercolour, both published by Batsford. Ann runs her own very popular watercolour courses, teaches at international workshops, has made three DVDs of her painting techniques and regularly writes for The Artist magazine. In remembrance of revered American artist Wayne Thiebaud who passed away in 2021 at the age of 101, the definitive monograph of Wayne Thiebaud’s work is now available in a reformatted, accessibly priced edition, including his last paintings.

This is the most comprehensive monograph to date on Wayne Thiebaud, with new works added, in a reformatted size. Spanning the length of his career from the 1950s to the present, the book has been made in close collaboration with the artist. Thiebaud selected the works himself, making the book an act of autobiography in a sense. At age 100, he looks back over his life and his work, rich with breakthroughs in painting and masterful individuality.

“Required reading for those who have a healthy appetite for provocative art.” — Bloomberg Business

“This comprehensive monograph of more than 200 illustrations can literally be considered eye candy. American artist Wayne Thiebaud is famed for his brightly colored canvases of cakes, diner pies, pastries, ice cream cones, candy and brightly colored gumball machines. . . . Whether still lifes or landscapes, Thiebaud’s paintings are akin to visual Prozac; you simply cannot be in a bad mood looking at them.” — Kansas City Magazine

“While Thiebaud is best known for his heavily pigmented still lifes of cakes, pies, and candies, [this] book shows his broader range, from vibrant landscapes depicting highways and farmland to portraits of solitary figures. . . The texts examine Thiebaud’s influences as well as his impact on the art world and the individual viewers of his work.” — Architectural Digest

John Berger
ID: 15286
Видавництво: Penguin Books

Based on the BBC television series, John Berger's Ways of Seeing is a unique look at the way we view art, published as part of the Penguin on Design series in Penguin Modern Classics.

'Seeing comes before words. The child looks and recognizes before it can speak.'

'But there is also another sense in which seeing comes before words. It is seeing which establishes our place in the surrounding world; we explain that world with words, but word can never undo the fact that we are surrounded by it. The relation between what we see and what we know is never settled.'

John Berger's Ways of Seeing is one of the most stimulating and influential books on art in any language. First published in 1972, it was based on the BBC television series about which the Sunday Times critic commented: 'This is an eye-opener in more ways than one: by concentrating on how we look at paintings . . . he will almost certainly change the way you look at pictures.' By now he has.

John Berger (b. 1926) is an art critic, painter and novelist.born in Hackney, London.
His novel G. (1972) won both the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and the Booker Prize.

If you enjoyed Ways of Seeing, you might like Susan Sontag's On Photography, also available in Penguin Modern Classics.

'Berger has the ability to cut right through the mystification of professional art critics ... he is a liberator of images: and once we have allowed the paintings to work on us directly, we are in a much better position to make a meaningful evaluation'
Peter Fuller, Arts Review

'The influence of the series and the book ... was enormous ... It opened up for general attention areas of cultural study that are now commonplace'
Geoff Dyer in Ways of Telling

'One of the most influential intellectuals of our time'
Observer

About the Author:

John Berger was born in London in 1926. His acclaimed works of both fiction and non-fiction include the seminal Ways of Seeing and the novel G., which won the Booker Prize in 1972. In 1962 he left Britain permanently, to live in a small village in the French Alps. He died in 2017.

FriendsWithYou, Contributions by Pharrell Williams and Alejandro Jodorowsky, Introduction by Peter Doroshenko
ID: 16042
Видавництво: Rizzoli

FriendsWithYou is a contemporary fine art collective that has been spreading their unifying message of Magic, Luck, and Friendship worldwide since their founding in 2002. Expanding their mission of connectivity and reawakening via their interactive artworks, the artists Samuel Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III call on the viewer to reinvent and reinterpret the lost meaning of spirituality. Using ideas like animism, healing arts, the modern ritual and celebrated symbols, FriendsWithYou addresses the human need to relate to one another. Together, the artists have constructed their own brand of post pop visual language a la Murakami, Arturo Herrera and Yayoi Kusama and have instilled in their work the powerful ability to trigger thoughts of happiness, curiosity, and meaningful interaction.

We Are FriendsWithYou is a brightly colored and comprehensive monograph that explores the journey of Sam & Tury, from their early handcrafted art objects to their recent works experimenting with animation, paintings, sculpture, public playgrounds, and published works. Originating at the crossroads of art, design, and popular culture, FriendsWithYou's output is quite unique. By presenting a “superflat” standpoint on their creations and allowing all types of influences –– film directors, writers, anime artists, as well as contemporary artists –– they are revolutionizing the art world and widening the straightforward definitions of these disciplines. With contributions by Pharrell Williams, Alejandro Jodorowsky, and Peter Doroshenko, this book reveals never-before-seen insight into the complete body of work from the art duo responsible for spreading the self-proclaimed “happy-virus.”

About the Author:

FriendsWithYou is a globally renowned fine art collective that originated in Miami and is currently based in Los Angeles. Pharrell Williams is a designer, recording artist, and producer based in Miami. Alejandro Jodorowsky is a playwright, filmmaker, composer, actor, mime, comic book writer, tarot reader, psychotherapist, and author. Peter Doroshenko is the Director of the Dallas Contemporary Museum and has contributed writing to several contemporary artist books.
