The Power and Purpose of Political Art

In an era of sensationalized news, artists around the world are observing politics and raising awareness on issues like authoritarian regimes, sustainability, climate change, diversity, and immigration.

Art’s ability to communicate, question, and influence opinions have made it a vital tool in activism. We are living in tumultuous times where democracies are challenged from all sides and there is a growing divide between left and right. Diverse topics are subjects that contemporary artists are covering to generate controversy, shine a light on government issues, and create empathy.

About the Authors:

Alain Bieber is the artistic director of the cultural institution NRW-Forum Düsseldorf. For the past two decades he has been organizing exhibitions with contemporary artists, especially in the fields of art and activism.

Francesca Gavin is contributing editor at Kaleidoscope, Twin, Good Trouble, Beauty Papers, and Financial Times, How to Spend It magazine. She cocurated “Manifesta11” and has curated exhibitions at Somerset House and Palais de Tokyo. She was co-editor of gestalten’s The Age of Collage 3, published in 2020.

Josh Kushins has worked steadily for various Hollywood studios most recently on the Publicity teams for Lucasfilm Ltd. and DC Comics, and is the Director of Special Projects at the American Film Institute. He is the author of The Art of John Carter: A Visual Journey (Disney, 2012).

Doug Chiang and Neil Lamont served as co-production designers for Rogue One.

BAFTA –nominated Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla [2014]) served as director.

In the turbulent global context following the fall of the Russian Empire and the October Revolution, Georgia declared its independence in 1918. Between then and the beginning of Soviet rule in 1921, an Avant-Garde creative scene burgeoned. Artists met, mainly in the many taverns and cafés in Kutaisi and the capital Tbilisi, to organise multidisciplinary events. Their frequent collaborations and interactions, which bore the imprint of Georgian tradition and Western and Eastern influences, took various forms: paintings, drawings, films, photos, performances and typographical experiments. Divergent movements such as Symbolism/Neo-Symbolism, Futurism, Dadaism, Zaum, Expressionism, Cubism and Cubo-Futurism existed side by side in unprecedented creative turbulence.

This book tells the unknown story of a vibrant Avant-Garde in the Caucasus, born in the taverns of Tbilisi – artistic laboratories where anything was possible, but where Soviet censorship lurked.

Extensively illustrated with works by Elene Akhvlediani, Gigo Gabashvili, Irakli Gamrekeli, Lado Gudiashvili, David Kakabadze, Petre Otskheli, Niko Pirosmanashvili, Ilia and Kirile Zdanevich, and many others.

The Cure “Stills” follows the changing faces of one of the leading British rock bands during the post-punk and new-wave movements of the late ’70s and ’80s. As the band has continued over a period of nearly 50 years, front man and only constant member Robert Smith has maintained the band’s popularity throughout the changing musical eras, while staying true to their individualistic style and quirkiness.

Instrumental in the creation of the varying incarnations of The Cure is photographer Paul Cox, who first encountered the group on Top of the Pops in 1980. Having established a creative, productive and trusting relationship with the band, Cox’s resulting work is The Cure in all their glory. Including over 200 colour and 75 black-and-white images, with accompanying captions selected and written by Cox and Smith, this book is a celebration of a seminal band through the lens of a skilled photographer. 

About the Author:

Paul’s career took off in the late 1970’s initially with a job with London Features International photographing bands at concerts and various locations. One of these was the BBC studios for Top of the Pops, where Paul first encountered The Cure in 1980.

About the Author:

Mina Gregori is an italian art historian, member of the 'Accademia dei Lincei', emeritus professor of Modern Art History at University of Florence. A disciple of Roberto Longhi. She graduated from Bologna University and she continued her university career in Florence, gaining a Master's. Among her studies, translated all over the world, are essays and monographs about Northern Italy paintings from the fifteenth century to the seventeenth century, including those by Caravaggio on whom she is considered a world-class expert. She has curated more than 100 exhibitions in Italy and around the world.

William F. Powell was an internationally recognized artist and one of America’s foremost colorists. A native of Huntington, West Virginia, Bill studied at the Art Student’s Career School in New York; Harrow Technical College in Harrow, England; and the Louvre Free School of Art in Paris, France. He was professionally involved in fine art, commercial art, and technical illustrations for more than 45 years. His experience as an art instructor included oil, watercolor, acrylic, colored pencil, and pastel — with subjects ranging from landscapes to portraits and wildlife. He also authored a number of art instruction books, including several popular Walter Foster titles. As a renowned master of color, Bill conducted numerous “Color Mixing and Theory” workshops in various cities throughout the U.S. His expertise in color theory also led him to author and illustrate several articles and an educational series of 11 articles entitled “Color in Perspective” for a national art magazine.
