Pete Nelson, the world’s best-known treehouse designer and builder, wants to put readers in trees — his motto is, “get ‘er done, so you can BE in a TREE.” His new book is a comprehensive source of inspiration and practical information about treehouse design and construction. To that end, he explains the basics of treehouse construction with his own recent projects as case studies.

Using photographs taken especially for this project along with diagrams, he covers the selection and care of trees and the design, style and construction of treehouses. To ignite the imagination, Nelson presents 27 treehouses in the United States, Europe, and Africa. The book will be indispensible to anyone who aspires to have a treehouse, from the armchair dreamer, to the amateur builder, to the professional contractor.

About the Author:

Pete Nelson’s previous books for Abrams include Treehouses of the World (2004) and New Treehouses of the World (2009). The host of the Animal Planet show Treehouse Masters, Nelson runs Nelson Treehouse and Supply (NTS) outside of Seattle. He lives in Fall City, Washington.

The only monograph to chronicle the life and work of one of the most important figures in American landscape architecture.

Beatrix Farrand, the only female founder of the American Society of Landscape Architects, is one of the most important landscape architects of the early twentieth century. Today the scope of her work and her influence on the profession are widely acknowledged, and her gardens are being studied, restored, and opened to the public. A long-awaited updated edition of the 2009 definitive monograph, Beatrix Farrand: Garden Artist, Landscape Architect chronicles the life and work of one of the most important figures in American landscape architecture.

Born into a prominent New York family (she was Edith Wharton’s niece), Farrand designed lavish gardens for the leaders of society, including the Harknesses, the Rockefellers, and the Blisses. Ultimately, her portfolio extended to college and university campuses, including Princeton, Yale, and the University of Chicago, and public gardens, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden and the Rose Garden at the New York Botanical Garden among them. Her best-known design is the landscape at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C., originally a private residence with extensive grounds and now a research center for Harvard University surrounded by a naturalistic park restored and maintained by the National Park Service. Deeply influenced by the English garden designer Gertrude Jekyll, Farrand was known for broad expanses of lawn with deep swaths of borders planted in a subtle palette of foliage and flowers. In her public work, she adapted this design strategy to create paths and plantings that define the character of the space and the hecirculation through it.

Heavily illustrated with archival images and photographs of her gardens at their peak—many taken especially for this book, Beatrix Farrand: Garden Artist, Landscape Architect also displays beautiful watercolour wash renderings of her designs, now preserved at College of Environmental Design of the University of California at Berkeley. The new edition includes updated images that reflect the current state of gardens including the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden at the New York Botanical Garden, the International House Courtyard at the University of Chicago, Garland Farm (Farrand’s last home and garden, which has recently been restored), Dumbarton Oaks, Dumbarton Oaks Park (which was not included in the first edition), among others.

The book concludes with a comprehensive list of Farrand’s commissions and the gardens open to the public, providing direction for further study and exploration. It also features a new preface outlining the milestones in research since the first edition’s publication, updated details about ownership and renovations of many properties, and a revised bibliography including articles and books published over the past ten years.

Published to coincide with the 150th anniversary of Farrand’s birth and written by landscape historian and preservation consultant Judith B. Tankard, Beatrix Farrand: Garden Artist, Landscape Architecttakes readers on a tour of Farrand’s finest works, celebrating her influence on succeeding generations of women landscape architects.

About the Author:

Judith B. Tankard is a landscape historian, preservation consultant, and the author or co-author of ten books on historic gardens and garden designers, most recently Gardens of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Other books include Ellen Shipman and the American Garden (winner of the J. B. Jackson Book Prize) and three works on Gertrude Jekyll. Tankard taught at the Landscape Institute of Harvard University for more than twenty years and served as a board member of the Beatrix Farrand Society. She is a frequent lecturer on landscape history and a contributor to the British journal Hortus.

Over the past fifteen years, Beijing has experienced unprecedented change - a change more dramatic and profound than ever before. Contemporary skyscrapers and architectural forms are gradually enclosing the historic city center. Steel and glass structures, constructions reminiscent of distant metropolises, highways, viaducts, and sports facilities have given Beijing a new face.

Speed, combined with ever-changing rules and regulations, are the main characteristics of contemporary Beijing’s transformation. Understanding this process means arranging intermediate and transitional phases into a logical sequence, in a historical and urban context of reference.

The speed at which the city is changing means that the work site phase and the actual moment of transformation have become an integral part of project elaboration, thereby influencing and modifying its development. This state of sudden and seemingly chaotic evolution is nonetheless supported by an urban structure dating back thousands of years and by a well-defined past. It is essential to understand this in order to identify the continuity in the midst of change, which in itself seems to be the real essence of the city’s evolution.

After more than one year of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, thousands of civilians have been killed, and thousands of buildings, heritage sites, and entire cities have been damaged. Along with millions of other Ukrainian women and children, architectural historian Ievgeniia Gubkina had to leave the country, moving further away from the Russian threat in search of safety. Her hometown Kharkiv still remains a target for the Russian army. The war has dramatically changed the geographies of nearly all Ukrainians and returned the work of an architectural critic to the traditional mainstream of journalism.

This shift has taken Gubkina’s thoughts from the academic context and made them more akin to war reporting. This book contains papers presented, printed, or published online by various media in different parts of the world during the first eight months of the all-out war. Most of the texts were written in late spring and summer 2022 after Ievgeniia and her teenage daughter had evacuated to Paris.

One of Germany’s most lauded landscape designers shares his own journey of discovery to show how anyone can create a timeless and sustainable garden for themselves.

In this visually exciting and highly personal book, acclaimed garden designer Peter Berg tells readers how a chance encounter with a scholar of the work of Count Hermann von Pückler- Muskau ― a famed nineteenth century landscape designer― provided him with the inspiration he needed to pursue his own stellar career.

First Berg introduces Pückler’s guiding principles and offers examples of how Pückler’s gardens have remained lasting monuments to aesthetic unity, composition, and adaptation to their natural surroundings. Then Berg leads a tour of ten of his own exquisite garden designs. Berg shows today’s gardeners how Pückler’s visionary principles can be applied to any situation ― from urban plots to country cottages. The book also highlights the cultural and ecological impact of these gardens, reinforcing the idea that timeless design principles can be a source of inspiration for creating environments that resonate with contemporary sensibilities.

At once a twenty-first century appreciation of Pückler’s genius, and a pictorial guide to holistic gardening, this book shows how any gardener can create a contemplative, environmentally sustainable, and harmonious space that will maintain its value for years to come.

About the Author:

Peter Berg is an award-winning garden designer whose company GartenLandschaft Berg & Co GmbH creates low-maintenance gardens with timeless aesthetics, including models of Japanese horticulture. The recipient of the ELCA Trend Prize, he is the author of Nature. Aesthetics. Design, published by Prestel.

Beyond the West inspires a fresh understanding of global contemporary architecture in Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

In the last decades Western architecture has largely dominated the discourse and the built environment worldwide. Recently architecture firms from non-Western countries have been establishing local and global recognition for themselves. Practices all over the world face challenges against a backdrop of rapidly growing cities, ecological demands, changing societies and climate, and emerging economies. Local architects often find strikingly different solutions to local requirements, including sustainability, transportation, migration, construction materials, and traditions.

In Mexico, architects work closely with indigenous communities to create modular social housing that can be assembled in one week. In Namibia, a lodge in a wildlife conservancy is designed to echo a local bird’s nest, while in Vietnam, a library and public space have created a micro-ecosystem to house fish and grow food.

Beyond the West journeys across Asia, Africa, and the Americas to understand how local architects respond to a changing world, and focuses its wide lens on inspiring and truly global architecture.
