Each year the pristine beaches, lush pine forests, and picturesque New England towns of Martha’s Vineyard draw tens of thousands of admirers to this beautiful island. Some of these visitors have become part-time residents, building contemporary homes alongside the traditional Victorian cottages, sea captains’ mansions, and colonial farmhouses that comprise the island’s cultural and architectural heritage. Rarely does one find such a concentration of outstanding contemporary design.

Authors Keith Moskow and Robert Linn expand their 2005 survey of Vineyard residential design to present twenty-five new houses that extend the traditional Vineyard vernacular of shingled houses and cottages. Each of the architects has described the goals for the project and the source of the design. Some reference nautical themes, others environmental concerns, and still others appropriateness of materials and scale. A significant number rely on a plan strategy based on a series of pavilions to minimize intrusion in the landscape while still taking advantage of views and prevailing breezes. What links the houses is that they are all built to stand the test of time in the sometimes extreme marine environment and they respectfully break with tradition.

About the Authors:

Keith Moskow and Robert Linn are principals of Moskow Linn Architects in Boston, a firm committed to sustainable, environmentally sensitive architecture. Moskow studied architecture at Dartmouth College and the University of Pennsylvania, and has been a lifelong summer resident of Martha’s Vineyard, where he and Linn have completed multiple architectural commissions. He is the author of The Houses of Martha’s VineyardSustainable Facilities, and Small Scale.

Country houses have always been the preferred locations for withdrawing, deceleration, and contemplation. This trend continues unbroken today, especially as the metropolitan areas expand and more and more city dwellers are escaping to the countryside. In addition to the conversion of existing buildings numerous new residences are being built. New building materials, groundbreaking techniques or a simple return to traditional forms of construction are defining country houses of today.

Masterpieces: Country House Architecture + Design presents projects from across the world which answers today’s aesthetic, functional and ecological demands, while at the same time underscoring the uniqueness of the location and the surrounding landscape. The selected works show different ways to re-evaluate the definition of the country with a contemporary design.

Philip Jodidio, Contributions by Paul McClean, Foreword by Niall McCollough and Valerie Mulvin
ID: 16373
Видавництво: Rizzoli

The first book on the architect's custom-built residences in California, tailor-made to the highest specification one could ask for.

This collection of visionary residences takes us on a tour of the height in luxury, designed to accommodate all amenities available--from the indoor gym and hair salon to the movie theater, champagne vault and wine cellar, cigar room, and wellness room. California Living looks at McClean's rise to prominence, from his first Bird Streets home in the Hollywood Hills to houses that drew attention from the likes of fashion designer Calvin Klein and the record-setting Bel Air home of Beyoncé and Jay Z. In addition to incorporating water in all of his designs, he makes extensive use of glass to eliminate the barrier between the indoors/outdoors. His sleek designs seamlessly integrate the outdoors taking advantage of the spectacular views and landscapes.

After an illustrated introduction, the portfolio section of twenty-four magnificent ultra-modern homes describes each house in detail with sketches and site plans, explaining the architect's work. McClean offers his reflections on these beautiful projects and the design strategies behind their creation, all completed in the past fifteen years. McClean Design has grown into one of the leading contemporary residential design firms in the fashionable areas of Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, with projects throughout the Western United States and beyond to Hawaii and British Columbia.

About the Authors:

Paul McClean grew up in Ireland, where he attended the Dublin Institute of Technology, graduating with honors in architecture in 1994. During this time, he traveled and worked for award-winning architectural practices in London, Dublin, and Sydney. McClean is a member of the American Institute of Architects and works primarily in California and Hawaii.

Drawing on examples of their own instantly recognizable Minimalist-inflected designs, often evoking the work of Donald Judd, celebrated architects Messana O’Rorke demonstrate how to create a serene haven for modern living.

Founded in 1996 by Brian Messana and Toby O’Rorke in New York City, Messana O’Rorke is renowned for crafting spaces of sublime restraint and ethereal beauty. Their process utilizes a rigorously limited palette of materials orchestrated in an architectural language of distilled boxes, blocks, and containers that emphasize the qualities of space itself rather than the things that fill it. The apparent simplicity and serenity of Messana O’Rorke’s designs belie the astonishing richness and variety of the experiences they nurture.

The architects’ projects span a wide spectrum of residential and commercial assignments in multiple geographies — city, country, mountain, desert, coastal. Yet even as they adapt their fundamental design vocabulary to address differences in program and context, Messana O’Rorke’s signature remains unmistakable in the ways they carve space and light. Their designs simultaneously foster both contemplation and invigoration, repose and action. There is no straining for theatrical effect, no tortured architectural calisthenics, simply a search for order, clarity, and beauty.

An American expat searches vibrant cities and quiet pueblos for the essence of Mexican style

Revealing the richly visual and cultural details that are the essence of Mexican style, design editor and photographer Newell Turner has done for Mexican design what legendary culinary pioneer Diana Kennedy did for Mexican food.

Elegantly organized around nine decisive decorative periods that have shaped México’s unique design journey to the present day, Turner establishes a visual dialogue with the reader that beautifully captures the depth and subtleties of the country’s aesthetic legacy. Ushered behind the walls, gates, and doors of private México, we are introduced to an intriguing world of interior design and architecture — including the highly developed civilizations pre-dating the arrival of Columbus; the Spanish colonial arts; the dynamic response to global movements such as Art Deco and Surrealism; and a rich survey of modernist and contemporary work. Woven intricately into this history is Turner’s own story of discovering the distinctive soul of México, where — in the spirit of memoirs in which a traveler discovers another country he finds himself along the way.

In this vivid volume of color, texture and contrasts, Turner examines the extraordinary range of Mexican design with the insight of a true devotee. The breathtaking photography shows how every room, courtyard, loggia — and even a chair, or an arrangement of flowers — are part of a rich design heritage. Turner spent his magazine career chronicling American style, and now his unerring eye has turned to México. We are invited to join him on a voyage as he explores the homes of Mexicans and other expats who share his passion for authentic México — both past and present — and are inspired by the country’s complex history and stunning landscapes.

The first monograph of the stunning residences designed by a contemporary master of traditional architecture.

A must-have for lovers of traditional or southwestern-inspired residential design, Michael G. Imber: Ranches, Villas, and Houses reveals the beauty of building from the rich architectural traditions of the desert southwest and Mexico.

A master of traditional forms derived from these regions, particularly of his native Texas, Michael G. Imber begins each of his designs by considering the land through watercolors and then develops his ideas in relation to climate and local historical references. The result is an array of ranches and houses that evokes the rural building traditions of the west, that is unafraid of the delights of classical ornamentation, and that is nonetheless wholly modern in its execution.

Here, in the first monograph devoted to the architect’s work, is a collection of masterful residential projects ranging in scale from bungalows to sprawling ranches, all presented in large-format photographs and accompanied by Imber’s extraordinary watercolor studies.

About the Author:

Dev Desai founded DDAA (Dev Desai Architects and Associates) in 2020, an offshoot from a firm that specialises in residential villas and interiors. His formative development as an architect was under the guidance of Pritzker Laureate Toyo Ito and associates (Japan) and Vo Trong Nghia Architects (Vietnam). Both continue to have a strong influence on his work. As a young and dynamic studio, DDAA constantly challenges the threshold of architectural design through a contemporary unique language. One of the initial projects under DDAA was the design development of a tiny cabin on a coffee estate, as an alternative way of living during the pandemic. To minimise the ecological impact, the cabin was prefabricated and assembled within 4 weeks on-site. What started as a humble architectural project has now evolved into a series of prefabricated cabin designs and an eco-resort where 15 of such cabins will be built on the estate. Desai also founded Re-Build, a research venture that addresses the challenges in conventional prefab, and merges the power of digital fabrication to amortise the cost of construction, reduce the dependence on manual labour, eliminate the need for heavy machinery, and reduce the time for assembly to a few days. The connection with nature and the desire to push the boundaries of architecture and construction are the guiding principles behind his work.

Warm, inviting, embracing the indoor-outdoor lifestyle with a touch of the exotic, tropical modern homes are a dream of paradise realized.

Contemporary tropical residential architecture has risen from a geographically specific homegrown aesthetic to a source of inspiration for the world’s great modern architects and designers. Set in exotic locales, with pools, lush foliage, colorful gardens, these homes define a way of life. Frequently elegant and uncluttered, the houses serve as models of smart and beautiful design with lots of ideas for homeowners who do not necessarily live in a tropical or subtropical climate, but who wish to have something of that appeal and sensitivity in their own home.

This book presents some of the most innovative interpretations of the genre from the past five years by internationally recognized architects and interior decorators, such as Tadao Ando, as well the work of young up-and-comers of great talent, including German-born, Bali-based Alexis Dornier, and Mexico’s Roof Arquitectos. Selected residences span the globe, from the southern United States, the Caribbean, and tropical regions of Latin America, to Southeast Asia, northern Australasia, and Africa. Modern Tropical explores the exotic material, color, cultural, environmental, and aesthetic choices of some of contemporary architecture’s most beautiful residential properties. Each house is introduced with breathtaking interior and exterior photography and orientation plans, giving readers an in-depth glimpse of the rapidly evolving symbiosis between nature and shelter, indoor and outdoor, and rustic and polished, in a definitive examination of tropical modern living.

The New Old House presents 18 private historic homes, from North America to Europe, and traces the ingenious ways architects have revitalized and refreshed them for a new generation

Most of the renovations occurred in the last decade, but all of the homes have origins reaching back into the past, in some cases hundreds of years. Projects and firms featured include Greenwich House, Allan Greenberg; Longbranch, Jim Olson; Astley Castle, Witherford Watson Mann; Hunsett Mill, Acme; Cotswolds House, Richard Found; plus more than a dozen others. These projects address such timely factors as sustainability, multiculturalism, preservation, and style, and demonstrate the unique beauty and elegance that comes from the interweaving of modernity and history.

New Town House brings together a collection of some of the more interesting and creative town house projects which have been recently constructed. The focus on recently completed projects allows for an analysis of the challenges of integrating new buildings in existing residential areas.

All of the featured projects share one main characteristic their ability to make the most out of limited spaces in creative ways. Within the basic typology of a flat building between parallel walls, a world of possibilities is opened up: spaces full of light, endless staircases, curtain walls, facades which spread completely out to the street or enclose mysterious gardens and interior patios.

Heide Hendricks, Rafe Churchill, Laura Chávez Silverman, Asad Syrkett, Chris Motallini
ID: 17207
Видавництво: Rizzoli

The glorious Connecticut property of Heide Hendricks and Rafe Churchill (of the architecture and interior design firm Hendricks Churchill) illustrates how a late nineteenth-century farmhouse can be adapted for stylish and comfortable twenty-first-century living.

Rafe and Heide discovered their true home in a late 1800s New England farmhouse after a decade of living in Brooklyn, New York. The historic property, Ellsworth, is a showplace for their shared aesthetic and sensibility of designing for real life, and not for formality. At the core is a house of pared-down traditionalism with references to Shaker tranquility, Arts & Crafts practicality, and bohemian chic. Whimsical wallcoverings, striking colors, a mix of contemporary furniture and antiques, exciting works of art, and comfort abound—turning a workaday house from the nineteenth century into a creative laboratory of the twenty-first.

The house and its surroundings — a constant work in progress with evolving interiors, landscaping objectives, a reconfigured sunroom, a barn restoration, and planned hiking trails — have become an endless source of inspiration for the couple’s many projects, which include residences in New England, New York’s Hudson Valley, New York City, Oyster Bay, Boulder, and Austin. The narrative of the book addresses the couple’s design process in terms of architecture, decoration, and final installation. As many Americans are deciding to leave cities for calmer, more connected lives in the country, Heide and Rafe illustrate how this transition can be one of beauty and logic.

About the Author:

Rafe Churchill and Heide Hendricks are the husband-and-wife team behind Hendricks Churchill, an architectural and interior design firm that respects historic accuracy and modern relevance. Laura Chávez Silverman is a creative director and writer. Asad Syrkett is editor-in-chief of Elle Decor. Chris Mottalini is a photographer of architecture, interiors, and design.

Jane S. Day, Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach
ID: 17223
Видавництво: Rizzoli

Palm Beach style is the expression of elegance and romance everywhere evident in this paradise and epitomized in the lives and work of architect John Volk and artist-preservationist Jane Volk.

Together they conjured up much of the magic that now makes the place. The book explores this unique chemistry and the dazzling homes that are the result.

John Volk was one of the “big five” architects of Palm Beach. It was here, during his sixty years of practice, that he was commissioned to design over 2,000 projects, among them the Royal Poinciana Plaza as well as additions and renovations to the Everglades Club. This book is about the Volks, and the part they played in conjuring the spell with which Palm Beach continues to enchant.

Palm Beach, among other things, is its architecture. Red tile roofs and cast stone columns hint of the Mediterranean. Evidence of inspirations from Spain and Morocco abound. After the economic collapse of 1929, the classical architectural orders began to appear on columns and porticos. The Bermuda style and Modernism made an appearance later. Yet there is no one style exclusively associated Volk; here he perfected many styles and his architectural legacy can be found on almost every street.

While this book honors John Volk’s architecture and his enormous impact, it also celebrates Jane Volk’s contribution to Palm Beach and her devotion to protecting the town and its historic character.

About the Authors:

Jane S. Day is an historian and preservationist and author of Rizzoli’s From Palm Beach to Shangri La: The Architecture of Marion Sims Wyeth.
The Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach is a private, nonprofit membership organization dedicated to the preservation of the architectural and cultural heritage of Palm Beach, Florida.
