Haring as activist and egalitarian: a fresh, accessible and dynamic look at one of New York’s most exhilarating artists.

Lavishly illustrated with essays and reflections by cultural leaders, Keith Haring: Art Is for Everybody surveys Haring’s dynamic art practice from 1978 to 1990, shining a bright light on the iconic and beloved artist known for his fluid, uniform lines, intricate compositions and repeating imagery such as the barking dog and radiant baby. Forty years after he came to prominence, Haring’s art continues to garner worldwide recognition, breaking down barriers and spreading joy, while taking on complex issues that remain crucial today, from environmentalism, capitalism and the proliferation of new technologies to religion, sexuality and race.

Titled after a quote from Haring’s journals, Art Is for Everybody centers on the artist’s activism, the emphasis he placed on community and his egalitarian approach to art and life. The volume is organized chronologically and thematically, emphasizing Haring’s work made with publics in mind such as the subway drawings and murals, his collaborative practice and his unflinching belief that art is essential in making a better world.

Keith Haring was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1958 and arrived in New York from Pittsburgh in 1978, befriending artists including Kenny Scharf and Jean-Michel Basquiat. During the 1980s, Haring achieved international recognition and participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions. After contracting HIV in 1988, he focused his activism on the AIDS crisis. Less than two years later, Haring died of an AIDS-related illness.

Видавництво: Thames & Hudson

Make Your Mark introduces the work of 45 artists who are extraordinarily diverse but united by one basic principle: their art is completely fresh, original and the epitome of creativity.

They adopt a wide range of practices, including not only street art and new interpretations of the form but also studio-based work that has an ‘urban’ edge. The names – 44flavours from Germany, Bault from France, Morcky from Italy, Ricardo Cavolo from Spain, Zio Ziegler from the USA, Fuco Ueda from Japan, Raymond Lemstra from the Netherlands, João Ruas from Brazil and many others – all show exceptional talent, distinctiveness and courage in their approach to their work.

Divided into three thematic chapters – ‘Draw’, ‘Paint’ and ‘Make’ – this book focuses not only on the handmade and the hand-drawn but also the unusual techniques and unconventional approaches to the media used. The work is experimental and multifaceted – involving painting, illustration, sculpture, installation, mural art, tattoo art, cartoons, animation, textile art, and sometimes all of these things in one go – and many of the artists could be equally at home in any one of these categories.

Make Your Mark is an inspirational guide for practitioners, students and fans as well as anyone in commercial branding and communications not frightened by integrity

Tristan Manco who has spotted the greatest talents in urban art in a string of bestselling publications brings us another mould-breaking worldwide selection.

Shepard Fairey
ID: 12700
Видавництво: Rizzoli

The seminal artist’s recent art and poster works, and his triumphant return to his street-art roots with murals, all in work never before published. Shepard Fairey rose out of the skateboarding scene, creating his “Andre the Giant Has a Posse” sticker campaign in the late ’80s, and has since achieved a mainstream recognition that most street artists never find. Fairey’s “Hope” poster, created during Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, is arguably the most iconic American image since Uncle Sam. Fairey has become a pop-culture icon himself, though he has remained true to his street-art roots.

OBEY: Covert to Overt showcases his most recent evolution from works on paper to grander art installations, cross-cultural artworks, and music/art collaborations. The book also includes his ubiquitous streetwear and chronicles his return to public artworks. His signature blend of politics, street culture, and art makes Fairey unlike any other subculture/street artist working today.

This book showcases the significant amount of art he has created the last several years: street murals, mixed-media installations, art/music events, countless silk screens, and work from his extremely successful OBEY brand.

About the Author:

Shepard Fairey is an American contemporary street artist, graphic designer, activist, and illustrator who emerged from the skateboarding scene. He earned a bachelor of fine arts in illustration from Rhode Island School of Design in 1992. He is best known for his Barack Obama “Hope” poster, which he created in support of the 2008 presidential campaign. His work has been included in the collections of several museums, including the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Enter the world of OSGEMEOS, the Brazilian twins driving international graffiti culture.

Contemporary art is sometimes considered an austere matter: ascetic in palette, serious in tone, a subject for sober contemplation. That stereotype is exploded — ecstatically, and in full color — by the work of OSGEMEOS, trailblazing twin Brazilian artists with a practice as firmly rooted in the rule-breaking world of urban graffiti as it is in the elevated spheres of museum and gallery. Gustavo and Otavio Pandolfo first wielded their spray cans (and spun their discs, and breakdanced with friends) in the São Paulo hip-hop scene of the 1980s and ’90s, drawing from that vibrant milieu the lesson that art is at its best, and most meaningful, when everyone is invited to the party.

Combining historical and contemporary elements of Brazilian society with graffiti, hip-hop, and youth culture, OSGEMEOS: Endless Story extends an invitation into the artists’ expansive body of work, which embraces murals, paintings, sculpture, installations, and video, all using a symbolic visual language often inspired by dreams.

Renowned for their spindly yellow characters — seen dancing, writing graffiti, interacting with their urban settings, and stretching high across buildings and train cars worldwide —OSGEMEOS creates works that invite readers into a surreal, chimerical world filled with motifs that signal access to another realm or the deep psyche. This fantasy world, which they call Tritrez, is the apex of their vision: a land of wonder that reflects the diverse nature of Brazil itself.

OSGEMEOS: Endless Story, the artists’ first major English-language monograph, will be accompanied by their first US survey exhibition and their largest US show to date, on view at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC, from May 2024 to July 2025. The book is given a third dimension through Hirshhorn Eye (Hi) technology: readers can activate, via smartphone, videos of the artists and the exhibition’s curators discussing the works in both book and show.

About the Authors:

Marina Isgro is associate curator, media and performance art, and Melissa Chiu is director of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC.

Marguerite Itamar Harrison is an expert on Brazilian art at Smith College.

Alan Ket is cofounder and curator of the Museum of Graffiti and Wynwood Gallery, Miami, Florida.

Peter Michalski is an expert in uncommissioned public works on walls and trains.

Jochen Volz is the director of the Pinacoteca de São Paulo, Brazil.

The first definitive career retrospective of the visionary underground godfather of street art at the center of New York’s 1980s urban art scene.

Richard Hambleton (1954–2017) was a Canadian artist known for his pioneering street art. He was a surviving member of a group that emerged from the New York City art scene during the booming art market of the 1980s, which also included his close friends Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

As a conceptual artist, Hambleton’s early work installations titled “Image Mass Murder” from 1976–1979 were secretly placed onto streets in over 15 cities, depicting chalk-body outlines and blood-splattered crime scenes of what appeared to be “victims.” This theme of a prevailing violence, fear, and morbid curiosity elicited surprise and anxiety from its unsuspecting viewers. In the early 1980s, Hambleton created his most iconic “Shadow Man” works — artfully splattered ominous shadowy figures on unexpected street corners, walls, and alleys that startled viewers into a visceral awareness that the city was still a dangerous place.

This book features over 200 images including his early “Shadow Man” canvas paintings, as well as photographs of his in situ street work, a selection of his “Marlboro” rodeo horse silhouettes, and his “Beautiful Paintings” series of landscapes and seascapes, alongside other works on paper; behind-the-scenes studio shots; personal, unseen photographs of the artist; and inspirational imagery. Hambleton was renowned for influencing artists such as Banksy, Blek le Rat, and Shepard Fairey. This arresting, one-of-a-kind book will appeal to those interested in visual arts, street art, graffiti, and art history.

About the Author:

Vladimir Restoin Roitfeld is a French-American businessman and president of CR Fashion Book Ltd. media company. Andy Valmorbida is an Australian-born art entrepreneur, collector, and president of Untitled-1 Holdings.

Tyrone Wright (Rone)
ID: 14270
Видавництво: Thames & Hudson

The first-ever book documenting the work of Australian street-art superstar Rone

Known for his multi-storey murals gracing buildings all over the world, Melbourne-based artist Rone uses his work to explore the friction and connection between beauty and decay, youth and ruin. Rone was a seminal figure in the explosive Melbourne street art scene of the early 2000s. With his beginnings in street art, stencil and screen printing, Rone is now best known for haunting images of women's faces, rendered in arresting detail on silos and store fronts, museums and apartment blocks. The immersive installations Empty (2016), The Omega Project (2017) and Empire (2019) have continued Rone's investigation into divergent themes of beauty and ruin, materiality and loss, through the transformation of condemned, derelict or forgotten spaces - with each artwork painstakingly produced, only to be destroyed.

Rone: Street Art and Beyond presents a survey of the artist's work from the street, the studio, and the now-defunct installations. The works are bookended by essays that trace the evolution of Rone's career over the last two decades, delve into his depictions of women, and go behind the scenes of his most ambitious installation to date. Anecdotal notes from the artist unpack the stories behind the portraits, tying them to their communities in London, Paris, New York, Havana, Christchurch, Hong Kong and beyond.

Contents List:

FOREWORD • Jeremy McLeod • INTRODUCTION • Mo Wyse • RONE: UNSTOPPABLE • David Hurlston • WALLS • STUDIO • PROJECTS • LETTING GO • Lily Sullivan • JANE DOE

About the Author:

Tyrone Wright (Rone) lives and creates in Collingwood, Victoria, Australia. His distinctive portraits can be seen in various states of decay in cities like London, Paris, New York, San Francisco, Havana, Christchurch, Detroit and Hong Kong. The first appearances of graffiti “tags” (signatures) on New York City subway trains in the early 1970s were discarded as incidents of vandalism or the rough, violent cries of the ignorant and impoverished.
However, as the graffiti movement progressed and tags became more elaborate and ubiquitous, genuine artists emerged whose unique creativity and unconventional media captured the attention of the world.
Featuring gallery and street works by several contributors to the graffiti scene, this book offers insight into the lives of urban artists, describes their relationship with the bourgeois art world, and discusses their artistic motivation with unprecedented sensitivity.

Margo Thompson received her Ph.D. in art history from Northwestern University. She teaches modern and contemporary art at Muhlenberg College.

Her courses in African-American art history and multiculturalism led her to write this book. Her previous research on gender and sexuality in art has been published in journals including n.paradoxa, Genders and GLQ.
