This beautiful book was born out of the passion and artistic insight of Marnix Neerman and Hugo Martens. One hundred and twenty-eight masks have been photographed in such a unique style that their artistic nature is revealed to the utmost. Each mask has been shot from the front and from the rear, and detail shots reveal each mask as an almost autonomous work of art. And yet, these masks are not considered works of art in their countries of origin, but rather tools that have a function and a meaning in socio-religious life.

Many of these masks have never been displayed or published before and come from reference collections such as the Museum for Middle Africa in Tervuren, Belgium; the Etnographic Museum in Antwerp and private collections in Belgium, France, UK and USA.

African Faces was produced in cooperation with the archive of the Yale university, Tribal Art magazine, Parcours des Mondes in Paris and many other experts and will become a future reference work when it comes to the African mask; the powerful photographs accentuate the artistic value of the masks like never before

Alberto Giacometti forged a singular path within European Modernism, restlessly seeking a new language for sculpture as a double of reality. Presenting some 100 sculptures and paintings, the publication tracks the evolution of Giacometti’s work from Post-Cubism through Surrealism to post-war Realism.

Throughout his life, Alberto Giacometti (1901–1966) was in conversation with some of the most influential intellectuals of the twentieth century. By highlighting three writers – Georges Bataille, Jean Genet, and Samuel Beckett, with whom the artist sustained lasting friendships – the publication examines how these dialogues may be traced in Giacometti’s oeuvre.

The lavishly illustrated book not only provides an overview extending from his early to his later works, and newly commissioned essays but also presents important historical texts by the three authors and the artist himself.

This important book, now available in a revised edition, contains the most complete range of art deco figures ever published. It is based partly on the original importers' catalogues and partly on the wide range of pieces handled by the author Bryan Catley - the leading specialist in the subject.

Between the wars an entirely modern style of decorative sculpture emerged which was a complete break with the heavy romantic late nineteenth century schools, and was totally in sympathy with the vibrant young society of the 1920s.

The use of bronze and ivory for a great number of these sensual figures in no way obscures the fact that many are of exceptionally high quality; add to this their sense of movement and rhythm and one realises that the large sums they now command is a reflection of a discriminative international collectors market.

Bryan Catley's original interest in the subject was fired when he inherited an art deco figure from his late grandmother's art collection. During his student days at engineering college and after he was inspired to go on and buy every figure he could afford. Later he and John Sparrow set up the business known as 'Catspa' which, for many years before their retirement, was synonymous with Art Deco sculpture.

Bernini: Art as Theatre forges a new analysis of Baroque illusionism through a study of this artist’s sculptural ensembles.

Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598–1680) was a sculptor, architect and painter, but also a court scenographer, playwright, actor and director. Bernini’s work in theatre served as a wellspring for his art’s visual effects. Theatre was the dominant cultural paradigm of the Baroque, manifest in the rise of opera and ballet, as well as increasingly magnificent scenographic technologies for the performed rituals of church and court. Bernini drew on a lexicon of theatrical effects, deploying light, movement and a fusion of fictive and physical space to render new forms of artistic illusion in both his sculptural mise-en-scènes and his stage sets. The force of his art’s illusionistic powers lay in a fiction of materials effected through medial exchanges between sculpture, painting and architecture.

This book opens up provocative new frameworks for the analysis of Baroque illusionism extending beyond Bernini to a reconsideration of seventeenth-century visual culture as a whole.

A complete guide to achieving a fantastic spectrum of colourful glazes for the studio potter, Colour in Glazes looks at all the methods of acheiving colour in glazes, focusing on colouring oxides in detail, including the newly available rare earth oxides. Types of base glazes and the fluxes used to make them are discussed in relation to colour response. Emphasis is placed on using colouring oxides to achieve depth and variety of colour, rather than just resorting to commercial ceramic stains. The practical aspects of mixing, applying, testing and adjusting glazes are explained. and a large section of test tiles and glaze recipes is included, for use on white earthenware, stoneware and porcelain fired in electric, gas and salt kilns. In the early 1990s Andy Goldsworthy was invited to propose a project for Cumbria, a region of outstanding natural beauty where the landscape has been moulded for centuries by agriculture and in particular by sheep-farming. His response was to repair or rebuild a swathe of Cumbrian sheepfolds – with the intention that, wherever possible the folds would still be accessible to sheep.

Among the sculptures are slate works and balanced stones embedded in walls and a series of sixteen folds each containing a massive boulder rolled down from the nearby hillside. By 2006 over forty structures had been completed: it is this extraordinary project that forms the core of Enclosure.

This impressive volume is testament to Goldsworthy's lifelong interest in the land, its history and its inhabitants.

Andy Goldsworthy, the internationally renowned sculptor, was born in Cheshire in 1956. There are regular exhibitions of his work in Britain, France, The United States and elsewhere. Although he travels all over the world to carry out his commissions, the landscape around his home in south-west Scotland, remains at the heart of his work.

Ferdinand Preiss (1882-1943) was the most prolific sculptor of the Art Deco period in Germany; he combined ivory, bronze, onyx and marble to create the most dazzling sculptures of his day.

Preiss entered into an apprenticeship with his uncle, a master ivory carver, at the age of sixteen, following the death of his parents. He went on to become the most important Art Deco sculptor in Germany and, indeed one of the most accomplished in the whole of Europe, during the Nazi period.

This book, the only work devoted entirely to this subject, follows the development of ivory carving in Erbach, Germany, focusing on the life and work of one of the country's most talented and prodigious sons. The political climate which Preiss and other artists were forced to endure during this time, its difficulties, constraints and influences on their work, is also explored. Extensive research into Nazi archives, interviews with family members, recently unearthed documents and the most comprehensive collection of sumptuous colour illustrations, truly enable the extraordinary talents of this formidable artist to shine.

A celebration of the enormously popular Italian painter, sculptor and interior decorator

Piero Fornasetti established an enduring reputation as a designer with a style that was all his own – a style based on illusionism, architectural perspectives and a host of personal leitmotifs, such as the sun, playing cards and fishes, from which he spun seemingly endless variations. 'He makes objects speak' said Gio Ponti, his friend and longtime collaborator.

Designers and collectors today celebrate his use of allusion, unsettling images and striking juxtaposition to create unique, whimsical objects. Fornasetti's masterpieces shock, delight and inspire.
