About the Authors:

Salvatore Settis is the former director of the Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles (1994-99) and of the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa (1999-2010), where he also taught classical archaeology and art history. He currently chairs the Scientific Council of the Musée du Louvre and has curated or co-curated a number of exhibitions.

Carlo Gasparri taught archeology and history of Greek and Roman art in the universities of Urbino (1975-90), Viterbo (1990-93) and Naples (1993-2014). He is emeritus professor of the University of Naples Federico II and has authored several books about archeology and Greek and Roman art.

About the Author:

Born in 1954, Thomas Bastide grew up watching Scandinavian master glassmakers at work, and glass—with the multiple creative possibilities it offers—has become a true passion for him. A graduate from the Penninghen School of Graphic Arts and ENSAAMA in Paris, and the Pilchuck School in Seattle, he began his professional career with Raymond Loewy, a star of the design world. Laure Verchère was a long-time journalist for Elle Décoration. She is the author of numerous books, including Signed Sybille de Margerie and Le Grand Hôtel & Café de la Paix, published by Flammarion.

This beautiful book was born out of the passion and artistic insight of Marnix Neerman and Hugo Martens. One hundred and twenty-eight masks have been photographed in such a unique style that their artistic nature is revealed to the utmost. Each mask has been shot from the front and from the rear, and detail shots reveal each mask as an almost autonomous work of art. And yet, these masks are not considered works of art in their countries of origin, but rather tools that have a function and a meaning in socio-religious life.

Many of these masks have never been displayed or published before and come from reference collections such as the Museum for Middle Africa in Tervuren, Belgium; the Etnographic Museum in Antwerp and private collections in Belgium, France, UK and USA.

Bernini: Art as Theatre forges a new analysis of Baroque illusionism through a study of this artist’s sculptural ensembles.

Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598–1680) was a sculptor, architect and painter, but also a court scenographer, playwright, actor and director. Bernini’s work in theatre served as a wellspring for his art’s visual effects. Theatre was the dominant cultural paradigm of the Baroque, manifest in the rise of opera and ballet, as well as increasingly magnificent scenographic technologies for the performed rituals of church and court. Bernini drew on a lexicon of theatrical effects, deploying light, movement and a fusion of fictive and physical space to render new forms of artistic illusion in both his sculptural mise-en-scènes and his stage sets. The force of his art’s illusionistic powers lay in a fiction of materials effected through medial exchanges between sculpture, painting and architecture.

This book opens up provocative new frameworks for the analysis of Baroque illusionism extending beyond Bernini to a reconsideration of seventeenth-century visual culture as a whole.
